Hazbin Hotel is set in a Hell that is badly overcrowded. Once a year, Heaven sends an army of angelic exorcists down to cull the population. Charlie Morningstar, Hell's soft-hearted princess, thinks there's a better way: if sinners can be genuinely rehabilitated, they can be sent up instead. She turns a run-down building into a hotel for demons who want to change, and fills it with an unlikely staff.
The show began as a crowdfunded YouTube pilot in 2019 and became a full Prime Video series in January 2024, with a second season following in 2025. Most of its cast falls into four groups: the hotel staff and residents, the Overlords who rule Hell's districts, the royal family, and the angels of Heaven. This guide covers each group in turn.

The hotel staff and residents
The Hazbin Hotel itself is the heart of the show. Almost everyone who works or lives there arrives for selfish reasons and stays because, without meaning to, they start to care about each other. It's a found-family story wrapped in an afterlife comedy.
Charlie Morningstar
Princess of Hell · Hotel founder
Charlie is Lucifer's daughter and the series' relentlessly hopeful lead. Her conviction that anyone can be redeemed is exactly what Hell finds so laughable. The show takes that optimism seriously, though, and keeps asking what it costs her: her father's distance, Heaven's contempt, and the fear that she might be wrong. She deals with most problems by bursting into song.
- Voice
- Erika Henningsen
Vaggie
Hotel manager · Charlie's girlfriend
Vaggie is the practical one. She's sharp-tongued and protective, and she's always ready with a spear when Charlie's idealism meets reality. Season one reveals that she used to be one of Heaven's exorcists. She was cast out after sparing a sinner, and that secret changes how you read every scene she's in.
- Voice
- Stephanie Beatriz
Alastor
The Radio Demon · Overlord
Alastor is a smiling, static-voiced Overlord who turned up in Hell in the 1930s and quickly wiped out several established powers. He offers to help run the hotel "for the entertainment," which no one believes. He's charming, polite and plainly dangerous, and the show hints that he's bound by a deal of his own. Why he's really at the hotel is the show's biggest mystery.
- Voice
- Amir Talai
Angel Dust
The hotel's first resident
Angel Dust is a spider demon and adult-film star. He's the loudest, crudest person in any room, and it's mostly armour. He's trapped under a predatory contract with Valentino, and his slow, reluctant trust in Husk and Charlie gives the series its most affecting arc. His solo numbers are about the gap between the act he puts on and the person underneath.
- Voice
- Blake Roman
Husk
Bartender · Former Overlord
Husk is a grumpy winged cat demon who once ruled his own territory. He lost a soul-deal to Alastor and now pours drinks at the hotel bar. He plays the cynic, but he's the one who calls Angel Dust out on his self-destruction and then stands by him.
- Voice
- Keith David
Niffty
Housekeeper
Niffty is a tiny one-eyed demon with endless energy, an obsession with cleaning, and some alarming hobbies she mentions far too cheerfully. Like Husk, she came to the hotel through Alastor. She's mostly comic relief, but her total lack of fear makes her quietly unsettling.
- Voice
- Kimiko Glenn
Sir Pentious
Inventor · Reformed villain
Sir Pentious is a Victorian snake demon whose airship attacks on the hotel always go wrong. He ends up joining it after one defeat too many. His clumsy, sincere attempts to be good make him the series' emotional surprise. When he gives his life for his friends in the finale, he becomes the first sinner proven to reach Heaven.
- Voice
- Alex Brightman
Cherri Bomb
Angel Dust's best friend
Cherri Bomb is a one-eyed demolitions expert who treats turf wars as recreation. She's Angel's oldest friend and spends most of her time talking him into trouble. She's at her best in the battle scenes, where she shows real loyalty.
The Egg Bois
Sir Pentious's henchmen
These numbered, identical egg-shaped minions are fiercely devoted to their boss and complete failures at helping him. Their reaction to his ascension is a small, funny grace note in the finale.
Overlords and the Vees
Overlords are the most powerful sinners in Hell. They carve the city into territories, collect souls through deals, and treat the yearly extermination as just another market shock. The most dangerous of them are the Vees, three media moguls who control what Hell watches, wears and buys.
Vox
Overlord of media and technology
Vox has a television for a head and the ego of a tech CEO. He runs the screens, surveillance and broadcast networks that shape Hell's opinions. He and Alastor have an old, bitter rivalry: modern media against old-fashioned radio. It sits behind many of the Vees' moves against the hotel.
- Voice
- Christian Borle
Valentino
Overlord · Studio owner
Valentino is a moth demon who owns Hell's biggest adult-film studio, and Angel Dust's contract with it. The show presents him as a straightforward abuser, controlling and volatile, and never makes him charming in the way it does Alastor. That's deliberate.
- Voice
- Joel Perez
Velvette
Overlord of fashion and influence
Velvette is the youngest of the Vees: an influencer, designer and brand strategist who treats every crisis as content. She's dismissive of Vox and Valentino's fighting, and much more competent than her attitude suggests.
- Voice
- Lilli Cooper
Carmilla Carmine
Overlord · Arms dealer
Carmilla is a composed, elegant Overlord who runs weapons manufacturing in Hell. She's quietly worked out how to forge weapons from angelic steel, and she's one of the few Overlords who treats Charlie with real respect.
Rosie
Overlord of Cannibal Town
Rosie is a genteel, smiling Overlord who rules a district of cannibals with old-fashioned manners. She's one of Alastor's few real friends, and her community joins the fight against Heaven's exorcists.
Zestial
One of Hell's oldest Overlords
Zestial is an ancient, soft-spoken power who chairs the Overlord meetings. Even Alastor addresses him with care. He doesn't appear often, but every appearance reminds you how much older Hell's hierarchy is than its newest players.
Mimzy
Showgirl · Old acquaintance of Alastor
Mimzy is a flapper-era singer who arrives at the hotel running from trouble she caused herself. Her visit opens a small window into Alastor's past and his rules about who he does and doesn't protect.
The royal family
Hell's ruling family matters more than its Overlords on paper, but for most of the first season they're absent from day-to-day life in Hell. Getting them back into the picture is part of Charlie's story.
Lucifer Morningstar
King of Hell
Lucifer was the fallen angel who gave humanity free will and was thrown out of Heaven for it. Now he's a depressed, rubber-duck-collecting father who hasn't been around much. He's the most powerful being in Hell and emotionally out of his depth. His musical reconciliation with Charlie and his showdown with Adam form the backbone of the season one finale.
- Voice
- Jeremy Jordan
Lilith
Queen of Hell · Charlie's mother
Lilith is Adam's first wife and the reason Lucifer fell. She's missing for most of the story, and her absence shapes Charlie's sense of duty. The series suggests her story is much more complicated than the version Charlie grew up with.
Heaven and the exorcists
Hazbin Hotel's Heaven is bright, cheerful and bureaucratic, and that's what makes it chilling. Most angels don't know the exterminations happen. The few who do treat them as routine population control.
Adam
The first man · Leader of the exorcists
Adam is humanity's first soul, now a crude, guitar-shredding angel who leads the annual extermination and clearly enjoys it. He was Lilith's first husband and still holds a grudge. Season one's main villain, he's built to be loud, petty and easy to hate.
- Voice
- Alex Brightman
Lute
Adam's lieutenant
Lute is Adam's disciplined, zealous second-in-command. Her hatred of sinners is entirely sincere. She survives the finale grieving and furious, which makes her a more focused threat than Adam ever was.
- Voice
- Jessica Vosk
Emily
Seraphim
Emily is a cheerful young seraph who is horrified to learn about the exterminations. Charlie is pleading for something Emily thought she already believed in, and her empathy makes her Charlie's natural ally in Heaven.
- Voice
- Shoba Narayan
Sera
High Seraphim
Sera is Heaven's senior seraph and Emily's older sister. She secretly approved the exterminations because she believed they protected Heaven. She's not a cartoon villain. She's a tragic administrator, trying to manage a disaster she helped create.
- Voice
- Patina Miller
Saint Peter
Gatekeeper of Heaven
Saint Peter is a genial, easily flustered keeper of the gates. He's mostly comic relief, and a useful window into how little ordinary Heaven knows about what's done in its name.
Voice cast at a glance

What the characters are really about
Strip away the demons and the show is about whether people can change, and who gets to decide. Each main character answers that question differently:
- Charlie believes change is always possible. The story keeps testing whether that belief can survive contact with the people she's trying to save.
- Angel Dust wants to change but doesn't believe he deserves to. That's the hardest case for Charlie's theory, and the most moving one.
- Sir Pentious proves it's possible. Fittingly, he's the character nobody, including the audience, took seriously.
- Alastor has no interest in change, and he's the one keeping the hotel standing.
- Sera and Adam show the other side: a Heaven so sure of its own goodness that it never asked the question at all.
That pattern, a found family of damaged people pushing each other toward something better, puts Hazbin Hotel alongside shows like The Owl House and Steven Universe, despite its far rougher tone. For more on how these arcs work, see our guide to redemption arcs.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the main character of Hazbin Hotel?
Charlie Morningstar, the princess of Hell and daughter of Lucifer. She opens the Hazbin Hotel to show that sinners can be rehabilitated and reach Heaven, which would end Heaven's annual exterminations of Hell's population.
Who are the Vees?
The Vees are three Overlords who run Hell's media together. Vox controls television and technology, Valentino runs an adult film studio and holds Angel Dust's contract, and Velvette runs fashion and social media. They're the main villains on the Hell side of the story.
Why does Alastor help Charlie?
The show still hasn't fully answered this. Alastor says he's there for the entertainment, but he hints at a deal with a more powerful being that limits his freedom. Many fans suspect he is using the hotel to get out of that contract.
Does Sir Pentious go to Heaven?
Yes. Sir Pentious dies protecting his friends during the season one finale and wakes up in Heaven. He's the first proof that Charlie's redemption project actually works, which makes his ascension one of the most important moments in the series.
Is Hazbin Hotel connected to Helluva Boss?
Yes. Both shows are created by Vivienne Medrano and share the same version of Hell, but they follow different casts. You can watch either first; crossovers are limited to cameos and shared locations.
Is Hazbin Hotel for kids?
No. It's rated for mature audiences, with constant swearing, sexual content, drug use and graphic violence. The cartoon style and musical numbers can be misleading, so parents should read the rating before letting children watch.
