Genshin Impact Characters

A nation-by-nation guide to Teyvat's playable cast, from Mondstadt's knights to Natlan's tribes. You'll find the Traveler and Paimon, all six Archons met so far, the Fatui Harbingers, and a table of each character's element, weapon and rarity.

53 characters14 min readUpdated

Genshin Impact is set in Teyvat, a world of seven nations, each watched over by a god called an Archon and tied to one of seven elements. You arrive as the Traveler, an outsider separated from your twin by an unknown god, and you cross the nations one by one in search of them. Along the way you meet the people who live there, and many of them become playable characters you can recruit through the game's "wish" system.

HoYoverse (formerly miHoYo) launched the game in September 2020, and it has added new characters almost every update since. This guide works through the cast nation by nation, Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine and Natlan, then covers the Fatui and finishes with a reference table of every character's element, weapon and rarity. The roster keeps growing, so the newest arrivals may not be listed yet.

The Traveler and Paimon

The Archons

Each nation's god is a major character in its chapter, and most are playable. Part of the fun is that almost none of them are what they first seem.

Venti

Barbatos, Anemo Archon · Bow · 5★

A wine-loving bard who turns out to be Mondstadt's god of freedom. He believes so firmly that people should rule themselves that he barely rules at all. Behind the jokes is a god carrying old grief for a friend whose face he now wears.

Voice (English)
Erika Harlacher

Zhongli

Morax, Geo Archon · Polearm · 5★

A refined consultant at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor who knows a suspicious amount about history. He's Rex Lapis, the god of contracts, who staged his own death to see whether Liyue could govern itself. His retirement, wallet-free and fond of tea, is a running gag.

Voice (English)
Keith Silverstein

Raiden Shogun

Ei, Electro Archon · Polearm · 5★

Inazuma's ruler pursues "Eternity" by freezing her nation in place. That leads to the closing of Inazuma's borders and a decree confiscating people's Visions. The Shogun who enforces it is a puppet. The real Ei is meditating inside her own mind, hiding from a world that has taken too many people she loved.

Voice (English)
Anne Yatco

Nahida

Lesser Lord Kusanali, Dendro Archon · Catalyst · 5★

Sumeru's young god of wisdom has spent five centuries confined in the Sanctuary of Surasthana by the scholars of the Akademiya, who doubt she lives up to her predecessor. She learns about the world through other people's dreams, and her quiet kindness drives one of the game's best story arcs.

Furina

Hydro Archon (in public) · Sword · 5★

Fontaine's dramatic, attention-loving Archon spends her days hosting trials as entertainment. The truth is that she's a human who played the part of a god for five hundred years to protect a plan made by the real Archon, Focalors. Afterwards she has to learn who she is without the role.

Mavuika

Pyro Archon · Claymore · 5★

Natlan's Archon is a warrior-leader who rides into battle alongside her people against the Abyss. She's direct, warm and willing to pay a heavy price to save her nation, a very different kind of god from the hidden or disguised Archons before her.

Mondstadt: the city of freedom

A wind-swept, European-flavoured city defended by the Knights of Favonius. It's where the story begins, and its characters are among the most familiar to long-time players.

Jean

Acting Grand Master · Anemo · Sword · 5★

The overworked leader of the Knights of Favonius, holding the city together while the real Grand Master is away. Jean is dutiful to a fault, and the game lets you see how little she sleeps.

Diluc

Owner of Dawn Winery · Pyro · Claymore · 5★

A wealthy, brooding winemaker who left the Knights after his father's death and now protects the city alone at night. His frosty relationship with his adoptive brother Kaeya is one of Mondstadt's best-known subplots.

Kaeya

Cavalry Captain · Cryo · Sword · 4★

A charming, evasive knight whose eyepatch hides more than an eye. He's connected to the fallen kingdom of Khaenri'ah, and that makes him one of the most important characters for the game's long-term mystery.

Voice (English)
Josey Montana McCoy

Amber

Outrider · Pyro · Bow · 4★

The first character the Traveler meets in Mondstadt. She's an energetic scout and gliding champion who believes in the Knights wholeheartedly, and she's the game's welcome mat.

Klee

Spark Knight · Pyro · Catalyst · 5★

A small child with a backpack full of bombs and a habit of blowing up fish in a lake, which earns her regular spells in solitary confinement. The adults all adore her and fear her a little.

Albedo

Chief Alchemist · Geo · Sword · 5★

A calm, curious alchemist and painter who's an artificial human made by a legendary alchemist. He worries, privately, about what he might become.

Eula

Reconnaissance Captain · Cryo · Claymore · 5★

The descendant of a disgraced aristocratic clan who joined the Knights to make up for her family's past. She threatens to take "vengeance" on everyone who's kind to her.

Bennett

Adventurer · Pyro · Sword · 4★

A good-natured adventurer cursed with terrible luck, whose guild branch has only one member: him. In play, his healing and attack-boosting burst has kept him in teams since launch.

Fischl

Adventurer · Electro · Bow · 4★

A teenage girl who insists she's the "Prinzessin der Verurteilung" from another world. Her raven familiar, Oz, translates her dramatic speeches for everyone else.

Mona, Lisa and Barbara

Astrologist, librarian, idol

Mona is a gifted, permanently broke astrologist; Lisa a lazy but powerful librarian; and Barbara, Jean's younger sister, is the city's cheerful deaconess and pop idol.

Liyue: the harbour of contracts

A sprawling, Chinese-inspired trading nation run by the Liyue Qixing merchant council, with the immortal adepti in the mountains around it.

Hu Tao

77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor · Pyro · Polearm · 5★

A mischievous young funeral director who writes bad poems, runs strange promotions and pranks everyone in sight. Under the jokes she takes her job, guiding the dead and respecting the boundary of life and death, completely seriously.

Xiao

Vigilant Yaksha · Anemo · Polearm · 5★

The last of the yakshas, adepti who fought demons for Morax. He suffers from karmic debt, the accumulated hatred of everything he's killed. He keeps everyone at arm's length to protect them, and he's very fond of almond tofu.

Ganyu

Qixing Secretary · Cryo · Bow · 5★

A half-qilin adeptus who has served as secretary to Liyue's leaders for thousands of years. She's gentle, overworked and unsure whether she belongs among humans or adepti.

Keqing

Yuheng of the Qixing · Electro · Sword · 5★

A sharp, hardworking official who believes people shouldn't need gods to run their lives. Zhongli's chapter gives her a chance to find out whether she's right.

Ningguang and Beidou

Tianquan of the Qixing / Captain of the Crux

Ningguang is a self-made billionaire who owns the floating Jade Chamber. Beidou captains the Crux fleet, a pirate-adjacent crew. The two clash constantly but respect each other.

Shenhe

Adeptus disciple · Cryo · Polearm · 5★

A woman raised in the mountains by an adeptus after a tragic childhood, wearing red cords that bind her dangerous impulses. She's learning, slowly, how to live among people.

Yelan

Intelligence agent · Hydro · Bow · 5★

A mysterious information broker who works in the shadows for Liyue's government. She likes taking gambles, as long as she's the one who rigged them.

Xiangling and Xingqiu

Chef and young master · 4★

Xiangling is an adventurous chef who cooks with her fire-breathing panda Guoba. Xingqiu is a bookish young noble who moonlights as a swordsman. Both have been staples of popular teams since the game launched.

Inazuma: the islands of eternity

A Japanese-inspired island nation sealed off from the world, divided between the Shogun's government and a resistance on Watatsumi Island.

Kaedehara Kazuha

Wandering samurai · Anemo · Sword · 5★

A poetic ronin sailing with Beidou's fleet, wanted at home after a friend died defying the Shogun. He listens to the wind and speaks in verse, and he's the fan favourite at the centre of Inazuma's story.

Kamisato Ayaka and Ayato

The Yashiro Commission siblings · 5★

Ayaka is a graceful noblewoman, known as the "Shirasagi Himegimi", who wants a normal friendship. Her brother Ayato is the clan's smiling, calculating head, who works the system from inside.

Yae Miko

Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine · Electro · Catalyst · 5★

A fox-eared shrine priestess, publisher of light novels and the Shogun's closest friend. She's manipulative, amused by everything and quietly the one making sure Inazuma recovers.

Yoimiya

Fireworks maker · Pyro · Bow · 5★

A sunny fireworks artisan in Inazuma City who befriends everyone and wants people to remember small, happy moments. She's an easy favourite.

Sangonomiya Kokomi

Divine Priestess of Watatsumi · Hydro · Catalyst · 5★

The strategist leading the resistance against the Vision Hunt Decree. She's brilliant but introverted, and she schedules her own "recharge" time between battles.

Arataki Itto

Leader of the Arataki Gang · Geo · Claymore · 5★

A loud, big-hearted oni who picks fights with Kujou Sara and challenges people to beetle duels. He's ridiculous, and much more principled than he looks.

Wanderer

Formerly Scaramouche · Anemo · Catalyst · 5★

A puppet created by Ei and later the 6th Fatui Harbinger, Scaramouche. After the events in Sumeru he tries to erase his own past, and returns as the bitter, sharp-tongued Wanderer.

Sumeru: the nation of wisdom

A rainforest-and-desert nation with South Asian, Middle Eastern and North African influences, governed by the scholars of the Akademiya.

Tighnari and Collei

Forest Watcher and trainee · Dendro · Bow

Tighnari is a fennec-eared botanist who patrols Avidya Forest and lectures anyone careless with mushrooms. Collei is his trainee, recovering from a traumatic childhood and an illness called Eleazar.

Cyno

General Mahamatra · Electro · Polearm · 5★

The Akademiya's feared enforcer, who hunts down scholars who break its rules. Off duty he tells terrible puns and plays a card game called Genius Invokation obsessively.

Alhaitham and Kaveh

Scribe and architect

Alhaitham is a brilliant, deeply unbothered scholar who does exactly as much as he wants. Kaveh is an idealistic, debt-ridden architect who rents a room from him. Their bickering is one of Sumeru's highlights.

Nilou

Dancer at the Zubayr Theater · Hydro · Sword · 5★

A kind-hearted dancer who fights to keep the arts alive under an Akademiya that has banned them as a waste of time.

Dehya

Eremite mercenary · Pyro · Claymore · 5★

A tough desert-born mercenary with a big heart, torn between her employers and the desert people she comes from.

Faruzan, Layla and Dori

Scholar, student, merchant · 4★

Faruzan is a scholar trapped in a ruin for a century who now demands respect as your "senior". Layla is a sleep-deprived astronomy student. Dori is a merchant who'll sell you anything for enough Mora.

Fontaine: the nation of justice

A French-inspired, steam-powered nation obsessed with courtroom drama, and haunted by a prophecy that its people will dissolve into the sea.

Neuvillette

Chief Justice · Hydro · Catalyst · 5★

Fontaine's solemn, impartial judge, who feels the rain fall when he's sad. It turns out he's the Hydro Dragon, the original sovereign of water, and his ruling at the end of the chapter changes Fontaine for good.

Wriothesley

Duke of the Fortress of Meropide · Cryo · Catalyst · 5★

The administrator of Fontaine's underwater prison, a former inmate who now runs it with his fists and a surprising sense of fairness.

Navia

Leader of the Spina di Rosula · Geo · Claymore · 5★

A bright, generous young woman who takes over her late father's organisation and goes looking for the truth behind his death.

Lyney, Lynette and Freminet

Magicians of the House of the Hearth

Three siblings who perform stage magic and work as agents for a Fatui orphanage. Lyney is the charming showman, Lynette his deadpan assistant and Freminet a shy diver.

Clorinde

Arlecchino

The Knave, 4th Harbinger · Pyro · Polearm · 5★

The cold, terrifying "Father" of the House of the Hearth orphanage. She raises her children as Fatui agents but protects them fiercely. She's one of the most complex Harbingers.

Natlan: the nation of war

A volcanic nation of tribes, dragons and endless fighting against the Abyss, with influences from Africa and the Americas. Its people can inherit "Ancient Names" from the heroes who came before them.

Mualani

Surf guide · Hydro · Catalyst · 5★

A cheerful guide from the People of the Springs who turns everything into a sales pitch and rides waves into battle.

Kinich

Hunter · Dendro · Claymore · 5★

A pragmatic hunter-for-hire who works with Ajaw, a tiny, loud, self-proclaimed dragon lord. Their bickering partnership carries a lot of Natlan's humour.

Xilonen

Blacksmith · Geo · Sword · 5★

A laid-back smith who forges the tribes' weapons and moves around on roller-blade-like blades.

Citlali

Shaman of the Masters of the Night-Wind · Cryo · Catalyst · 5★

A centuries-old shaman with tremendous power who'd rather stay home playing video games, and who is much warmer than she lets on.

Kachina, Chasca and Ororon

Natlan's newcomers

Kachina is a young fighter with a drill who's anxious about proving herself. Chasca is a sharp-shooting peacekeeper. Ororon is a drowsy, gentle young man from the Masters of the Night-Wind who would rather tend his farm than fight.

The Fatui Harbingers

The Fatui are the diplomatic and military arm of Snezhnaya, serving the Cryo Archon, the Tsaritsa. Their eleven Harbingers are elite agents who appear in almost every chapter, usually to take an Archon's Gnosis.

Tartaglia (Childe)

11th Harbinger · Hydro · Bow · 5★

A battle-hungry young man who arrives in Liyue on a mission and fights for the thrill of it. He writes letters home and adores his little brother Teucer, which makes him hard to hate.

Voice (English)
Christopher Wehkamp

La Signora

Making sense of the cast

Each nation's characters share a visual and naming language. Liyue's names have Chinese roots, Inazuma's Japanese, Fontaine's French, so you can often guess a character's home from the name alone. We dig into that in character naming conventions. Elements work the same way: every character carries a Vision, a gem tied to one element, and that colour runs through their design.

  1. Play the Archon Quests in order — The main story introduces each nation's key characters, and later chapters assume you've met the earlier ones.
  2. Don't skip Story Quests — Each major character has a personal quest that explains far more about them than their banner trailer.
  3. Pick characters you like — The game's hardest content is optional, and favourites are a better guide than any tier list.

Genshin's open world was openly influenced by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and its region-hopping, collect-the-cast structure owes a lot to Pokémon. If you like big, faction-driven fantasy casts, try League of Legends and its animated series Arcane.

Frequently asked questions

How many playable characters are in Genshin Impact?

Around a hundred, and the number goes up with almost every version update, usually by one to three characters every six weeks or so. Any fixed count goes out of date quickly, so the table on this page sticks to the characters released from launch through the Natlan chapter.

Who is the main character of Genshin Impact?

The Traveler, whom you name yourself. You choose to play as Aether (the brother) or Lumine (the sister), and the twin you don't pick becomes the missing sibling you spend the story searching for. Paimon, your floating guide, is with you the whole way.

Who are the seven Archons?

The gods ruling Teyvat's seven nations: Venti (Barbatos, Anemo, Mondstadt), Zhongli (Morax, Geo, Liyue), the Raiden Shogun (Ei, Electro, Inazuma), Nahida (Kusanali, Dendro, Sumeru), Focalors (Hydro, Fontaine), whose role was carried out in public by Furina, Mavuika (Pyro, Natlan), and the Tsaritsa (Cryo, Snezhnaya), who hasn't appeared in person in the game.

Is Childe a villain?

Tartaglia, known as Childe, is the 11th of the Fatui Harbingers, the Tsaritsa's elite agents, and he causes real damage in Liyue. He's also cheerful, honourable in his own way and devoted to his younger siblings, so the game treats him as an antagonist you can like rather than a pure villain.

Who is the strongest character in Genshin Impact?

In the story, the Archons and a few ancient beings such as Neuvillette, the Hydro Sovereign, are the most powerful. In gameplay, strength depends on team and patch. Characters such as Bennett, Kazuha and Nahida have stayed valuable for years because of how they support a team, which is why we don't publish a fixed ranking here.

Do Genshin characters have different voice actors in each language?

Yes. Genshin has full voice casts in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean, and players can switch between them. Some English roles have been recast over the years, so credits for a character can differ depending on when a scene was recorded.
