JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Characters

Who's who in Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Part by Part. Each section covers that Part's JoJo, their allies and the villain they face, with the Stand each fighter uses, a voice-cast table and an A–Z list of names.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is not one story but a family saga told in Parts. Each Part has a new protagonist from the Joestar bloodline, a new setting and a new villain, and the cast resets almost completely each time. The first six Parts follow one family through the twentieth century, from Victorian England to a Florida prison in 2011. Parts 7 onward restart in an alternate universe, reusing familiar names and faces in new roles.

Two power systems carry the series. In Parts 1 and 2, heroes fight vampires and ancient beings with Hamon (the Ripple), a breathing technique that channels sunlight energy. From Part 3 on, nearly every fighter has a Stand: a ghostly projection of their spirit with one specific, often bizarre ability. Because of that, JoJo fights are less about raw strength and more about puzzles. This guide goes Part by Part and lists each fighter's Stand alongside their role.

Part 1: Phantom Blood

Victorian England. A wealthy gentleman adopts the son of the man he thinks saved his life, and that boy, Dio Brando, sets out to steal the Joestar fortune. When Dio uses an Aztec stone mask to become a vampire, Jonathan learns Hamon to stop him. It's the shortest and most old-fashioned Part, but everything later grows out of it.

Will A. Zeppeli

Hamon master · Jonathan's mentor

Baron Zeppeli is an Italian adventurer in a top hat who has spent his life preparing to fight the stone mask's power. He teaches Jonathan the Ripple in a matter of days and treats him like a son. His line continues through Caesar in Part 2 and, in another universe, Gyro in Part 7.

Voice
Keiji Fujiwara (JP)

Robert E. O. Speedwagon

Reformed thug · Loyal friend

Speedwagon starts as a London street tough who tries to rob Jonathan, sees his character and decides on the spot to follow him. He narrates fights with total enthusiasm and later becomes an oil magnate whose foundation supports the Joestars for generations.

Voice
Yoji Ueda (JP)

Erina Pendleton

Jonathan's love

Erina is a gentle doctor's daughter whom Dio targets early on to hurt Jonathan. She marries Jonathan, survives the end of Part 1, and is still alive as Joseph's grandmother in Part 2.

Tarkus and Bruford

Undead knights

Two legendary warriors from British history, raised by Dio as zombies. Bruford's fight with Jonathan ends with an unexpected moment of respect, while Tarkus is the brutal giant who forces the Part's most painful sacrifice.

Part 2: Battle Tendency

Fifty years later, Jonathan's grandson Joseph discovers that the stone mask was built by the Pillar Men, an ancient race who feed on vampires the way vampires feed on humans. Part 2 is where JoJo becomes funny: Joseph wins by bluffing, cheating and reading his enemies' minds.

Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli

Hamon user · Will's grandson

Caesar is a stylish Italian who fights with Ripple-charged soap bubbles and carries a grudge over his family's history. He and Joseph clash constantly at first, then become close friends during their training. Their partnership is the emotional core of Part 2.

Voice
Takuya Sato (JP)

Lisa Lisa

Hamon master

Lisa Lisa is the cool, severe teacher who trains Joseph and Caesar on her island. She guards the Red Stone of Aja, the gem the Pillar Men need. Her connection to Joseph turns out to be far closer than either of them knows.

Voice
Atsuko Tanaka (JP)

Rudol von Stroheim

German officer · Cyborg

Stroheim is a Nazi officer who first appears studying a Pillar Man in Mexico and comes back rebuilt as a cyborg loaded with weapons. The series plays him as a loud, absurd ally against a greater threat rather than as a hero.

Kars

Leader of the Pillar Men

Kars is the genius who created the stone masks, wanting a way to survive sunlight and become perfect. Elegant and utterly without honour, he fights with light blades that extend from his body. His drive to become the Ultimate Life Form is the threat the whole Part builds toward.

Wamuu

Pillar Man · Warrior

Wamuu controls wind and lives by a strict warrior's code, which makes him the most respected villain of the Part. His final duel with Joseph is fought by chariot under ancient rules, and he earns real admiration from his enemy.

Esidisi and Santana

Pillar Men

Esidisi controls his body heat and boils his own blood into weapons, and he hides a ruthless mind behind sudden fits of crying. Santana, the youngest, is found in Mexico and shows Joseph how dangerous the Pillar Men's bodies really are.

Part 3: Stardust Crusaders

Dio's body is found at the bottom of the sea, and his awakening triggers Stands in Joestar descendants. Jotaro's mother Holly falls gravely ill because she can't control hers. With fifty days to live, she depends on a group of Stand users travelling from Japan to Cairo to kill DIO. This is the most famous Part, and the one that introduced Stands. Most enemy Stands here are named after tarot cards and Egyptian gods.

Noriaki Kakyoin

Stand: Hierophant Green

Kakyoin is a polite, reserved student who first appears under DIO's control and joins the group once Jotaro frees him. His Stand stretches into long tendrils and fires "Emerald Splash." He has never had friends who could see his Stand, which gives his loyalty to the group a quiet weight.

Voice
Daisuke Hirakawa (JP)

Jean Pierre Polnareff

Stand: Silver Chariot

Polnareff is a hot-headed, vain French swordsman hunting the man who killed his sister. His Stand is a fencing knight that can shed its armour for more speed. He's the group's comic relief and its most emotional member, and he reappears in Part 5 in a very different state.

Voice
Fumihiko Tachiki (JP)

Muhammad Avdol

Stand: Magician's Red

Avdol is an Egyptian fortune teller and old friend of Joseph, whose bird-headed Stand controls fire. He is the group's sensible voice and the one who explains how Stands work, which makes him the reader's guide to the new rules.

Voice
Kenta Miyake (JP)

Iggy

Stand: The Fool

Iggy is a Boston terrier with a love of coffee-flavoured gum and no interest in anyone's mission. His Stand shapes itself out of sand. He joins in Egypt under protest, and his slow turn from a selfish dog into a member of the team is one of Part 3's best arcs.

Holly Kujo

Jotaro's mother

Holly is Joseph's cheerful daughter, married into a Japanese family. She is too gentle to fight, and her Stand slowly poisons her. Saving her is the reason the journey happens.

Hol Horse

Stand: Emperor

Hol Horse is a cowboy assassin whose Stand is a gun with steerable bullets. He's a coward who prefers to work with a partner, which keeps getting him beaten in funny ways. He's one of the few enemies who keeps coming back.

Vanilla Ice

Stand: Cream

Vanilla Ice is DIO's fanatically loyal servant. His Stand swallows him and erases anything it passes through. He's one of the most frightening enemies in the series.

Enya and the D'Arby brothers

DIO's servants

Enya is the old woman who gave DIO the means to awaken Stands, and she uses Justice to control the dead. The D'Arby brothers, Daniel and Telence, bet souls on games of poker and video games. Their fights are among the cleverest in Part 3.

Part 4: Diamond Is Unbreakable

Part 4 stays in one place: the fictional town of Morioh, in 1999. Jotaro arrives to tell a high-school student that he is the secret son of Joseph Joestar, and the Part becomes a small-town mystery about a serial killer hiding in plain sight. From here on, Stand names come from Western music.

Koichi Hirose

Stand: Echoes

Koichi starts as a small, nervous classmate. His Stand hatches from an egg and evolves through three forms as he becomes braver. He grows more than anyone else in Part 4, earning even Jotaro's respect, and makes a brief appearance in Part 5.

Voice
Yuki Kaji (JP)

Okuyasu Nijimura

Stand: The Hand

Okuyasu is a dim but devoted friend whose Stand's right hand erases whatever it swipes. He often doesn't realise how powerful that is. He starts as an enemy alongside his older brother Keicho, and his loyalty to Josuke is the Part's warmest friendship.

Voice
Wataru Takagi (JP)

Rohan Kishibe

Manga artist · Stand: Heaven's Door

Rohan is a brilliant, arrogant manga author whose Stand turns people into books he can read and write in. He'd do almost anything for good material. He was popular enough to get his own spin-off stories, Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan.

Voice
Takahiro Sakurai (JP)

Shigechi, Yukako and Tonio

Morioh locals

Part 4 is full of townspeople with odd Stands. Shigekiyo "Shigechi" Yangu sends hundreds of tiny Harvest units to collect coins. Yukako Yamagishi controls her hair with Love Deluxe and is obsessed with Koichi. Tonio Trussardi is an Italian chef whose Stand, Pearl Jam, cures his diners in disgusting ways.

Hayato Kawajiri

The boy who suspects

Hayato is a young boy who notices that his father is not his father. Without a Stand of his own, he takes on Kira, and he's at the centre of the Part's tense final stretch.

Reimi Sugimoto

Ghost of Morioh

Reimi is the ghost of a teenage girl killed by Kira fifteen years earlier. She haunts a hidden alley with her dog and gives the heroes their first clue to the killer.

Part 5: Golden Wind

Naples, 2001. Giorno Giovanna, secretly the son of DIO born from Jonathan's stolen body, joins the Italian mob Passione so he can take it over and drive out the drug trade. The Part follows Bruno Bucciarati's team as they protect the boss's daughter, then turn against the boss himself.

Leone Abbacchio

Stand: Moody Blues

Abbacchio is a former police officer who fell into the mob after a mistake cost his partner's life. He's hostile to Giorno for most of the Part. His Stand can replay anything that happened in a place, so he's the team's investigator.

Guido Mista

Stand: Sex Pistols

Mista is a laid-back gunman with a deep fear of the number four. His Stand is six tiny creatures that ride and redirect his bullets. He's the most cheerful member of the team.

Narancia Ghirga

Stand: Aerosmith

Narancia is the youngest of the team, a runaway Bucciarati took in when no one else would. He's hot-tempered and can't do simple maths. His Stand is a small fighter plane that tracks enemies by their breath.

Pannacotta Fugo

Stand: Purple Haze

Fugo is a brilliant former student with a violent temper. His Stand releases a flesh-eating virus so deadly he can barely use it. He leaves the story at a key turning point. The light novel Purple Haze Feedback follows what happened to him afterwards.

Trish Una

The boss's daughter · Stand: Spice Girl

Trish is the girl the team is ordered to protect. She's spoiled at first and becomes much braver. Her Stand makes things soft and elastic, and her awakening is a turning point in the team's fight.

La Squadra di Esecuzione

The assassination team

A team of Passione hitmen who rebel against the boss and hunt Trish for leverage. They include Risotto Nero (Metallica), Prosciutto (The Grateful Dead), Pesci (Beach Boy), Ghiaccio (White Album), Melone (Baby Face), Illuso (Man in the Mirror) and Formaggio (Little Feet). Each one gets a single, inventive fight.

Part 6: Stone Ocean

Florida, 2011. Jotaro's daughter Jolyne is framed for a crime and sent to Green Dolphin Street Prison. There she learns that a follower of DIO has set the whole thing up to get at her father. Part 6 is the last Part in the original universe, and its ending changes everything.

Ermes Costello

Stand: Kiss

Ermes is a fellow inmate who got herself arrested on purpose so she could take revenge for her sister. Her Stand makes copies of objects using stickers. She's Jolyne's first real friend inside.

Foo Fighters (F.F.)

Stand: Foo Fighters

F.F. is a colony of plankton given intelligence by a Stand disc. It takes over a dead inmate's body and switches from enemy to ally. Its curiosity about what it means to be alive leads to some of the Part's gentlest scenes.

Emporio Alniño

Stand: Burning Down the House

Emporio is a boy born inside the prison who hides in a ghost room only Stand users can enter. His Stand calls up the ghosts of objects. He's the group's quiet source of information, and the ending depends on him.

Weather Report and Anasui

Allies in the men's wing

Weather Report has no memory of his past and can control the weather. His secret is tied directly to the villain's. Narciso Anasui, whose Stand Diver Down dives into objects and people, is devoted to Jolyne and keeps asking Jotaro's permission to marry her.

Part 7: Steel Ball Run

The story restarts in a new universe. In 1890, a horse race across the United States promises a huge prize, and some riders are secretly racing to collect the scattered parts of a saint's corpse. Steel Ball Run is often named the best-written Part, and it's a good example of how the series reuses its names with fresh characters. An anime adaptation has been announced; this guide sticks to the manga.

Diego Brando

Jockey · Stand: Scary Monsters

Diego is this universe's Dio: a ruthless British jockey from a poor background who turns into a velociraptor-like dinosaur. He's a rival rather than the main villain, competing for both the prize and the corpse.

Lucy Steel and Hot Pants

Allies in the race

Lucy is the very young wife of the race organiser, Steven Steel. She risks her life spying on the President. Hot Pants is a racer secretly working for the Vatican, whose Stand, Cream Starter, sprays flesh. She is guilt-ridden over her past and wants the corpse to atone for it.

Sandman and Mountain Tim

Early rivals

Sandman is a Native American runner racing on foot to buy back his people's land; his Stand is In a Silent Way. Mountain Tim is a gentle cowboy whose rope Stand, Oh! Lonesome Me, lets him split his body apart.

Part 8: JoJolion

A young man is found buried near a strange wall in Morioh after the 2011 earthquake, with no memory of who he is. JoJolion is a long, slow-burning mystery about identity, a family keeping secrets and a fruit called the Locacaca that can heal by trading body parts. The manga ended in 2021.

Yasuho Hirose

Stand: Paisley Park

Yasuho is the girl who finds Gappy and helps him look for his past. Her Stand guides people through maps, phones and networks. She is his closest ally and the reader's anchor through the Part's twists.

Norisuke Higashikata IV

Head of the Higashikata family · Stand: King Nothing

Norisuke runs a successful fruit business and takes Gappy into his household. He's kind, eccentric and hiding a hereditary curse that falls on his family's eldest sons.

Jobin and Joshu Higashikata

Norisuke's sons

Jobin is the polished eldest son. He has quietly allied with the Rock Humans and uses Speed King to store heat. His younger brother Joshu is a spoiled, girl-crazy teenager with Nut King Call, which bolts things together. One is a real threat; the other gets in the way.

Tooru

Stand: Wonder of U

Tooru is the hidden main villain. He is a Rock Human behind the Locacaca trade, and his Stand works as a kind of calamity: anyone who tries to pursue him suffers disaster. He's one of the hardest bosses in the series to understand, let alone beat.

Part 9: The JOJOLands

The JOJOLands began in Ultra Jump in 2023 and is still being serialised. It follows a crew of young criminals in Hawaii, and the opening chapters frame the story as Jodio's plan to get rich and build a "mechanism" for wealth. Because the Part is ongoing, the cast below covers only the core group as of the chapters covered here.

Dragona Joestar

Jodio's older brother · Stand: Smooth Operators

Dragona is fashionable, perceptive and fiercely protective of Jodio. His Stand can move small things, such as a person's features or a lock's parts, by tiny amounts.

Paco Laburantes and Usagi Alohaoe

Crew members

Paco is the crew's hulking muscle, with a Stand called The Hustle. Usagi is a nervous, oddball young man whose Stand is called All Along Watchtower. The crew works for a boss named Meryl Mei Qi.

How Stands are named and how they work

A Stand is "a manifestation of life energy" that stands beside its user. Most can only be seen by other Stand users. If a Stand is hurt, the user is hurt in the same place. A few rules hold across the series:

  • One ability per Stand. Even the strongest Stands do one thing, which is why fights turn into puzzles about how to use, or get around, that one thing.
  • Range trades against power. Close-range Stands like Star Platinum hit hardest, while long-range or automatic Stands can act far from their users but are often weaker or less precise.
  • Names are musical. Part 3's Stands use tarot cards and Egyptian gods. From Part 4 on, Araki names them after bands, albums and songs, from Killer Queen to November Rain. Some English releases rename a few of them for trademark reasons.
  • Stands can evolve. Echoes and Tusk have "Acts," and Requiem forms push a few Stands far past their original limits.

JoJo voice cast

David Production's anime has adapted Parts 1 through 6 so far, and the Japanese cast changes almost completely with each Part. English dub credits are listed only where we're sure of them. For more on the actors who appear across many anime, see our voice actors guide.

Reading and watch order

The order is simple: read or watch the Parts in number order. The anime was released like this:

  1. 2012–13 Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency (one TV series, Parts 1–2).
  2. 2014–15 Stardust Crusaders, in two halves; the second is subtitled Battle in Egypt.
  3. 2016 Diamond Is Unbreakable.
  4. 2018–19 Golden Wind.
  5. 2021–22 Stone Ocean, released on Netflix in batches.

Parts 1 to 6 follow on from each other, so skipping ahead means missing who people are. Part 7 is a soft reboot and can technically be read alone, but it's much richer if you know the original names it echoes. If you're deciding between formats, our manga vs anime guide covers the trade-offs, and the watch order guide explains how spin-offs fit around a main series. The Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan stories are standalone and can be enjoyed at any point after Part 4.

What the characters are about

Underneath the poses and the strange powers, JoJo is about inheritance: what a family passes down, and what each generation chooses to keep. The Joestar star birthmark marks the bloodline. So does a habit of facing danger head-on for someone else.

  • Heroes and villains mirror each other. Jonathan and Dio grow up in the same house. Giorno is DIO's son with Jonathan's body. Pucci and Jolyne both act out of love for someone who wronged them. The series keeps asking what separates the two.
  • Courage is a choice. The most-loved arcs, like Koichi's, Iggy's and Johnny's, belong to characters who start out scared or selfish and decide to act anyway.
  • Brains beat brawn. Joseph's bluffs set the tone, and from then on the hero who wins is usually the one who understands the rules best.

That mix of rivalry, legacy and puzzle-box fights has influenced a whole generation of shonen. You can see JoJo's fingerprints on Jujutsu Kaisen's cursed techniques, on Hunter x Hunter's Nen battles and on Chainsaw Man's oddball devils. Jonathan and Dio also belong on any list of iconic rivalries.

Frequently asked questions

Who are all the JoJos?

In order: Jonathan Joestar (Part 1), Joseph Joestar (Part 2), Jotaro Kujo (Part 3), Josuke Higashikata (Part 4), Giorno Giovanna (Part 5), Jolyne Cujoh (Part 6), Johnny Joestar (Part 7), a second Josuke Higashikata nicknamed Gappy (Part 8) and Jodio Joestar (Part 9). Each name can be shortened to "JoJo" through some combination of syllables, which is the running joke behind the title.

Who is the main villain of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

Dio Brando. He is the villain of Part 1, the hidden threat behind Part 3, the father of Part 5's hero Giorno, and the reason Part 6's villain Enrico Pucci acts at all. Every Part also has its own main antagonist: Kars, Yoshikage Kira, Diavolo, Pucci, Funny Valentine, Toru and so on.

What is a Stand in JoJo?

A Stand is a fighting spirit, a visible projection of a person's psyche with one specific, often very strange ability. Stands first appear in Part 3, replacing the breath-based Hamon (Ripple) technique used in Parts 1 and 2. Most are named after tarot cards in Part 3 and after Western bands, albums and songs from Part 4 onward.

Which JoJo Part should I start with?

Start with Part 1, Phantom Blood. It is short, and Parts 1 to 6 form one continuous family story with recurring characters. If Part 1 feels slow, many fans recommend pushing through to Part 2, where the series' sense of humour and trickery really arrives.

Who is the strongest JoJo?

Most fans point to Giorno Giovanna once he gains Gold Experience Requiem, whose ability is close to absolute within the story. Jotaro Kujo is the most consistently powerful across several Parts, and Johnny Joestar's final form of Tusk is also near the top. Our power scaling guide explains how fans argue these comparisons.

Who voices Jotaro Kujo?

Daisuke Ono voices Jotaro in the Japanese anime from Stardust Crusaders onward, and Matthew Mercer voices him in the English dub.
