In-depth profilesMonkey D. Luffy

One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy, a rubber-bodied teenager who sets out to find the legendary treasure left by the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, and claim the title for himself. Along the way he collects a crew of misfits, each with a dream of their own, and runs into almost every power in the world: pirate emperors, a militarised navy, a government that has been rewriting history for 800 years, and a long list of tyrants who badly need punching.

Eiichiro Oda's manga has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997, and the Toei anime since 1999. With a cast this size, the easiest way to keep track is by faction. This guide starts with the Straw Hats, then moves out through the Emperors, the Marines, the Warlords, the rival captains of the Worst Generation and the allies Luffy collects across the seas.

The Straw Hat Pirates

Luffy's crew is the heart of the series. Every member joins at the end of an arc built around their past, usually after Luffy has beaten whoever was holding them back. They're a found family in the most literal sense: a crew of people with nowhere else to go, each chasing a dream that sounds impossible.

Roronoa Zoro

Swordsman · First mate in all but name

Zoro fights with three swords, one held in his mouth, and has promised his late friend Kuina that he'll become the world's greatest swordsman. That means one day beating Mihawk. He's blunt, loyal and hopeless with directions. He's also the crew member most willing to make hard calls when Luffy won't.

Voice
Kazuya Nakai (JP) · Christopher Sabat (EN)

Nami

Navigator

Nami is a gifted navigator who wants to draw a map of the entire world. She joins the story as a thief working for Arlong, the fish-man who occupied her village, and her rescue at Arlong Park is one of the series' first big emotional payoffs. She fights with the Clima-Tact, a weather staff Usopp built and she later upgraded with Zeus, Big Mom's thundercloud.

Voice
Akemi Okamura (JP) · Luci Christian (EN)

Usopp

Sniper

Usopp is a compulsive liar from Syrup Village who wants to become a brave warrior of the sea. He's a coward who keeps choosing to fight anyway, which is what makes him brave. His slingshot marksmanship and gadgets win more battles than he gets credit for, and his falling-out with Luffy in Water 7 is one of the crew's rawest moments.

Voice
Kappei Yamaguchi (JP) · Sonny Strait (EN)

Sanji

Cook

Sanji is the crew's chef, a kick-only fighter who never uses his hands because they're for cooking. He dreams of finding the All Blue, a sea where fish from every ocean meet. He's a hopeless flirt with a strict code about never hurting women. The Whole Cake Island arc reveals that he's a runaway prince of the Vinsmoke family, whose genetic modifications he later can't escape.

Voice
Hiroaki Hirata (JP) · Eric Vale (EN)

Tony Tony Chopper

Doctor

Chopper is a reindeer who ate the Human-Human Fruit, so he can shift between a tiny mascot form, a human form and several larger combat shapes. He wants to become a doctor who can cure any disease, in honour of the mentor who took him in when his herd rejected him. His official bounty is a running joke at 1,000 berries, because the Marines think he's the crew's pet.

Voice
Ikue Ōtani (JP) · Brina Palencia (EN)

Nico Robin

Archaeologist

Robin is the last survivor of Ohara, an island of scholars the World Government destroyed for studying the forbidden history. She can read the Poneglyphs, which makes her essential to finding the One Piece, and her Flower-Flower Fruit lets her sprout limbs on any surface. Her quiet "I want to live" moment at Enies Lobby is the crew's turning point.

Voice
Yuriko Yamaguchi (JP) · Stephanie Young (EN)

Franky

Shipwright

Franky is a cola-powered cyborg from Water 7 who rebuilt his own body after a train accident. He built the Thousand Sunny to carry his dream of a ship that sails to the end of the world. He's loud, sentimental and constantly posing, and he cries more easily than anyone on the crew.

Voice
Kazuki Yao (JP) · Patrick Seitz (EN)

Brook

Musician

Brook is a living skeleton, brought back by the Revive-Revive Fruit after his entire crew died around him. He spent decades alone on a drifting ghost ship before Luffy found him at Thriller Bark. He's a polite gentleman with terrible skull jokes and a fast sword, and he's sailing to keep a promise to Laboon, the whale his old crew left behind.

Voice
Chō (JP) · Ian Sinclair (EN)

Jinbe

Helmsman · Former Warlord

Jinbe is a whale shark fish-man, a master of Fish-Man Karate and a former Warlord who gave up the title to stand with Whitebeard at Marineford. He was there when Ace died and helped Luffy through the aftermath. He formally joined the crew in Wano, giving the Straw Hats a calm, experienced voice and a helmsman who can read the sea itself.

Straw Hat bounties, ages and birthdays

Bounties in One Piece are less a measure of strength than of how much the World Government fears you. These are the crew's figures after the Wano arc, in the order they joined, with their post-timeskip ages.

The Four Emperors and their crews

The Emperors (Yonko) are the four pirates who rule the New World's seas. Together with the Marines and the Warlords, they formed the "three great powers" that kept the world in balance until the Wano arc changed the line-up. Their top officers are often stronger than most crews' captains.

Shanks

Emperor · Captain of the Red Hair Pirates

Shanks is the reason Luffy became a pirate. He lost an arm saving the boy from a sea king and left him the straw hat as a promise. He's easygoing and generous until someone crosses a line, and his Haki alone can knock out a crowd. What he really wants, and how he connects to the world's secrets, is still one of the story's biggest open questions.

Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard)

Emperor · Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates

Blackbeard served under Whitebeard for years, waiting for a Devil Fruit he wanted. He killed a crewmate for the Dark-Dark Fruit, betrayed Ace to the Marines, then stole Whitebeard's Tremor-Tremor Fruit at Marineford, becoming the only known person with two powers. He's patient, greedy and genuinely frightening, and he's widely seen as Luffy's final rival.

Buggy

Emperor · Leader of Cross Guild

Buggy was a cabin boy on Roger's ship alongside Shanks, and one of Luffy's earliest enemies in East Blue. Thanks to a chain of misunderstandings and his own talent for taking credit, he ended up founding Cross Guild with Mihawk and Crocodile and being named an Emperor. His Chop-Chop Fruit makes him immune to blades, which is about all he has going for him in a fight.

Kaido

Former Emperor · Captain of the Beast Pirates

Kaido, called the strongest creature in the world, can turn into a huge azure dragon. He ruled Wano through the puppet shogun Orochi and spent his life looking for a death worth having. Luffy's victory over him on Onigashima, and the Gear 5 awakening that made it possible, is the climax of the Wano arc.

Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)

Former Emperor · Ruler of Totland

Big Mom rules a sweets-themed island nation with dozens of her 85 children in key posts. Her Soul-Soul Fruit lets her take years of life from people and put them into objects, creating living homies like her sun Prometheus and thundercloud Zeus. She's terrifying when her food cravings take over, and she was defeated alongside Kaido in Wano.

Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)

Late Emperor · "World's Strongest Man"

Whitebeard was Roger's great rival and the only man said to match him. He called his crew his sons and wanted nothing more than a family. His Tremor-Tremor Fruit could split the sea. He died standing at Marineford while trying to save Ace, and his final words set off a new rush to the Grand Line.

Portgas D. Ace

Whitebeard's 2nd division commander

Ace was Luffy's sworn older brother, raised alongside him and Sabo on Dawn Island. He was also the secret son of Gol D. Roger, and the Marines' attempt to execute him triggered the Summit War. He died at Marineford shielding Luffy from Akainu, the loss that sent the story into its two-year timeskip.

Marco

Whitebeard's 1st division commander

Marco is a laid-back doctor whose Mythical Zoan fruit turns him into a regenerating blue phoenix. After Whitebeard's death he retired to a quiet island, but he returned to help in Wano. His healing flames make him nearly impossible to put down, which is why he spent the Onigashima raid holding off two of Kaido's strongest officers.

Charlotte Katakuri

Big Mom's Sweet Commander

Katakuri is Big Mom's strongest son, with Observation Haki so advanced he can see moments into the future. His Mochi-Mochi Fruit makes his body as elastic as Luffy's. His long duel with Luffy in the Whole Cake Island arc ends in mutual respect, and it's where Luffy first learns to see the future himself.

King

Beast Pirates All-Star

King is Kaido's right hand and one of the last surviving Lunarians, a near-extinct race that can surround itself with fire. He fights in the form of an Ancient Zoan pteranodon. His fight with Zoro on the roof of Onigashima is one of Wano's high points.

Queen

Beast Pirates All-Star

Queen is a flamboyant scientist and Ancient Zoan brachiosaurus who once worked with Dr. Vegapunk. He created the Plague Rounds used in Wano and loves a dance number. His battle with Sanji pushes Sanji to accept the Germa enhancements he'd been trying to deny.

Yamato

Kaido's child

Yamato is Kaido's only child and grew up idolising Kozuki Oden, the samurai Kaido executed, to the point of speaking as Oden and claiming his name. Their Mythical Zoan fruit, modelled on a wolf deity, makes them a match for Kaido himself. Yamato wanted to sail with Luffy but stayed behind to protect Wano.

Marines and the World Government

The Marines are the World Government's navy. Some believe in what they're doing, some are just following orders, and a few are working against the system from inside. Each officer's version of "justice" tells you a lot about them.

Monkey D. Garp

Vice Admiral · "Hero of the Marines"

Garp is Luffy's grandfather and one of the Marines' greatest legends. He cornered Roger several times and repeatedly turned down promotion to admiral so he could keep doing things his way. He wanted Luffy and Ace to join the Marines, and his choice between family and duty at Marineford is one of the war's quietest heartbreaks.

Sengoku

Former Fleet Admiral

Sengoku, "the Buddha," led the Marines through Marineford. His Mythical Zoan fruit turns him into a giant golden Buddha. Since retiring he has taken a mentoring role and a softer outlook, often seen with a goat and rice crackers, though he still knows more than he lets on.

Sakazuki (Akainu)

Fleet Admiral

Akainu is the hardest of the hard-liners. His creed of "absolute justice" means wiping out evil at any cost, including civilians. He killed Ace at Marineford with his Magma-Magma Fruit and later won the fleet admiral post in a ten-day duel with Aokiji. He's the face of everything the Straw Hats are up against.

Borsalino (Kizaru)

Admiral

Kizaru drawls, shrugs and moves at the speed of light thanks to the Glint-Glint Fruit. His relaxed manner hides a man who does terrible things without visible distress. He's the admiral who scattered the Straw Hats at Sabaody, and he faces them again on Egghead.

Issho (Fujitora)

Admiral

Fujitora is a blind swordsman who controls gravity, enough to pull meteors out of the sky. He joined the Marines to see the world's ugliness for himself and pushed to abolish the Warlord system. He's one of the few officers who openly respects Luffy.

Aramaki (Ryokugyu)

Admiral

Ryokugyu is the newest admiral seen in action, with a Logia fruit that turns him into a forest and lets him drain the life from plants. He shows up at the end of Wano wanting to take Luffy's head and backs down when Shanks intervenes. He's arrogant, impatient and clearly enjoys his rank.

Kuzan (Aokiji)

Former Admiral

Aokiji is a lazy-mannered ice user whose "lazy justice" made him the most morally flexible admiral. He let a young Robin escape Ohara and later spared the Straw Hats. After losing to Akainu he left the Marines, and he has since been seen sailing with Blackbeard, for reasons the story is still unpacking.

Smoker

Vice Admiral

Smoker is a cigar-chewing officer with the Smoke-Smoke Fruit, the first Logia user Luffy ever faced. He has spent the series chasing the Straw Hats, and was rescued by them more than once, which has left him with a grudging respect. He follows his own sense of right over orders.

Tashigi

Captain under Smoker

Tashigi is a near-sighted swordswoman who wants to recover famous blades from criminals. She looks strikingly like Zoro's late childhood friend Kuina, which unsettles him every time they meet. Her clumsiness hides real skill and a stubborn moral streak.

Koby

Captain · SWORD member

Koby was Luffy's very first friend in the series, a terrified cabin boy who decided to become a Marine. Trained by Garp, he has grown into a rising hero whose voice stopped the fighting at Marineford. He's living proof that Luffy changes people just by being around them.

Rob Lucci

CP0 agent

Lucci is the World Government's most dangerous assassin, an expert in the Six Powers martial art with a leopard Zoan fruit. He spent years undercover in Water 7, and his fight with Luffy at Enies Lobby is a classic. He returns as a CP0 agent on Egghead.

Donquixote Rosinante (Corazon)

Undercover Marine

Corazon was Doflamingo's younger brother and a Marine spy inside his crew. He stole the Op-Op Fruit to save the dying child Law and was killed by his own brother for it. Law spent the next thirteen years planning revenge in his name.

Magellan

Impel Down warden

Magellan ran the underwater prison Impel Down when Luffy broke in to save Ace. His Venom-Venom Fruit almost killed Luffy outright. He's devoted to his job and suffers from constant stomach trouble, and he was demoted after the breakout.

The Seven Warlords of the Sea

The Warlords (Shichibukai) were pirates licensed by the World Government to keep their crimes in exchange for serving its interests. The system was abolished during the Reverie, which turned the remaining members into ordinary targets overnight.

Dracule Mihawk

World's greatest swordsman

Mihawk is the man Zoro has sworn to surpass, a lone swordsman with hawk eyes and the black blade Yoru. He nearly killed Zoro in East Blue, then trained him for two years during the timeskip. He is now part of Cross Guild with Buggy and Crocodile.

Crocodile

Cross Guild co-founder

Crocodile was Luffy's first big Grand Line villain, a sand-controlling Warlord secretly running Baroque Works to take over Alabasta. Luffy only beat him on the third attempt. He escaped Impel Down with Luffy and is now a power behind Cross Guild.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Former king of Dressrosa

Doflamingo was born a World Noble and became the underworld broker "Joker," supplying artificial Devil Fruits to Kaido. His String-String Fruit let him puppet people and cage an entire island. Luffy's defeat of him freed Dressrosa and won Luffy a fleet of loyal crews.

Boa Hancock

Pirate Empress of Amazon Lily

Hancock rules a warrior island of women and can turn anyone attracted to her to stone. She's proud and cold to everyone except Luffy, who she fell for when he didn't react to her at all. She helped him reach Impel Down and Marineford, and her past as a World Noble's slave explains a lot about her armour.

Bartholomew Kuma

Former Warlord · Former Revolutionary

Kuma used his Paw-Paw Fruit to scatter the Straw Hats from Sabaody, saving their lives. He then guarded their ship for two years after the government had turned him into a mindless cyborg. The Egghead arc reveals his full story, and it's one of the saddest in the series. He is Bonney's father.

Gecko Moria

Former Warlord

Moria ruled Thriller Bark, a ghost ship where he stole people's shadows to animate an army of zombies. He'd lost his old crew to Kaido and decided only the dead were reliable. Luffy beat him with the help of a hundred borrowed shadows.

The Worst Generation

The Worst Generation is the press's name for the eleven rookies with bounties over 100 million who reached Sabaody at the same time (ten captains plus Zoro), with Blackbeard added as the twelfth. Several became allies, some were broken by Kaido, and Law and Kid ended up beside Luffy on the roof of Onigashima.

Eustass Kid

Captain of the Kid Pirates

Kid is a hot-tempered captain whose Magnet-Magnet Fruit lets him build himself a metal arm, which he needed after Shanks took the original. He's Luffy's rowdiest rival and fought beside Law against Big Mom in Wano. His next confrontation with Shanks went badly for him.

Killer

Kid's first mate

Killer is the masked "Massacre Soldier" who fights with spinning scythe blades. In Wano he was forced to eat a defective artificial fruit that left him unable to stop laughing, and he endured it to protect Kid. His duel with Hawkins frees him.

Jewelry Bonney

Captain of the Bonney Pirates

Bonney is a big eater with the Age-Age Fruit, which lets her change anyone's age, including her own. Her story connects to Kuma's, and the Egghead arc puts her at the centre as she tries to save her father from the World Government.

Basil Hawkins

Captain of the Hawkins Pirates

Hawkins is a quiet magician who reads tarot to decide every move. His Straw-Straw Fruit lets him pass damage onto straw dolls linked to other people. He sided with Kaido because his cards told him to, and lost to Killer on Onigashima.

X Drake

Undercover Marine

Drake was a Marine rear admiral before he became a pirate, and as it turns out he's still a Marine: a captain in the secret SWORD unit. He went undercover in Kaido's crew and transforms into an allosaurus. He sides with Luffy in Wano.

Capone Bege

Captain of the Fire Tank Pirates

Bege is a mafia-style captain whose Castle-Castle Fruit turns his body into a fortress full of soldiers. He married into Big Mom's family and then teamed up with Luffy in a plan to assassinate her. He's ruthless, but he's also a devoted husband and father.

Legends, family and the Revolutionary Army

Many of One Piece's most important characters are old men and dead men. The story keeps looking back to Roger's era to explain what's happening now.

Gol D. Roger

The Pirate King

Roger conquered the Grand Line, reached the final island and found the treasure. He then turned himself in. His last words at his execution started the Great Pirate Era. He was also Ace's father, and his reasons for dying the way he did are still being revealed.

Silvers Rayleigh

Roger's first mate · "Dark King"

Rayleigh was Roger's right hand and now lives quietly on Sabaody, coating ships and gambling. He trained Luffy in Haki during the timeskip. He's old but still able to stop an admiral in his tracks.

Kozuki Oden

Legendary samurai of Wano

Oden was a wild, big-hearted heir to Wano's shogunate who sailed with Whitebeard and then with Roger, all the way to the final island. Kaido and Orochi had him boiled alive. His retainers spent twenty years trying to keep his promise to open Wano.

Monkey D. Dragon

Leader of the Revolutionary Army

Dragon is Luffy's father and the world's most wanted man, leading an army that aims to overthrow the World Government. He rarely appears, and he has never had a proper conversation with his son. He did once save Luffy in Loguetown without introducing himself.

Sabo

Revolutionary chief of staff

Sabo is Luffy and Ace's third brother, a noble's son who ran away and was believed dead after a World Noble fired on his boat. He survived with amnesia and joined Dragon. Sabo inherited Ace's Flame-Flame Fruit at Dressrosa, keeping their brother's fire alive.

Dr. Vegapunk

The World Government's chief scientist

Vegapunk is the genius behind the Pacifista cyborgs, artificial Devil Fruits and much of the world's technology. On Egghead he has split himself into several satellite bodies, each one an aspect of his personality. His encounter with the Straw Hats becomes a turning point for the whole world.

Allies, rivals and arc villains

Every arc introduces a new island, a new ruler and someone who needs help. Many of those characters come back years later. These are the ones fans remember best.

Nefertari Vivi

Princess of Alabasta

Vivi infiltrated Baroque Works under the name Miss Wednesday to save her country from Crocodile. She sailed with the Straw Hats and chose her people over adventure at the end. Her farewell at the docks is one of the series' best-loved scenes.

Bentham (Bon Clay)

Former Baroque Works officer

Bon Clay is a ballet-dancing okama whose Clone-Clone Fruit copies faces. He began as an enemy, then sacrificed his own freedom twice to help Luffy, first in Alabasta and again at Impel Down. For many fans he is the series' purest picture of friendship.

Carrot

Mink warrior of Zou

Carrot is a cheerful rabbit mink who stowed away with the Straw Hats for Whole Cake Island. Under a full moon she can take the powerful Sulong form. She later steps up into a leadership role in her homeland.

Shirahoshi

Mermaid princess of Fish-Man Island

Shirahoshi is a giant, shy mermaid who can call Sea Kings. That ability makes her the living Ancient Weapon Poseidon. She spent years locked in a tower for her safety, and Luffy's protection of her ties into the series' long-running question of what the "promise" to Fish-Man Island means.

Kin'emon

Leader of the Nine Red Scabbards

Kin'emon is a Wano samurai who travelled twenty years into the future to keep Oden's promise. He uses foxfire swordplay and a fruit that conjures clothes. He spends most of Zou and Wano gathering allies for the raid on Onigashima.

Perona

The Ghost Princess

Perona served Moria on Thriller Bark, and her Hollow-Hollow Fruit creates ghosts that drain the will to live. She spent the timeskip with Mihawk and an injured Zoro, bickering with both. She's grown into a reluctant friend of the crew.

Bartolomeo

Captain of the Barto Club

Bartolomeo is a punkish pirate and the Straw Hats' biggest fan, moved to tears just by being near them. His Barrier-Barrier Fruit creates walls nothing can break. He leads one of the crews in Luffy's Grand Fleet.

Arlong

Captain of the Arlong Pirates

Arlong is a sawshark fish-man who took over Nami's village and forced her to draw maps for him. His contempt for humans has roots in the persecution of fish-men, a theme the series develops much later. His defeat made Luffy's first bounty.

Enel

Self-proclaimed god of Skypiea

Enel ruled a sky island with lightning powers and near-perfect Observation Haki. He was untouchable until he met a rubber man. After his defeat he flew off to the moon, where a cover story follows his adventures.

Caesar Clown

Mad scientist

Caesar is a former colleague of Vegapunk whose Gas-Gas Fruit makes him deadly at close range. He ran cruel experiments on children at Punk Hazard and made the materials for Doflamingo's artificial fruits. He's cowardly, cruel and frequently used as a hostage.

Kurozumi Orochi

Shogun of Wano

Orochi took over Wano's shogunate with Kaido's backing and spent twenty years taking revenge on the land that had despised his clan. His Devil Fruit turns him into an eight-headed serpent. He's cowardly and petty, and his rule is why Wano's people are starving.

Don Krieg

East Blue pirate admiral

Krieg was a ruthless armoured pirate whose fleet was wrecked trying to enter the Grand Line. He tried to take the Baratie by force, and Luffy stopped him there. His fight is mostly remembered because of what it showed about Sanji.

Voice cast

The Japanese cast has stayed remarkably stable since 1999. The English dub most viewers know comes from Funimation (now Crunchyroll), which took over from an earlier, heavily edited 4Kids version.

Themes and where to start

Under the jokes and the fights, One Piece keeps returning to the same few ideas: freedom, inherited will, and who gets to tell history. Each Straw Hat is rescued from someone who owns them: a fish-man warlord, a family, a government. Luffy's dream of being "the freest person" is a deliberate contrast with a World Government that controls the seas, the past and its own nobility. Its long cast arcs make it a standard example in discussions of ensemble casts, and Luffy's rivalry with Blackbeard sits alongside the ones in our iconic rivalries guide.

  1. Start at the beginning: East Blue is short, light and sets up Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji. If the anime's early animation puts you off, the Netflix live action covers the same ground.
  2. Push through to Arlong Park: this is where most people get hooked. Alabasta, Enies Lobby and Marineford are the next big payoffs.
  3. Consider the manga for later arcs: the anime slows down noticeably after the timeskip. Our manga vs anime guide covers the trade-offs, and the watch order guide explains where the films and filler fit.
  4. Don't skip the cover stories: the manga's chapter cover pages follow side characters between arcs, and several of them pay off much later.

If you like One Piece's mix of heart and huge casts, Naruto and Bleach are its fellow "Big Three" from Shonen Jump's 2000s heyday, and Hunter x Hunter is a darker take on the same adventure structure.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the main characters in One Piece?

The main characters are the ten Straw Hat Pirates: captain Monkey D. Luffy, swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, sniper Usopp, cook Sanji, doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook and helmsman Jinbe. Nefertari Vivi, who sailed with them through Alabasta, is often counted as an honorary member.

Who are the Four Emperors in One Piece now?

After the Wano arc, the Four Emperors are Shanks, Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard), Monkey D. Luffy and Buggy. Kaido and Big Mom lost their titles when they were defeated at Onigashima, and Whitebeard died earlier at the Battle of Marineford.

Who is the strongest One Piece character?

Oda hasn't settled it, which is part of the fun. Among living characters, Shanks, Blackbeard, Mihawk, Fleet Admiral Akainu and Gear 5 Luffy are usually ranked at the top. Historically, Gol D. Roger and Whitebeard are treated as the strongest pirates who ever lived. Our power scaling guide explains why these debates never really end.

What Devil Fruit does Luffy have?

For most of the story it was called the Gum-Gum Fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi), which made his body rubber. The Wano arc revealed its true name: the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan the World Government had hidden for centuries. Its awakening is what unlocks Gear 5.

Who joined Luffy's crew first?

Roronoa Zoro, recruited at the Marine base in Shells Town in the first arc. Nami, Usopp and Sanji followed in the East Blue saga, then Chopper, Robin, Franky and Brook. Jinbe is the most recent member, formally joining during the Wano arc.

When is Luffy's birthday?

Luffy's birthday is May 5, Japan's Children's Day. The other Straw Hats' birthdays are in the crew table on this page, and you can find more in our character birthdays calendar.

How many characters are in One Piece?

Well over a thousand named characters have appeared across more than 1,100 chapters, which makes it one of the largest casts in fiction. This page covers the 70 or so who matter most to the main story and the ones people search for most.
