18 characters9 min readUpdated

Kaiju No. 8 is set in a Japan where giant monsters attack so often that kaiju disasters are reported like the weather. The Japan Defense Force fights them with powered suits and weapons built from the remains of kaiju it has killed, and cleanup crews come in afterward to deal with the mess. Kafka Hibino works on one of those crews. As a boy he promised his friend Mina Ashiro that they would join the Defense Force together. Mina kept her side of the deal and became a captain. Kafka gave up.

The story starts when the age limit for recruits is raised to 32, and Kafka, now 32, gets one last shot. Then a small kaiju gets inside his body and turns him into a kaiju himself. From then on he's trying to earn his place in the Defense Force while hiding that the Force's newest target is him. The cast sorts into recruits, officers, the leadership and the kaiju, which is how this guide is laid out.

Kafka and the recruits

Kafka joins the Third Division alongside a class of recruits who are mostly half his age. Watching a middle-aged man train next to teenage prodigies is a running joke at first, but the series uses it to say something real about late starts and second chances.

Reno Ichikawa

Recruit · Kafka's former coworker

Reno is an 18-year-old part-timer at Kafka's cleanup company who looks up to him despite all the evidence. He's the first person to learn Kafka's secret, and he decides to keep it. Calm, serious and quietly ambitious, he joins the Defense Force in the same intake and grows from a nervous rookie into one of its most promising young officers.

Kikoru Shinomiya

Recruit · Top of the intake

Kikoru is a teenage prodigy who swings a battle axe larger than she is and comes into the exams already performing at officer level. She's the daughter of Director-General Isao Shinomiya, and much of her pride is a fight for her father's approval. She starts out dismissive of Kafka, then becomes one of his fiercest defenders after he saves her life.

Iharu Furuhashi

Recruit

Iharu is a loud, competitive recruit who wears his insecurity on his sleeve. He resents being outshone by Kikoru and Reno and, at first, finds Kafka embarrassing. His slow climb from also-ran to reliable squadmate is one of the series' smaller, warmer subplots.

Haruichi Izumo

Recruit

Haruichi is a composed, friendly recruit from a well-connected family background who scores near the top of the intake. He's one of the steadier presences among the new officers and often plays peacemaker when Iharu's temper flares.

Aoi Kaguragi

Recruit

Aoi is a large, physically powerful recruit who previously served in the national Self-Defense Forces. He's disciplined, polite and slightly stiff, and his background makes him one of the most battle-ready members of the class.

Defense Force officers and leadership

The Japan Defense Force is organised into numbered divisions, each tied to a base and a region. Kafka is posted to the Third Division at Tachikawa, under Mina. The First Division, which handles the capital, is led by the Force's most famous fighter. Above them all sits the Director-General.

Soshiro Hoshina

Vice-captain · Third Division

Hoshina is a smiling, sharp-eyed swordsman who comes from a family of blade specialists. His aptitude for the Force's firearms is poor, so he made himself one of the best close-range fighters alive instead. He's the officer who first gives Kafka a chance and the first to suspect something is off about him. His mix of loyalty to Mina and wariness of Kafka makes him one of the most popular characters in the series.

Voice
Kengo Kawanishi (JP)

Gen Narumi

Captain · First Division

Narumi is widely considered the strongest active member of the Defense Force, and also a slob who spends his downtime gaming, ordering online and skipping paperwork. On the battlefield he becomes precise and frightening, using a Numbers weapon that lets him read an opponent's next move. He clashes with Kafka and the leadership in equal measure, but the series takes his skill completely seriously.

Isao Shinomiya

Director-General of the Defense Force

Isao is Kikoru's father and the man ultimately responsible for deciding what to do with Kaiju No. 8. He's severe, demanding and still a formidable fighter himself, wearing one of the most powerful Numbers weapons. His hard line on Kafka and his distance from his daughter both come from grief over his late wife.

Hikari Shinomiya

Former Second Division captain · Kikoru's mother

Hikari was a celebrated captain who died before the story begins. She appears in flashbacks, and her legacy shapes both Kikoru's drive and Isao's coldness. Much of Kikoru's arc is about living up to, and then out from under, her mother's example.

Konomi Okonogi

Operations officer · Third Division

Okonogi runs analysis and communications for the Third Division, reading kaiju data and relaying it to the field. She's the voice in the squad's ear during operations and a quietly important figure whenever the Force has to understand a new kind of threat.

How the Defense Force works

A few terms come up constantly, and knowing them makes the cast easier to follow:

  • Divisions are numbered units tied to bases. The story centres on the Third Division (Tachikawa) and the First Division, with others appearing during large-scale attacks.
  • Combat suits amplify the wearer's strength. A recruit's "release" percentage measures how much of the suit's power they can safely draw on, and it works like a ranking system between characters.
  • Fortitude is the scale used to measure a kaiju's threat level. Kafka's kaiju form registers so high that it immediately earns a number.
  • Numbered kaiju are the most dangerous kaiju ever recorded in Japan, each given a designation. Their remains are turned into Numbers weapons, which only a handful of officers can use.

The kaiju

Most kaiju in the series are natural disasters with teeth: huge, mindless and handled by the numbers. The ones that matter to the plot are the exceptions, kaiju that think.

Kaiju No. 8

Kafka's kaiju form

Kafka's transformed body is a lean, skull-faced humanoid with enough power to one-shot giant kaiju. At first he can barely control when it appears. Learning to use it deliberately, and to survive the Defense Force's response when it's discovered, drives much of his arc.

Kaiju No. 10

Battle-hungry kaiju

No. 10 is an intelligent kaiju that attacks the Tachikawa base for the sake of a good fight. Its personality survives its defeat in an unusual way, and its ongoing bickering with Hoshina becomes a highlight of the later story.

The small parasite kaiju

Origin of Kafka's power

The tiny winged kaiju that enters Kafka's body in the first chapter is barely shown, but its origin is one of the series' longest-running questions. What it is, and why it chose him, ties into the larger history of numbered kaiju.

Honju and yoju

Kaiju classifications

Many attacks involve a main kaiju (honju) and smaller spawn (yoju) that swarm around it. Recruits usually handle the spawn while officers take the main body, which is why early fights are so useful for showing off each recruit's strengths.

Historical numbered kaiju

Sources of the Numbers weapons

Kaiju No. 1 through No. 7 were among the worst disasters in Japan's history. Their remains now power the Force's strongest weapons, so they shape the story long after their deaths. Several characters' arcs are about learning to wield one.

Where to start

  1. Season 1 (2024) — Kafka's transformation, the entrance exam, life in the Third Division and the attack on Tachikawa base.
  2. Season 2 (2025) — The fallout from Kafka's secret, the First Division and the escalating threat from Kaiju No. 9.
  3. The manga — The full story through to its 2025 ending. If you want to continue past the anime, the manga is the place to do it.

Start with season one episode one; there's no prologue material you need. The series also put out a compilation film, but the TV seasons are the complete version. If you're comparing the formats, our manga vs anime guide explains what tends to change in adaptation.

What the characters are about

Kaiju No. 8 has big monster fights, but its centre is a smaller question: is it too late? Kafka is a man who stopped chasing his dream and gets dragged back toward it, and the cast around him is built to test that idea.

  • Late starts. Kafka is surrounded by teenagers who are faster and stronger than him, and he wins by using what his years of dead-end work taught him.
  • Inheritance. The Shinomiya family, the Hoshina family and the Numbers weapons are all about what one generation hands the next, and what that costs.
  • Being both. Kafka is the thing he's training to kill. The series keeps asking whether the Defense Force will judge him by what he is or by what he does.

If you like this mix of workplace comedy and monster action, Chainsaw Man covers similar ground with a much darker tone, and Jujutsu Kaisen has the same structure of recruits and ranked elite fighters. Attack on Titan is the obvious ancestor for a hero who turns into the monster, and Dandadan is a good next pick for weird creature fights. For who would win in a fight, see our power scaling guide.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the main character of Kaiju No. 8?

Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who cleans up kaiju corpses for a living. He has wanted to join the Japan Defense Force since childhood, and when a small kaiju forces its way into his body he gains the ability to turn into a powerful kaiju himself. The Defense Force designates that form Kaiju No. 8.

Who is the strongest character in Kaiju No. 8?

Among humans, Gen Narumi, captain of the First Division, is treated as the Defense Force's strongest active fighter for most of the story, with Director-General Isao Shinomiya also a contender. Kafka in full kaiju form and Kaiju No. 9 are the most dangerous beings overall, and the story keeps escalating what both can do.

Who is Kaiju No. 9?

Kaiju No. 9 is the main antagonist: an intelligent kaiju that can speak, plan, take on human appearance and absorb the abilities of what it consumes. Where most kaiju are disasters, No. 9 behaves like a strategist, and its schemes drive the series' biggest battles.

Is Mina Ashiro Kafka's love interest?

Mina and Kafka are childhood friends who promised to fight kaiju together, and their bond is the emotional core of the story. The series frames it more as a promise and a rivalry of ambition than a romance, though there is clear affection on both sides.

Who voices Kafka Hibino?

In Japanese, Kafka is voiced by Masaya Fukunishi. The anime also has an English dub, available on Crunchyroll.

Is the Kaiju No. 8 manga finished?

Yes. The manga ran on the Shonen Jump+ app from 2020 and reached its final chapter in 2025. The anime, produced by Production I.G, has aired two seasons, in 2024 and 2025.
