Hunter x Hunter Characters

Who's who in Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter x Hunter: the four leads, the Phantom Troupe, the Zoldyck assassins, the Chimera Ants and the Hunters around them, with each character's Nen type and the arc where they matter most.

Hunter x Hunter is about a 12-year-old named Gon who leaves his island home to become a Hunter, a licensed elite who tracks treasure, monsters, criminals and lost cities, because his absent father Ging is one. The friends Gon makes on the way, and the people who try to kill them, turn it into one of the most character-driven shonen series ever written.

The cast is huge and changes from arc to arc, so this guide is organised the way the story is: the main four first, then the Hunters and mentors, the Phantom Troupe, the Zoldyck family, and the Chimera Ants. A table of Nen types, the series' power system, follows, then a full A–Z list.

The main four

Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio meet during the Hunter Exam and spend the rest of the series pulling apart and coming back together. Each one wants something different from being a Hunter, and that difference drives the plot.

Kurapika

Last of the Kurta clan · Conjurer / Specialist

Kurapika's clan was wiped out by the Phantom Troupe for their Scarlet Eyes, which turn red with emotion and are sold as collector's items. He becomes a Hunter for two reasons: to kill the Troupe and to recover every pair of his people's eyes. His strongest chain is bound by a vow: it only works on members of the Troupe, and using it on anyone else would kill him. He's calm, formal and quietly self-destructive, and his story keeps asking how much of himself revenge will cost.

Miyuki Sawashiro

Leorio Paradinight

Aspiring doctor · Emitter

Leorio opens the series claiming he wants a Hunter licence for the money. The truth is that a friend died of an illness that could have been cured, and he wants to be a doctor who treats the poor for free. He's loud, quick to anger and the most ordinary of the four, which makes him their emotional anchor. In the Election arc he punches Ging in front of the assembled Hunters, the clip spreads, and he suddenly finds himself a serious candidate for chairman.

Keiji Fujiwara

Hunters, mentors and wild cards

The adults around Gon and Killua teach them Nen, test them, and occasionally try to kill them. Hisoka belongs in his own category, but he enters the story here.

Isaac Netero

Chairman of the Hunter Association · Enhancer

Netero is an elderly martial artist who spent his youth throwing tens of thousands of prayer punches until his speed outran sound. He runs the Hunter Association with a prankster's sense of humour, and he toys with Gon and Killua during the exam. When the Chimera Ants arrive he goes to face the King personally, which leads to one of the series' defining fights.

Ging Freecss

Gon's father · Ruins Hunter

Ging is a ruins Hunter, one of the best Nen users alive, and a terrible father. He left Gon with relatives to keep doing the work he loved, and he helped build the Greed Island game partly as a test for his son. When the two finally meet in the Election arc, the scene is deliberately anticlimactic and honest about who Ging is.

Kite

Ging's student · Conjurer

Kite is the young Hunter who once saved Gon in the forest and points him toward his father. His Crazy Slot ability conjures a random weapon he can't choose. Kite leads the first expedition against the Chimera Ants, and what happens to him becomes the reason for Gon's most dangerous decisions.

Biscuit Krueger

Double-star Stone Hunter · Transmuter

Bisky looks like a sweet little girl and is in fact a fifty-something veteran with a hulking true form. She trains Gon and Killua through the Greed Island arc, and her lessons on aura control give them the foundations they rely on for the rest of the series. She's vain, blunt and an excellent teacher.

Wing

Nen teacher · Enhancer

Wing is the scruffy, kind instructor who first teaches Gon and Killua Nen at Heavens Arena. He also trains Zushi. His insistence on doing things properly, and his shock at how fast the boys learn, establishes how unusual they are.

Knuckle Bine

Hunter · Morel's student

Knuckle is a hot-tempered, soft-hearted fighter who joins Morel and Shoot against the Ants. His ability puts a debt on the enemy's aura that grows over time. He's one of the clearest examples of the series' habit of turning an apparent thug into someone decent.

Senritsu

Musician · Kurapika's ally

Senritsu is a gentle flute player who can hear people's heartbeats and moods. She works alongside Kurapika in the Nostrade family's guard and becomes one of the few people he lets close. She's a small character with a big effect on how we read him.

Tonpa

The rookie crusher

Tonpa has taken the Hunter Exam over thirty times with no intention of passing. He just enjoys sabotaging newcomers. He's a small, petty villain, and he sets the exam's tone perfectly.

Pariston Hill

Vice-chairman · Zodiac

Pariston is a smiling, impossibly polite vice-chairman who loves being disliked. He treats the election to replace Netero as a game, mostly for the pleasure of annoying everyone, and he plays it better than anyone else.

The Phantom Troupe (Genei Ryodan)

The Phantom Troupe, also called the Spiders, are thirteen thieves from Meteor City, a lawless dump with no official residents. Each member has a spider tattoo with a number. They're the villains of the Yorknew City arc, but Togashi writes them with real loyalty toward each other, which makes Kurapika's war on them painful to watch.

Uvogin

Enhancer

Uvogin is the Troupe's strongest brawler, a giant who shrugs off rocket launchers. His fight with Kurapika is the first real test of Kurapika's chains and the moment the arc turns serious. His death hits the Troupe hard.

Nobunaga Hazama

Swordsman · Enhancer

Nobunaga is a samurai-style swordsman and Uvogin's closest friend. He takes a liking to Gon after capturing him, and offers him a place in the Troupe. His grief for Uvogin is one of the clearest signs that the Spiders are more than a gang.

Feitan Portor

Interrogator · Transmuter

Feitan is small, fast and cruel. He handles the Troupe's torture and his ability turns the damage he takes into a burst of heat. He's one of the most dangerous members in a straight fight.

Machi Komacine

Transmuter

Machi uses Nen threads to stitch wounds and severed limbs back together, and to tie up enemies. She's blunt, intuitive and one of the founding members. Hisoka's attention unnerves her more than any enemy.

Phinks Magcub

Enhancer

Phinks is a hot-headed fighter whose punches get stronger the more times he winds up his arm. He becomes more central in the Chimera Ant and Succession War arcs, often paired with Feitan.

Shalnark

Manipulator

Shalnark is the Troupe's friendly-faced tech and information specialist. He controls people with antennas plugged into their bodies through his phone. He's also one of the members Hisoka hunts after his fight with Chrollo.

Franklin Bordeau

Emitter

Franklin fires Nen bullets from his fingertips like machine guns. He's the giant, patient voice of reason who often calms the others down, and he takes part in the Troupe's massacre at the Yorknew auction.

Shizuku Murasaki

Conjurer

Shizuku conjures a vacuum cleaner called Blinky that can suck up anything that isn't alive. She's spacy and forgets things she considers unimportant, including people.

Pakunoda

Specialist

Pakunoda reads memories by touch, and she can fire them into others with a Nen gun. Caught between Kurapika's conditions and her loyalty to her friends, she makes the arc's most selfless choice.

Kortopi

Conjurer

Kortopi is a small, hair-covered member who can make temporary copies of any object he touches, which the Troupe uses to fake the auction loot.

Bonolenov Ndongo

Warrior of the Gyudondond

Bonolenov is a bandaged fighter whose body is pierced with holes; he fights by making music as he moves. He gets little screen time.

Kalluto Zoldyck

Hisoka's replacement · Manipulator

Killua's youngest sibling joins the Troupe to bring his brother home and fights with paper charged with Nen.

The Zoldyck family

The Zoldycks live behind a gate on Kukuroo Mountain that most visitors can't even push open. Every child is raised as an assassin, and the family treats this as a business like any other. Killua's visit home in the early arcs is half horror and half family comedy.

Illumi Zoldyck

Eldest son · Manipulator

Illumi controls people with Nen needles and, it turns out, has controlled Killua for years with one buried in his head. He's flat, polite and convinced that he loves his brother. He's the closest thing the early series has to a horror villain, and his partnership with Hisoka later on is deeply uncomfortable.

Silva Zoldyck

Head of the family

Silva is Killua's father, a huge silver-haired assassin who, unlike his wife, accepts that Killua must find his own path. He fights Chrollo alongside his father Zeno, and their fight is a showcase of professional killers at work.

Zeno Zoldyck

Grandfather · Transmuter

Zeno is a calm old professional whose aura takes the shape of dragons. He fights Chrollo for money, then carries Netero to the Chimera Ant King. He's one of the few characters who treats killing as plain work.

Kikyo Zoldyck

Mother

Kikyo wears a visor and a ballgown and screeches with pride when Killua stabs his brother. She's the family at its most grotesque and most comic.

Alluka Zoldyck

Killua's younger sibling

Alluka is kept locked away because of the being called Nanika, who can grant almost any wish once certain requests are met. Killua's love for Alluka, and his fight to treat Nanika as family rather than a weapon, is the emotional core of the Election arc.

Milluki Zoldyck

Second son

Milluki is the family's resentful computer expert and weapons collector, and the one Killua stabbed on his way out.

Maha Zoldyck

Great-grandfather

The family's oldest member, mentioned far more often than he's seen.

Gotoh and Canary

Butlers

Gotoh, the head butler, and Canary, a young trainee guard, both quietly root for Killua's freedom.

The Chimera Ants

The Chimera Ant arc is the longest and darkest stretch of the series. A giant queen ant washes ashore and starts eating humans, giving birth to soldiers that inherit human traits. Her son, the King, is born to rule the world. Over the arc, the monsters become more human and the humans become more monstrous.

Komugi

Gungi world champion

Komugi is a frail, clumsy girl from a poor family whose only gift is a board game, and she's a genius at it. She treats the King with simple decency, and their games change him more than any fight.

Neferpitou

Royal Guard · Specialist

Pitou is cat-like and curious, with an aura so vast that its range is felt far away. It can heal, and it can puppet the dead. Its encounter with Kite changes Gon's path, and its last confrontation with Gon is one of the series' most shocking scenes.

Shaiapouf

Royal Guard

Pouf is a butterfly-winged aesthete who worships the King as a perfect being. He becomes jealous and frightened as he watches Komugi change Meruem, and he plots to stop it.

Menthuthuyoupi

Royal Guard · Transmuter

Youpi is a mass of muscle and rage who can reshape his body into weapons. He's the most direct of the guards, and over his fight with Morel and Knuckle he grows strangely thoughtful.

Ikalgo

Squad leader turned ally

Ikalgo is an octopus Ant who remembers enough of his human self to choose friendship with Killua. He's a small, warm character in a very grim arc.

Meleoron

Squad leader turned ally

Meleoron is a chameleon Ant who can turn invisible while he holds his breath. He was never loyal to the King, and he defects to the Hunters, where his invisibility becomes essential to the palace invasion.

Colt

Squad leader

Colt is a bird Ant who stays devoted to the dying Queen and begs the Hunters to save her. His loyalty is the first sign that Ants can love.

Nen types

Nen is the life-energy every Hunter learns to control. Every person is born with one of six types, tested by putting a leaf on a glass of water and focusing aura on it. You can learn abilities outside your type, but they get weaker the further they are from it on the chart. Abilities also get stronger when the user binds them with vows and limits, which is why so many characters' powers come with strange rules.

Story arcs and who leads them

The cast shifts a lot between arcs, so knowing the order helps. The 2011 Madhouse anime (148 episodes) covers everything through the Election arc.

  1. Hunter Exam — Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio meet. Hisoka, Netero and Illumi are introduced.
  2. Zoldyck Family — Gon, Kurapika and Leorio climb Kukuroo Mountain to bring Killua back.
  3. Heavens Arena — Gon and Killua learn Nen from Wing and get their first real fight with Hisoka.
  4. Yorknew City — Kurapika's war on the Phantom Troupe at the world's largest underground auction.
  5. Greed Island — a deadly video game made by Ging; Biscuit trains the boys.
  6. Chimera Ant — the Ants, the King and the Royal Guard. The longest, darkest arc.
  7. Election — the race to replace Netero, Gon's recovery, Alluka, and Gon meeting Ging.
  8. Dark Continent Expedition / Succession War — manga only. Kurapika guards a prince on a ship full of royal heirs trying to kill each other.

If you're deciding between the 1999 and 2011 adaptations, start with 2011: it's complete through the Election arc and closer to the manga. Our manga vs anime guide explains the general trade-offs, and the watch order guide covers how to handle series with multiple adaptations.

What makes the cast work

Most shonen heroes get purer as they get stronger. Hunter x Hunter does the opposite. Gon's goodness is real, but it's the goodness of a child who hasn't been tested, and when he is tested, the series shows what that innocence can turn into. Killua starts as a killer and becomes the most caring person in the story. Kurapika gets everything he wanted and is hollowed out by it.

The villains get the same attention. The Phantom Troupe mourn their dead. The Chimera Ant King learns empathy from a board game. Togashi rarely tells you who to root for, which is why the series sits comfortably beside Fullmetal Alchemist and Jujutsu Kaisen, whose author has openly cited it as an influence. Gon and Killua's friendship also belongs on any list of iconic anime pairings, and the Nen system is a favourite topic for power scaling debates. Frequently asked questions

Who are the main characters in Hunter x Hunter?

The story follows four friends who meet during the Hunter Exam: Gon Freecss, a boy looking for his absent father; Killua Zoldyck, the runaway heir of an assassin family; Kurapika, the last survivor of the Kurta clan; and Leorio Paradinight, who wants to become a doctor. Gon and Killua carry most arcs together, while Kurapika leads the Yorknew City arc and the current Succession War.

Who are the 13 members of the Phantom Troupe?

The original lineup is Chrollo Lucilfer (the leader), Nobunaga, Feitan, Machi, Phinks, Shalnark, Franklin, Shizuku, Pakunoda, Bonolenov, Uvogin, Kortopi and Hisoka. Hisoka only joined to get a private fight with Chrollo. After he leaves, Kalluto Zoldyck takes his place.

Who is the strongest character in Hunter x Hunter?

Meruem, the Chimera Ant King, is the strongest character the series has shown. Isaac Netero, chairman of the Hunter Association, is generally considered the strongest human seen fighting at full strength. Netero himself names Ging Freecss as one of the five best Nen users in the world, and Chrollo, Zeno and Silva Zoldyck are usually ranked near the top.

What Nen type is Killua, and what is Gon's?

Gon is an Enhancer, the type that strengthens the body and objects directly. Killua is a Transmuter: he changes his aura into electricity, which powers his Godspeed technique. Kurapika is a Conjurer who becomes a Specialist when his Scarlet Eyes are active, and Leorio is an Emitter.

How old are Gon and Killua?

Both are 12 years old when the story begins at the Hunter Exam. Kurapika is 17 and Leorio is 19, which surprises a lot of first-time viewers.

Is Hunter x Hunter finished?

No. The manga has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1998, with long breaks because of the author's health, and the Dark Continent Expedition arc is unfinished. The 2011 anime adapts the story through the end of the Election arc, so manga chapters after that have not been animated.
