🧑

Steve

Default Player

The iconic default player character of Minecraft. Blocky, blue-shirted, and capable of punching trees with his bare hands. Steve represents every player's blank-slate avatar — able to build, mine, craft, and survive anything the world throws at him.

👩

Alex

Default Player (Female)

The second default player skin introduced in 2014. Alex has bright orange hair and a thinner build than Steve. Represents the game's diversity of player expression and has become equally iconic as the co-face of Minecraft alongside Steve.

💥

Creeper

Hostile Mob

The most iconic Minecraft mob — a silent, green, exploding creature that hisses before detonating. Created by accident when Notch misflipped a pig's dimensions. The Creeper became the symbol of Minecraft and one of gaming's most recognizable characters ever.

👁

Enderman

Hostile Mob

Tall, dark, silent creatures from The End who teleport and become hostile when looked at directly. Inspired by the Slender Man myth. Their haunting screech and eye-contact mechanic create unique tension. They carry blocks and are drawn to Eyes of Ender.

🏹

Skeleton

Undead Archer

Undead archers that spawn at night and in dark areas. Their accurate bows and infinite arrow supply make them one of Minecraft's most dangerous early-game threats. Burn in daylight and can be equipped with armor. Stray variant appears in snowy biomes.

🧟

Zombie

Undead Mob

Classic undead mobs that burn in daylight and hunt players at night. Can turn villagers into Zombie Villagers and call reinforcements when attacked. Come in many variants: Baby Zombies, Husks, Drowned. Drops rotten flesh and occasionally rare items.

🐉

Ender Dragon

Final Boss

The final boss of Minecraft found in The End dimension. A massive purple-black dragon that circles above End pillars. Players must destroy its End Crystals to deplete its health. Defeating it awards the Dragon Egg and triggers the End Poem credits sequence.

💀

Wither

Summoned Boss

A three-headed floating undead boss summoned by players using Soul Sand and Wither Skeleton skulls. Shoots explosive Wither Skulls and inflicts the Wither status effect. One of the game's hardest challenges. Drops the Nether Star used to craft the Beacon.

🧑‍🌾

Villager

Passive NPC

Neutral NPCs living in villages who trade goods for emeralds. Each villager has a profession (Farmer, Librarian, Blacksmith, etc.) determining their trades. Their distinctive "hmm" sound and large noses are iconic. Zombie Villagers can be cured back to normal.

👻

Herobrine

Minecraft Legend

The most famous Minecraft myth — a figure identical to Steve but with blank white eyes. Never officially in the game, yet Notch's patch notes always included "Removed Herobrine." A cornerstone of Minecraft's creepypasta culture and internet mythology.

🐷

Piglin

Nether Mob

Pig-like inhabitants of the Nether who are neutral toward gold-wearing players. Can be bartered with using gold ingots for various items. Zombify when exposed to the Overworld. Brute variant guards bastions. Central to Nether trading and survival strategies.

🦎

Axolotl

Aquatic Mob

Adorable aquatic creatures added in the 1.17 Caves & Cliffs update. Can be carried in buckets and fight alongside players against other aquatic mobs. Come in multiple colors including the extremely rare blue variant. Instantly became fan-favorites for their cute design.

📡

Warden

Hostile Mob

The terrifying blind guardian of the Deep Dark, added in the 1.19 Wild Update. Hunts by sensing vibrations and smell, and its ranged sonic boom attack makes it the strongest non-boss mob in the game — best avoided by sneaking.

🧚

Allay

Helper Mob

A tiny blue spirit that won the 2021 mob vote and arrived in the 1.19 Wild Update. Hand it an item and the Allay flies off to collect matching items for you. It loves music and dances near note blocks.

🤖

Iron Golem

Village Protector

Towering metal guardians that defend villages from raids and hostile mobs. Players can build their own from four iron blocks and a carved pumpkin. Known for tossing enemies into the air and gently handing poppies to villager children.

🐺

Wolf

Tameable Mob

Forest-dwelling wolves that can be tamed with bones to become loyal dogs. Tamed wolves fight at their owner's side, sit on command, and can wear dyed collars — and newer updates added regional wolf variants and wolf armor.

☁️

Ghast

Nether Mob

Enormous ghostly jellyfish that drift through the Nether, crying like cats and spitting explosive fireballs. Skilled players can punch a fireball back to defeat one — an achievement literally called "Return to Sender."

🔥

Blaze

Nether Mob

Floating fiery sentinels that spawn in Nether fortresses and hurl volleys of fireballs. Essential to beating the game: their blaze rods fuel brewing stands and craft the Eyes of Ender needed to find the End portal.

🧙

Witch

Hostile Mob

Purple-robed potion masters who live in swamp huts and join illager raids. Witches attack by throwing splash potions of poison, slowness, and harming, while drinking their own potions to heal and resist damage.

🕷️

Spider

Hostile Mob

Red-eyed arachnids that climb walls and pounce on players at night, but turn neutral in daylight. Drop string and spider eyes for crafting and brewing. The smaller, venomous Cave Spider variant lurks in abandoned mineshafts.

🟩

Slime

Hostile Mob

Bouncing green cubes found in swamps and special underground "slime chunks." Large slimes split into smaller ones when killed, and their slimeballs are essential for crafting leads, sticky pistons, and slime blocks.

🦇

Phantom

Hostile Mob

Winged undead terrors that dive-bomb players who haven't slept for three or more in-game days. Winner of the 2017 mob vote, the Phantom burns in sunlight and drops membranes used to repair Elytra wings.

🏹

Pillager

Illager Mob

Crossbow-wielding illagers from the 1.14 Village & Pillage update. They roam in patrols and storm villages during raids alongside Ravagers, Vindicators, and Evokers. Defeating a banner-carrying captain triggers the Bad Omen effect.

🦙

Wandering Trader

Passive NPC

A blue-robed merchant who randomly appears near players with two leashed llamas in tow. Sells exotic goods — saplings, coral, dyes, and other hard-to-find items — for emeralds before wandering off again.

🐝

Bee

Neutral Mob

Fuzzy pollinators added in the 1.15 Buzzy Bees update. Bees carry pollen between flowers, speed up crop growth, and fill hives with honey. They only sting when provoked — and, like real bees, perish afterwards.

🦖

Sniffer

Ancient Mob

A huge, gentle ancient creature revived by hatching Sniffer eggs dug from suspicious sand. Winner of the 2022 mob vote and added in 1.20 Trails & Tales, it sniffs out ancient Torchflower and Pitcher Pod seeds.

🐪

Camel

Rideable Mob

Desert-village dwellers added in 1.20 Trails & Tales. Camels are the first mount two players can ride at once, and their height and powerful dash ability let riders leap rivers and stay safely above melee attacks.

About Minecraft Characters

Minecraft, created by Markus "Notch" Persson and developed by Mojang, is the best-selling video game of all time. Its sandbox world features hundreds of unique mobs, creatures, and characters across multiple dimensions.

From the humble Overworld to the hellish Nether and mysterious End dimension, Minecraft's cast of characters has grown with each update — creating one of gaming's most expansive and beloved creature rosters.

Playable Minecraft Characters: Steve, Alex & All 9 Default Skins

Minecraft's playable characters are the default player skins. Steve — cyan shirt, dark hair — has been the face of the game since its earliest builds, and Alex — orange hair, slimmer arms — joined as the second default in 2014. Together they are the duo behind the famous "Minecraft characters Steve and Alex" search, and both appear as fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In late 2022 Mojang expanded the lineup to nine default skins, adding Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe — a more diverse cast so every new player can pick an avatar that fits before uploading a custom skin. None of them has an official backstory: in Minecraft, the player character is always you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the main character of Minecraft?

Steve is widely considered the main character of Minecraft, as the original default player skin since the game's earliest versions. However, Minecraft has no canonical protagonist — Steve, Alex, and the seven newer default skins (Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe) are all blank-slate avatars that represent the player.

Who are Steve and Alex?

Steve and Alex are Minecraft's two classic default player skins. Steve has been the face of the game since the beginning; Alex was added in 2014 with orange hair and a slimmer build. Both also appear as playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

How many characters and mobs are in Minecraft?

Vanilla Minecraft contains around 80 mobs as of 2026, spanning hostile mobs like the Creeper, Enderman, and Warden, passive mobs like the Villager, Allay, and Axolotl, and two bosses: the Ender Dragon and the Wither. Add the nine default player skins and legends like Herobrine, and the cast keeps growing with every update.

Is Herobrine a real Minecraft character?

No. Herobrine — a Steve lookalike with glowing white eyes — has never existed in any official version of Minecraft. He originated as a creepypasta in 2010, and Mojang turned the myth into a running joke by listing "Removed Herobrine" in patch notes for years.

What is the strongest mob in Minecraft?

The Ender Dragon and the Wither are the game's two bosses and its toughest official fights. Among regular mobs, the Warden from the Deep Dark is by far the strongest — its sonic boom can take down a player in netherite armor in a few hits, which is why the game encourages sneaking past it instead of fighting.
