In-depth profilesJinx

Arcane is set in the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, which are really one city stacked on top of itself. Piltover, up top, is rich, orderly and proud of its inventors. Zaun, the undercity below, runs on factory smoke, crime and a drug called shimmer. The two halves need each other and resent each other, and almost every character in the show is defined by which side of that divide they started on.

The series follows two sisters from the undercity, Vi and Powder, and two scientists, Jayce and Viktor, whose invention of hextech (magic made usable through engineering) tips the balance of power between the cities. It was made by Riot Games with the French studio Fortiche and released on Netflix in two seasons, in 2021 and 2024. This guide covers the cast group by group, then the voice actors and the League of Legends champions behind them.

The undercity: Vi, Jinx and Zaun

The show opens with children in the undercity, and that's where its heart stays. Vander's makeshift family, Silco's criminal empire and Ekko's rebels all fight over the same streets, and each side claims to be protecting the people who live there.

Vander

Bar owner · Former rebel leader

Vander once led a violent uprising against Piltover, saw the cost, and chose peace. He took in Vi and Powder after their parents died and runs a bar called The Last Drop while keeping an uneasy truce with Piltover's enforcers. He's the father figure the sisters spend the rest of the series measuring everyone else against. What happens to him after the first act is one of the show's slow-burning mysteries.

Voice
JB Blanc

Silco

Crime lord · Would-be founder of Zaun

Silco was once Vander's closest ally, and the scar over his eye is a reminder of how that friendship ended. He wants the undercity to become an independent nation, and he funds that dream with shimmer, extortion and murder. He's also the person who picks up the abandoned Powder and raises her as his own. The show never lets you forget he's a monster, and never lets you doubt that he loves her.

Voice
Jason Spisak

Ekko

Firelights leader · Childhood friend

Ekko is the little kid who tagged along with Vi's crew and was closest to Powder. Years later he leads the Firelights, a group of young undercity rebels hidden in a secret refuge, who fight Silco's shimmer trade with hoverboards and stolen tech. He's the clearest picture of what the undercity could be if it weren't being fought over. His duel with Jinx is one of the most talked-about sequences in the show.

Voice
Reed Shannon

Sevika

Silco's enforcer

Sevika is Silco's right hand: a hard, cynical brawler who fights with a mechanical arm and a steady supply of shimmer. She resents how much attention Silco gives Jinx, and she's a constant reminder that his empire runs on loyalty that has to be paid for. Season two gives her more room to show what she actually believes about the undercity's future.

Voice
Amirah Vann

Singed

Chemist

Singed is a quiet, disfigured scientist who works in the shadows for Silco and created shimmer. He talks about progress in the same calm voice whether he's discussing medicine or experimenting on living creatures. His past connects to Viktor's in a way the show reveals gradually, and his projects are behind several of its darkest turns.

Mylo and Claggor

Vander's adopted boys

Mylo is the mouthy one who picks on Powder; Claggor is the quiet, steady one. Along with Vi and Powder, they make up Vander's adopted family in the opening episodes. Their fates in the first act, and Powder's part in them, follow Jinx through the rest of the series.

Benzo

Shopkeeper

Benzo runs a junk shop in the undercity and is one of Vander's oldest friends. He's a kind presence in Powder and Ekko's childhood, and his small role matters more than its screen time: he's one of the reasons Ekko grows up the way he does.

Finn and the chem-barons

Silco's business partners

Finn is a smug chem-baron who runs a slice of Silco's operation and openly wonders whether he'd do a better job. The chem-barons as a group are the undercity's would-be aristocracy: rich from shimmer, loyal to whoever pays, and quick to look for a new patron when Silco's grip slips.

Piltover: the council, the inventors and the enforcers

Piltover calls itself the City of Progress, and the show takes its idealism half seriously. Its council is made up of the heads of wealthy families, its enforcers police the bridge between the cities, and its academy is where Jayce and Viktor turn a dangerous idea into hextech.

Jayce Talis

Inventor · Councillor

Jayce is a confident young scientist whose experiments with magic get him expelled, then nearly arrested, until Viktor helps him make hextech work. He becomes Piltover's golden boy and is quickly pulled into politics. Jayce genuinely wants to help people. His tragedy is that each compromise he makes for the greater good takes him further from Viktor and closer to the kind of leader he never meant to be.

Voice
Kevin Alejandro

Viktor

Scientist · Jayce's partner

Viktor grew up in the undercity, walks with a cane and is quietly dying of an illness he doesn't like to talk about. He works as Heimerdinger's assistant until he sees what Jayce has discovered and becomes his partner. Viktor wants hextech to lift people out of suffering, starting with the place he came from. As his health fails, that goal grows into something much larger and more unsettling.

Voice
Harry Lloyd

Mel Medarda

Councillor

Mel is Piltover's most politically skilled councillor and the one who sees hextech's commercial potential first. She's also the daughter of a Noxian warlord, sent away as a child because her mother saw her gentleness as a weakness. She becomes Jayce's patron and lover, and her family history becomes much more important in season two, when it turns out she has abilities of her own.

Voice
Toks Olagundoye

Heimerdinger

Yordle professor · Councillor

Heimerdinger is a yordle, a small, long-lived being, who has been on Piltover's council for centuries. His caution about hextech can look like cowardice to young inventors in a hurry, but he has watched too many brilliant ideas end badly. After he's pushed off the council, he ends up in the undercity, where his time with Ekko shows a gentler side of him.

Voice
Mick Wingert

Marcus

Sheriff

Marcus is Piltover's sheriff, and secretly on Silco's payroll. He took the deal to protect his daughter, and he hates himself for it. He's one of the show's quieter tragedies: a man who knows exactly what he's doing wrong and can't see a way out.

Grayson

Former sheriff

Grayson is the sheriff in the childhood episodes. She works with Vander to keep the peace between the cities and is one of the few people in authority who tries to deal with the undercity fairly. Her partnership with Vander is the peace that Silco sets out to break.

Cassandra and Tobias Kiramman

Caitlyn's parents

Cassandra is a councillor and a pragmatist who worries her daughter is wasting herself on police work. Tobias is the warmer, more indulgent parent. Through them the show sketches what it means to be born at the top in Piltover, and why Caitlyn feels she has something to prove.

Sky Young

Lab assistant

Sky is a junior researcher who admires Viktor and helps in his and Jayce's lab. She's kind, curious and in the wrong place when hextech's risks start to show.

The council

Hoskel, Salo, Bolbok, Shoola

The rest of Piltover's council are wealthy heads of houses who mostly vote to protect their own interests. Salo, the loudest, is especially hostile to the undercity.

Noxus and season two arrivals

Season two widens the lens. The empire of Noxus takes an interest in hextech, a few new faces join the undercity, and the line between science and older magic starts to blur.

Ambessa Medarda

Noxian warlord · Mel's mother

Ambessa is a battle-hardened general who believes strength is the only thing that keeps a family alive. She arrives in Piltover looking for weapons, and she's one of the most commanding presences in the show: charming, ruthless and sincere in her own way. Her clash with Mel over what power is for drives much of season two's politics.

Voice
Shohreh Aghdashloo

Isha

Undercity orphan

Isha is a small, silent girl who attaches herself to Jinx. She's tough, funny and completely unafraid of her. Through Isha, Jinx gets a chance to be the older sibling she never managed to be, which makes their scenes together some of the warmest in season two.

Warwick

Shimmer-fuelled beast

Warwick is a huge, wolf-like creature that stalks the undercity in season two. Who he is, and what was done to make him, is one of the season's key reveals, and it lands hardest on Vi. League players will recognise the name long before the show explains it.

Maddie Nolen

Enforcer

Maddie is a young enforcer on Caitlyn's team in season two. She's eager to please, especially around Caitlyn, and her loyalties are not as simple as they look.

Loris

Enforcer turned bar regular

Loris is a big, mild enforcer who befriends Vi. He's comic relief in a grim season and one of the few Piltover officers who seems to like the undercity.

What happens in season two

Season one ends with Jinx firing a hextech rocket into Piltover's council chamber after a final, disastrous meeting between the sisters, in which she also kills Silco by accident. Season two picks up in the aftermath. Piltover turns hard-line and militarised, Caitlyn grieves her mother and takes command of the enforcers alongside Ambessa, and Vi and Caitlyn's relationship becomes the romance the first season hinted at.

The season's larger arc belongs to Viktor. After a near-death experience with the hexcore, he starts healing undercity residents and gathering followers, then pursues a "glorious evolution" that would remove pain by changing human nature itself. Jayce, who has seen where that leads, is the one who has to stop him. Meanwhile Warwick is revealed to be Vander, rebuilt by Singed, and Ekko travels through a hextech anomaly into another version of the world where Powder never lost her family.

The finale gathers all the threads into a final battle over Piltover. Several main characters' endings are deliberately left open, and the show trusts you to sit with the uncertainty rather than tying everything up.

Arcane voice cast

Arcane cast mostly screen actors rather than League's own game voice actors, so many champions sound different in the show than they do in the game.

Arcane characters in League of Legends

Most of Arcane's leads are playable champions in League of Legends, and the show is effectively their origin story. It doesn't always match older game lore exactly; Riot has treated Arcane as the main version of these characters' history.

What the characters are really about

Arcane is about inequality and inheritance: what you're handed by the people who raise you, and whether you can put it down. Vander gives Vi his sense of responsibility and Powder his fear of being a burden. Silco gives Jinx unconditional love and a war to fight with it. Cassandra gives Caitlyn privilege and a need to justify it. Ambessa gives Mel the belief that kindness is weakness, and Mel spends the series trying to disprove it.

The sisters' story is one of the great modern examples of a rivalry built on love, and Silco is a textbook case of the sympathetic antagonist covered in our villain types guide. Jinx herself sits on the edge of the anti-hero category without ever quite fitting it. Visually, the show's split palette, warm gold for Piltover and toxic green and purple for Zaun, is a good case study for character and colour design.

If you liked Arcane's mix of mature storytelling and striking animation, Hazbin Hotel is another adult-oriented animated series built around damaged people and the families they choose, though in a much more comic register.

How to watch

  1. Season one, Acts 1–3 — nine episodes. Act 1 is the sisters' childhood, Acts 2 and 3 jump forward several years.
  2. Season two, Acts 1–3 — nine more episodes that finish the story.
  3. Optional: League of Legends — play the champions, or read their in-game biographies, if you want to see the wider world of Runeterra the show only hints at.

There's no prequel or required reading. Watch in release order.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the main characters in Arcane?

The story is built around two sisters, Vi and Powder (who grows up to become Jinx), and two inventors, Jayce Talis and Viktor, who create hextech. Caitlyn Kiramman, Silco, Ekko, Mel Medarda and Heimerdinger round out the core cast, with Ambessa Medarda and Warwick growing in importance in season two.

Are Vi and Jinx really sisters?

Yes. Vi is the older sister and Powder the younger. They were orphaned during an undercity uprising and raised by Vander. The series is the story of how a single terrible day split them up, and how Powder became Jinx while Vi spent years in prison.

Who voices Jinx and Vi in Arcane?

In the English version, Ella Purnell voices adult Jinx and Hailee Steinfeld voices Vi. Mia Sinclair Jenness voices young Powder in the childhood episodes.

Is Arcane finished?

Yes. Arcane told its story in two seasons: the first in November 2021 and the second, which concluded the story, in November 2024. Each season was released in three acts of three episodes. Riot has said it plans further animation set in Runeterra, but Arcane's own story of Piltover and Zaun is complete.

Do I need to play League of Legends to watch Arcane?

No. The show was written for people who have never played the game. Knowing League adds small rewards, such as recognising champions before they get their names, but every character is introduced from scratch.

Who is the villain of Arcane?

There isn't one simple villain. Silco is the main antagonist of season one, but the show makes his love for Jinx genuine. Season two shifts the threat to Ambessa Medarda's ambitions and to Viktor's dream of ending suffering by changing what people are. Most of the cast does real harm for reasons the show takes seriously.
