Bungo Stray Dogs is set in a stylised Yokohama where some people are born with supernatural "abilities." The city is held in balance by three powers: the government's Special Division for Unusual Powers rules by day, the Port Mafia rules by night, and in the dusk between them sits the Armed Detective Agency, a private firm of ability users who take the cases police can't handle.
The twist is in the names. Nearly every character is named after a real writer, and each ability is named after one of that writer's works. Osamu Dazai, author of No Longer Human, becomes a detective whose ability is called No Longer Human. You don't need to know any of the books to follow the plot, but if you do, the series is full of small jokes and nods. This guide covers the four main factions, then lists every character's ability and namesake in one table.

The Armed Detective Agency
The Agency is a small office above a café, founded by a swordsman who wanted ability users to have somewhere honest to work. Its members bicker like a family and take on everything from missing persons to city-wide terrorism. Atsushi joins in the first episode, which makes the Agency the audience's way into the story.
Atsushi Nakajima
Protagonist · Beast Beneath the Moonlight
Atsushi is a teenage orphan thrown out of a cruel orphanage, starving and convinced he is worthless. His ability turns him, fully or partly, into a white tiger with fast healing, which is why the orphanage was afraid of him and why the Port Mafia puts a bounty on his head. His arc is about learning that he's allowed to live and choosing to protect people because of what was done to him, not in spite of it.

- Yuto Uemura (JP), Max Mittelman (EN)
Osamu Dazai
Detective · No Longer Human
Dazai is a cheerful, lazy detective who is constantly attempting suicide in silly ways and charming everyone he meets. Behind the clowning he is the cleverest person in most rooms and a former Port Mafia executive with a dark past. His ability cancels any ability he touches. Most of the series' long-game plans turn out to be his, and his choice to leave the Mafia is the emotional backbone of the story.
- Voice
- Mamoru Miyano (JP), Kaiji Tang (EN)
Doppo Kunikida
Detective · The Matchless Poet
Kunikida is Dazai's long-suffering partner, a man who plans his life down to the minute in a notebook titled "Ideals." His ability turns anything he writes on a page into a real object, as long as it is no bigger than the notebook. He's strict and idealistic, and the series breaks his heart more than once to show what those ideals cost.
- Voice
- Yoshimasa Hosoya (JP)
Ranpo Edogawa
Detective · Super Deduction
Ranpo is the Agency's star detective, childish and spoiled, who solves cases the moment he puts on his glasses. He believes this is an ability. It isn't: he is simply a genius, and the president lets him keep believing otherwise. He is the only member who can read Dazai's plans almost as fast as Dazai makes them.
Yukichi Fukuzawa
President · All Men Are Equal
Fukuzawa is the Agency's founder, a quiet, stern swordsman. His ability lets him regulate the abilities of his subordinates so they can control them, which is how new members with dangerous powers learn to use them safely. His old rivalry with the Port Mafia's boss shapes much of the city's politics.
Akiko Yosano
Doctor · Thou Shalt Not Die
Yosano is the Agency's doctor. Her ability fully heals anyone near death, which in practice means she sometimes has to injure patients badly before she can save them. She's cheerful about this in a way that alarms new members, and her backstory as a military medic gives her one of the series' darkest pasts.
Kyouka Izumi
Former assassin · Demon Snow
Kyouka is a fourteen-year-old who was forced to kill for the Port Mafia. Her ability, a sword-wielding spirit, originally obeyed whoever spoke to it through her phone. Atsushi rescues her, and her slow path into the Agency, and to controlling her ability herself, mirrors his own.
Junichiro Tanizaki
Detective · Light Snow
Tanizaki is a mild-mannered member whose ability creates illusions, letting him hide himself or others. He is meek until his sister is threatened, at which point he becomes frightening. His odd closeness with Naomi is a running joke.
Naomi Tanizaki
Agency clerk
Naomi is Junichiro's sister, or so she says, and works in the Agency office. She has no ability. Her clingy affection for her brother is played for comedy.
Kenji Miyazawa
Detective · Undefeated by the Rain
Kenji is a sunny farm boy from the countryside who gains enormous strength when he's hungry. He is friendly with everyone and lifts cars without noticing. He's the Agency's gentlest member and its most unexpected muscle.
The Port Mafia
The Port Mafia controls Yokohama's harbour and its underworld. It's ruthless but organised, and it values loyalty above everything. Several of the most popular characters in the series belong to it, and its history with Dazai means it is never simply the enemy.
Ryunosuke Akutagawa
Mafia enforcer · Rashomon
Akutagawa is a coughing, black-coated killer whose ability turns his coat into a devouring beast that can also form a defensive barrier. He was trained, harshly, by Dazai, and is consumed by the need to earn his former mentor's approval. His rivalry with Atsushi is the series' central one: two orphans who hate each other on sight and keep being forced to fight side by side.
- Voice
- Kensho Ono (JP)
Chuuya Nakahara
Executive · For the Tainted Sorrow
Chuuya is a short-tempered, stylish executive who controls gravity on anything he touches. Pushed further, his ability unleashes a destructive state he can't switch off by himself. He was Dazai's partner as Double Black and still loathes him. He's loyal to the Mafia to the bone, and one of the most popular characters in the series.
- Voice
- Kisho Taniyama (JP)
Ougai Mori
Boss · Vita Sexualis
Mori is the Port Mafia's boss, a former doctor who makes every decision by calculating what is best for the organisation. His ability takes the form of Elise, a girl in a red dress whom he dotes on. He's charming, logical and very hard to read.
Kouyou Ozaki
Executive · Golden Demon
Kouyou is an elegant executive whose ability summons a sword-wielding spirit similar to Kyouka's. She wants Kyouka back in the Mafia and sees her own past in her. She's a fearsome fighter with a protective streak.
Ichiyo Higuchi
Akutagawa's subordinate
Higuchi leads Akutagawa's squad and is devoted to him, though he barely notices. She fights with guns rather than an ability. She's a capable officer who gets more respect from the audience than from her boss.
Ryuro Hirotsu
Black Lizard leader · Falling Camellia
Hirotsu is a calm, older gentleman who commands the Black Lizard, the Mafia's combat unit. His ability repels anything he touches with great force. He's a veteran who treats violence as routine work.
Gin Akutagawa
Black Lizard assassin
Gin is Ryunosuke's younger sister, a silent, masked assassin. Her identity is a running surprise early on. She cares for her brother more than she shows.
Kyusaku Yumeno
Q · Dogra Magra
Kyusaku, called Q, is a child whose ability curses anyone who hurts him into hallucinating and attacking those around them. The Mafia keeps him locked away because he's too dangerous to use. He's one of the most tragic figures in the cast.
Sakunosuke Oda
Low-ranking member · Lapse
Oda is a Mafia member who refuses to kill and looks after orphans, and Dazai's closest friend in his Mafia years. His ability lets him see a few seconds into the future. His story, told in the Dark Era arc, explains why Dazai left the Mafia.
Ango Sakaguchi
Government agent · Discourse on Decadence
Ango was the third member of Dazai and Oda's drinking trio, and secretly a government spy. His ability reads the memories stored in objects. He now works for the Special Division and is the Agency's main contact with the state.
The Guild
The Guild is an organisation of wealthy American ability users who arrive in Yokohama to acquire a permit that lets an organisation operate with abilities. Their war with both the Agency and the Mafia drives the second season. Most of them turn out to be more sympathetic than they first seem.
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Leader · The Great Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald is a billionaire whose ability grows his strength the more money he spends. He's arrogant, but driven by grief for his daughter and devotion to his wife.
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Anne of Abyssal Red
Lucy is a prickly young orphan whose ability traps people in a creepy room guarded by a giant doll. After the war she ends up working at the café beneath the Agency.
Edgar Allan Poe
Black Cat in the Rue Morgue
Poe is a shy mystery writer obsessed with beating Ranpo. His ability traps people inside his novels until they solve the case. His raccoon Karl goes everywhere with him.
Herman Melville
Moby Dick
Melville is an old member whose ability is a giant flying white whale that serves as the Guild's fortress. He's a weary veteran rather than a zealot.
H. P. Lovecraft
Great Old Ones
Lovecraft is a sleepy, apathetic man whose body is something far stranger than human. Ordinary attacks barely affect him.
John Steinbeck
The Grapes of Wrath
Steinbeck is a farm boy from a large family who can graft plants onto himself and others. He works for the Guild to support his siblings.
Mark Twain
Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer
Twain is a laid-back sniper whose ability creates two companions that help him shoot from a distance.
Louisa May Alcott
Little Women
Louisa is the Guild's nervous strategist, whose ability lets her plan in a pocket of stopped time inside her mind.
Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Scarlet Letter
Hawthorne is a devout priest who turns his own blood into weapons, and a dangerous opponent for the Mafia.
Margaret Mitchell
Gone with the Wind
Mitchell is an aristocrat who joined the Guild to restore her family's fortune. She fights alongside Hawthorne.
The Decay of Angels and other enemies
After the Guild war, the main threat becomes Fyodor Dostoevsky, first through a group called the Rats in the House of the Dead and then through the Decay of Angels, a small terrorist group that frames the Agency for murder in seasons four and five.
Fyodor Dostoevsky
Main antagonist · Crime and Punishment
Fyodor is a soft-spoken Russian genius who believes ability users are a sin that must be wiped out. He is Dazai's intellectual equal and works almost entirely through other people, so his plans unfold several moves ahead. His ability was hidden for a long time, and its nature is one of the later reveals.
- Voice
- Akira Ishida (JP)
Nikolai Gogol
Clown · The Overcoat
Gogol is a theatrical, unpredictable member who can open portals through his cloak and reach or move through space. He's obsessed with being truly free, even of his own feelings, and his loyalty to Fyodor is never quite stable.
Sigma
Sky Casino manager
Sigma runs a casino floating in the sky and has no memory of a past. His ability swaps information with anyone who touches him. He's one of the few characters not named after a real writer, which ties into his story.
Bram Stoker
Dracula
Bram is a centuries-old vampire whose ability turns people into his thralls. He's used as a weapon in the fifth season's vampire outbreak, and he's far more weary than evil.
Fukuchi Ouchi
Hunting Dogs captain · Mirror Lion
Fukuchi is a national war hero and the commander of the Hunting Dogs, the government's elite unit. He's also Fukuzawa's oldest friend, and their history becomes very important in the fifth season.
Tetchou Suehiro
Hunting Dogs swordsman · Plum Blossoms in Snow
Tetchou is a deadpan swordsman whose blades extend wherever he wants them to cut. He's honest to a fault and slowly comes to doubt his orders.
Teruko Okura
Hunting Dogs vice-captain · Gasp of the Soul
Teruko is a hot-tempered vice-captain who can change her body's age, appearing as a child or an adult. She is fiercely devoted to Fukuchi.
Saigiku Jouno
Hunting Dogs member · Priceless Tears
Jouno is a blind, sadistic interrogator whose ability makes his senses extraordinarily sharp. He enjoys his work more than he should.
Abilities and the real authors behind them

Story arcs and where to start
- Season 1 (2016) Atsushi joins the Agency, meets Kyouka, and the Port Mafia comes after the bounty on his head.
- Season 2 (2016) Dazai's Mafia past with Oda and Ango, then the war with the Guild.
- Dead Apple (2018) A standalone film in which abilities are separated from their users across a fog-covered Yokohama.
- Season 3 (2019) The Guild's aftermath, the Rats in the House of the Dead, and fifteen-year-old Dazai and Chuuya's first case together.
- Seasons 4 and 5 (2023) The Decay of Angels frames the Agency, the Hunting Dogs hunt them, and a vampire outbreak spreads through the city.
Start with season one. The first few episodes are lighter and more comic than what follows, so give it until the Port Mafia properly arrives before deciding. The manga is still running, so the anime has caught up with most but not all of the published story; our watch order guide explains how films and spin-offs usually fit around a main series.
What the characters are about
The question at the centre of Bungo Stray Dogs is whether people who've been told they're worthless can choose to be good. Atsushi was told it by the orphanage, Akutagawa by the slums and by Dazai, Kyouka by the Mafia. The series doesn't pretend that choice is easy, and it lets the villains have reasons. A few patterns stand out:
- Partnerships drive the action. Dazai and Chuuya, Atsushi and Akutagawa, Dazai and Oda: the series keeps pairing characters who need each other more than they admit. That makes it a strong entry in our iconic rivalries guide.
- Day, night and dusk aren't just factions. They're three answers to how a city should be kept safe, and the best arcs force them to cooperate.
- Literature as a costume. The writers' real lives often leak into the characters. The real Dazai's troubled life explains the joke behind the character's suicide attempts, and the real Chūya Nakahara and Dazai were known for not getting along.
If you enjoy a cast of quirky ability users with a slow-burning emotional core, Mob Psycho 100 and Jujutsu Kaisen are good next stops.

Frequently asked questions
Who is the main character of Bungo Stray Dogs?
Atsushi Nakajima, an orphan who can turn into a white tiger, is the protagonist. Osamu Dazai is the co-lead in practice, and many arcs are as much about him as about Atsushi.
Are Bungo Stray Dogs characters based on real people?
Yes, in name. Almost every character is named after a real writer, mostly Japanese authors from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s, plus Western writers in the Guild and Russian and European writers in the Decay of Angels. Each ability is named after one of that writer's works. The personalities are invented, though some borrow details from the authors' lives.
What is Dazai's ability?
Dazai's ability, No Longer Human, cancels any other ability he touches. It's named after Osamu Dazai's best-known novel. It makes him immune to most attacks, and it's also the only thing that can stop Chuuya's most destructive power.
What is Soukoku?
Soukoku, or "Double Black," is the fan and in-story name for Dazai and Chuuya's partnership in the Port Mafia. Chuuya's gravity ability can be pushed to a devastating form, and Dazai is the one person who can switch it off. The term is also used for the newer partnership of Atsushi and Akutagawa, sometimes called "New Double Black."
Who is the strongest character in Bungo Stray Dogs?
There's no single answer, because abilities counter each other. Chuuya Nakahara is usually named the strongest fighter in raw destructive power, Fukuchi Ouchi is presented as one of the strongest swordsmen alive, and Fyodor Dostoevsky and Dazai are the strongest minds. See our power scaling guide for how fans argue this.
In what order should I watch Bungo Stray Dogs?
Watch seasons one and two, then the film Dead Apple, then seasons three, four and five. The chibi comedy Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! can be watched any time as a side dish.
