In the Clover Kingdom, magic is everything. Every person is born with mana, and at fifteen every young person receives a grimoire that shapes their magic for life. The kingdom's Magic Knights are its army and its celebrities, and the Wizard King who leads them is the most admired person in the land. Two orphans abandoned on the same night at a church in the poor village of Hage both want that job. Yuno is a prodigy. Asta has no magic at all.

When the grimoires are handed out, Yuno receives a legendary four-leaf clover grimoire and Asta receives nothing, until a battered five-leaf grimoire chooses him and gives him swords that cancel magic. Both join the Magic Knights, but in very different squads: Yuno joins the elite Golden Dawn, and Asta lands in the Black Bulls, the squad of misfits nobody else wanted. The cast is huge, so this guide sorts it by squad.

Asta and Yuno

The series is built on the rivalry between two boys raised as brothers. They push each other forward, and they're never quite sure which of them is ahead.

The Black Bulls

The Black Bulls finish last in the Magic Knights' rankings year after year. Their hideout is a magical building that rearranges itself, their members break things constantly, and their captain keeps threatening to kill them. They're also, as the story goes on, the most loyal and dangerous squad in the kingdom.

Noelle Silva

Water magic · Royal

Noelle is a princess of the royal Silva family, dumped on the Black Bulls because she can't control her enormous mana. She's proud, prickly and easily embarrassed, especially about her feelings for Asta. Her arc is about learning to aim her power and stepping out from under her siblings' contempt, and she grows into one of the strongest mages of her generation.

Voice
Kana Yuuki (JP), Jill Harris (EN)

Magna Swing

Fire magic

Magna is a commoner with a delinquent pompadour who appoints himself Asta's senior and drives him around on a broom. He's loud and hot-headed, with ordinary mana by Magic Knight standards, which makes his determination to keep up with monsters one of the series' best underdog stories.

Luck Voltia

Lightning magic

Luck always smiles and always wants to fight. He uses lightning magic to move at extreme speed, and early on he barely seems to care whether his allies get hurt. Behind the grin is a difficult past, and his friendship with Magna is one of the squad's best pairings.

Vanessa Enoteca

Thread magic · Witch

Vanessa is a cheerful, usually tipsy witch who fled the Witches' Forest and the queen who wanted to keep her caged. Her thread magic can bind enemies and repair allies, and she later awakens a power that can bend fate itself in her friends' favour, which makes her one of the squad's most important supports.

Finral Roulacase

Spatial magic

Finral is the squad's flirtatious, nervous transporter, opening portals that carry everyone in and out of trouble. He's the heir of a noble family who was passed over for his younger brother Langris, and he has to decide whether he wants that place back. He hates fighting, but no mission happens without him.

Gauche Adlai

Mirror magic

Gauche has one thing on his mind: his little sister Marie, whose photo he carries everywhere. His mirror magic can multiply attacks and create copies, and he's rude to nearly everyone else. Over time, especially through Grey, he learns there's room in his life for other people.

Grey

Transformation magic

Grey usually appears as a huge armoured figure, but that's a disguise. Underneath is a painfully shy young woman who changes her appearance because she can't stand to be looked at. Her transformation magic becomes much more powerful once she starts to accept herself.

Gordon Agrippa

Poison magic

Gordon looks like a cursed corpse and speaks in an unbroken mumble that nobody hears. All he wants is friends. His poison magic is genuinely effective, and the gag that his squadmates ignore him gets a sweet payoff.

Charmy Pappitson

Cotton magic

Charmy is a tiny, food-obsessed mage who makes cotton sheep that cook for her and fight for her. She has a crush on Yuno, who once saved her, and she's part dwarf, which gives her a second, very different kind of magic for serious fights.

Zora Ideale

Trap magic

Zora joins the squad partway through after spending years sabotaging what he saw as corrupt Magic Knights. He's sarcastic and contemptuous of nobles, and his trap magic rewards preparation over raw power. He respects Asta, though he'd rather die than say so.

Henry Legolant

Recombination magic

Henry is the squad's hidden member: a sickly young man who drains mana from anyone near him and has to keep his distance. His magic is what lets the Black Bulls' hideout move and reshape itself. The squad's acceptance of him is a quiet example of what makes them a found family.

Secre Swallowtail (Nero)

Sealing magic

For most of the series Nero is a small black bird who follows Asta around. She's actually a human mage who has been trapped in that form for centuries, and she holds key knowledge about the first Wizard King and the origin of Asta's grimoire.

Nacht Faceless

Vice-captain · Shadow magic

Nacht is the Black Bulls' rarely seen vice-captain, a stern man who travels through shadows and can merge with devils. He arrives in the Spade Kingdom arc to train Asta in using his devil's power. He's harsh about Yami's methods, though his reasons turn out to be personal.

The nine Magic Knight squads and captains

The Clover Kingdom's Magic Knights are divided into nine squads, each with a captain, and ranked each year by the stars they earn for their achievements. The captains below are those in place at the start of the story.

William Vangeance

Captain · Golden Dawn

William is the masked, soft-spoken captain of the top-ranked squad, who recruits talented outsiders like Yuno regardless of class. He's widely admired and seen as a future Wizard King. His mask hides a scar, and a secret much bigger than one.

Nozel Silva

Captain · Silver Eagles

Nozel is Noelle's eldest brother, cold and aristocratic, and he seems to hold her in contempt. He's one of the strongest captains, and his harshness turns out to hide a protective love shaped by their mother's death.

Fuegoleon Vermillion

Captain · Crimson Lion Kings

Fuegoleon is a royal who believes nobility means responsibility, and he's one of the first nobles to respect Asta. His fire magic summons the spirit Salamander. An attack in the capital takes him out of action for a long stretch, and his return is a major moment.

Mereoleona Vermillion

Acting captain · Crimson Lion Kings

Fuegoleon's older sister is a wild, ferocious fire mage who would rather train alone in the wilderness than run a squad. She takes over the Crimson Lions while her brother is out of action and drills Asta and others through brutal training. She's among the most powerful mages in the kingdom.

Charlotte Roselei

Captain · Blue Rose Knights

Charlotte leads an all-woman squad and is publicly cold toward men. Privately she's hopelessly in love with Yami, who has no idea. She's a powerful, disciplined fighter, and her tsundere routine is one of the series' most dependable jokes.

Jack the Ripper

Captain · Green Mantis

Jack is a lanky, bloodthirsty captain whose magic turns his limbs into blades that can cut through almost anything. He's openly delighted by violence, but fiercely protective of the kingdom.

Dorothy Unsworth

Captain · Coral Peacocks

Dorothy is almost always asleep, and that's her strength: her dream magic pulls opponents into a world where she controls everything. She's one of the strangest and most quietly dangerous captains.

Rill Boismortier

Captain · Aqua Deer

Rill is the youngest captain, a boyish artist whose painting magic brings whatever he draws to life. He's enthusiastic and a little immature, and desperate to prove he deserves his rank.

Kaiser Granvorka

Captain · Purple Orcas

Kaiser is the senior captain of the Purple Orcas, a veteran who appears mainly in the large battles involving every squad. He has far less screen time than the other captains.

Mimosa Vermillion

Golden Dawn · Plant magic

Mimosa is Noelle's gentle royal cousin and a healer with plant magic. She falls for Asta after he saves her, which makes her Noelle's cheerful, oblivious rival in love.

Klaus Lunettes

Golden Dawn · Steel magic

Klaus is a stiff, bespectacled noble who starts out disdainful of Yuno and Asta and comes to respect them both after their first dungeon mission together.

Langris Vaude

Golden Dawn vice-captain · Spatial magic

Langris is Finral's younger half-brother and his family's chosen heir. He's arrogant, jealous of Yuno and capable of real cruelty, and his rivalry with his brother is central to both of their arcs.

Julius Novachrono

The Wizard King · Time magic

Julius is the leader of all Magic Knights, a cheerful magic obsessive who wanders the kingdom in disguise to see new spells. His time magic makes him the strongest mage in the kingdom early on. He's the one who gave Yami and other outsiders their chance, and he's Asta's model of what a Wizard King should be.

Marx Francois

Wizard King's aide

Marx is Julius's long-suffering assistant, whose magic lets him communicate and share memories. He spends most of his appearances chasing the Wizard King back to work.

Villains and other kingdoms

Each major arc introduces a new threat to the Clover Kingdom, and each one complicates the kingdom's own history. The Clover Kingdom is surrounded by the Diamond, Heart and Spade Kingdoms, and each plays a role.

Licht

Leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun

Licht leads a terrorist group of mages with four-leaf grimoires, made up of people the kingdom cast aside. He's driven by grief and rage over a betrayal centuries in the past, and the truth about him rewrites the Clover Kingdom's founding story.

Vetto

Third Eye · Beast magic

Vetto is a member of the Eye's elite Third Eye and the first truly overwhelming opponent the Black Bulls face, during the Sea Temple arc. His contempt for hope makes him the perfect foil for Asta.

Mars

Diamond Kingdom mage

Mars is a soldier of the Diamond Kingdom, created by the state's experiments on its own children. He meets Asta and Yuno during their first dungeon mission as an enemy and returns later with a very different relationship to them.

The Dark Triad

Dante, Vanica and Zenon Zogratis

The three Zogratis siblings conquered the Spade Kingdom and rule it through power borrowed from devils. Dante uses body magic, Vanica uses blood magic and loves a fight, and Zenon uses bone magic. They're far stronger than the threats before them, and their invasion forces the whole Clover Kingdom to rethink how it fights.

Liebe

Asta's devil

Liebe is the devil living in Asta's five-leaf grimoire, a creature with no magic of his own who hates other devils for the way they treated him. His relationship with Asta moves from open hostility to something like brotherhood.

Loropechika

Queen of the Heart Kingdom

Loropechika is the gentle, cursed ruler of the Heart Kingdom, which becomes the Clover Kingdom's ally against the Spade Kingdom. Her kingdom trains Noelle and others in the advanced mana techniques the later arcs depend on.

Story arcs and where to start

  1. Grimoire and entrance exam Asta and Yuno get their grimoires and join their squads.
  2. Dungeon, capital attack and Sea Temple The Black Bulls come together and the Eye of the Midnight Sun appears.
  3. Royal Knights A tournament to form an elite squad, ending in the Eye's major attack.
  4. Elf Reincarnation The kingdom's buried history surfaces; the anime's strongest stretch for many fans.
  5. Spade Kingdom Raid The Dark Triad invade; the anime ends partway into this arc at episode 170.
  6. Final arc Manga only, now running in Jump GIGA.

The early episodes are slower and Asta's shouting divides first-time viewers, so it's worth giving the show until the Black Bulls are fully assembled before deciding. The Sword of the Wizard King film is a side story that can be watched any time after the main series. To continue past episode 170, pick up the manga from around chapter 270. Our manga vs anime guide covers what changes between the two.

What the characters are about

Black Clover is a classic shonen about effort beating talent, but its sharper point is about class. The Clover Kingdom is rigidly divided between royals, nobles and commoners, and most of the Black Bulls are there because one of those groups rejected them.

  • Asta is the clearest case: a commoner without magic, which in this world is like being born without a voice.
  • Noelle, Finral and Nozel show the pressure from the other side, nobles judged by their families.
  • Yami and Julius are the adults who chose to give outsiders a chance, and the series treats that choice as the start of real change.

If you like this mix of squads, rivalries and big power-ups, Naruto is the most obvious influence, with its own underdog chasing the top title, and Fairy Tail has the same rowdy-guild energy. My Hero Academia has a similar powerless-hero setup. For the Asta and Yuno dynamic in context, see our guide to iconic rivalries.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the Black Bulls in Black Clover?

The Black Bulls are the Clover Kingdom's most notorious Magic Knight squad, led by Captain Yami Sukehiro. Members include Asta, Noelle Silva, Magna Swing, Luck Voltia, Vanessa Enoteca, Finral Roulacase, Gauche Adlai, Grey, Gordon Agrippa, Charmy Pappitson, Zora Ideale, Henry Legolant, Secre Swallowtail and Vice-Captain Nacht Faceless.

Who are the nine Magic Knight captains?

At the start of the story the captains are Yami Sukehiro (Black Bulls), William Vangeance (Golden Dawn), Nozel Silva (Silver Eagles), Fuegoleon Vermillion (Crimson Lion Kings), Charlotte Roselei (Blue Rose Knights), Jack the Ripper (Green Mantis), Dorothy Unsworth (Coral Peacocks), Kaiser Granvorka (Purple Orcas) and Rill Boismortier (Aqua Deer).

Why does Asta have no magic?

Asta was born with no mana at all in a world where everyone has some. His five-leaf grimoire gives him anti-magic swords instead, powered by a devil living in the grimoire. Being able to cancel magic rather than use it is what makes him so valuable, and so distrusted.

Who is the strongest Black Clover character?

Wizard King Julius Novachrono is presented as the strongest active Magic Knight early on, thanks to his time magic. Later arcs raise the ceiling sharply: the Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom and the devils behind them outclass most captains, and Asta and Yuno grow to rival them. Lucius Zogratis is the most dangerous figure of the final arc.

Who voices Asta?

Asta is voiced by Gakuto Kajiwara in Japanese and by Dallas Reid in the English dub. His loud, hoarse performance is one of the most recognisable things about the anime.

Is Black Clover finished?

The anime ran for 170 episodes from 2017 to 2021, followed by the 2023 film Sword of the Wizard King. The manga moved from Weekly Shonen Jump to the quarterly Jump GIGA in 2023 for its final arc, which releases in less frequent batches; check the publisher for its current status.
