Takemichi Hanagaki is 26, lives in a cramped apartment and works a dead-end part-time job. Then he sees on the news that Hinata Tachibana, the only girlfriend he ever had, has been killed along with her brother in a clash involving the Tokyo Manji Gang. The next day someone pushes him in front of a train, and instead of dying he wakes up in 2005, back in middle school. When he shakes hands with Hinata's younger brother Naoto and tells him about the future, he finds he can travel between the two times, and Naoto, who becomes a police detective, helps him use it.
The plan sounds simple: change the past so the Tokyo Manji Gang never becomes the crime syndicate that kills Hina. In practice, every fix creates a new disaster. The series is a delinquent drama with gang fights on every other page, but it's built around friendship and grief, and its large cast falls neatly into groups: Takemichi's circle, Toman and its divisions, and the rival gangs. This guide covers each.

Takemichi and the people he's saving
Takemichi's mission is personal before it's about gangs. These are the characters he keeps going back for.
Takemichi Hanagaki
Protagonist · Time leaper
Takemichi is no fighter. In the past he's a scrawny wannabe delinquent with bleached hair who loses almost every brawl. What he has is an absolute refusal to stay down, and that stubbornness earns him the respect of Toman's leaders, who start calling him the "crybaby hero." He cries constantly, apologises constantly and keeps getting back up, and over time he goes from an outsider using Toman to a member who would die for it.

- Yuki Shin (JP)
Hinata Tachibana
Takemichi's girlfriend
Hina is Takemichi's middle-school girlfriend: kind, brave and much tougher than she looks, ready to slap a gang leader if he hurts someone she cares about. Her death in each bad future is the reason Takemichi keeps leaping. She's more than a prize to be rescued; her faith in him is what keeps him trying.

- Azumi Waki (JP)
Naoto Tachibana
Hina's brother · Detective
Naoto is Hina's younger brother. In the present he's a police detective investigating Toman, and the handshake between him and Takemichi is the trigger for every time leap. He's analytical and serious where Takemichi is emotional, and he's the one who works out what needs to change in each timeline.
Atsushi Sendo (Akkun)
Takemichi's best friend
Akkun is the leader of Takemichi's middle-school friend group, with a dramatic red pompadour and a strong sense of loyalty. In the first future Takemichi visits, Akkun has been dragged into Toman's criminal world, and his fate there is one of the first signs of how badly things have gone wrong.
The Mizo Middle Five
Takuya, Makoto and Yamagishi
Takemichi's friends from Mizo Middle School are small-time delinquents with big talk. Takuya is the gentle, physically weak one; Makoto is the loud joker; Yamagishi is the gossip who somehow knows everything about every gang in Tokyo. They're comic relief most of the time, and their loyalty to Takemichi grounds the story.
Toman leadership
The Tokyo Manji Gang, or Toman, was founded by a group of middle-school friends. In 2005 it's a motorcycle gang with a code: no bullying the weak, no fighting dirty. In the future, it has become a ruthless criminal organisation. Figuring out who changed it, and how, is the mystery of the early arcs.
Manjiro Sano (Mikey)
Toman president · Founder
Mikey is small, sleepy, sweet-toothed and almost impossible to beat, with a kick that ends fights in one blow. He's childish and warm with his friends, and the gang follows him with total devotion. Behind that is real grief, especially over his older brother Shinichiro, and a darkness that grows in every future Takemichi visits. By the later arcs, saving Mikey from himself matters as much as saving Hina.
- Voice
- Yu Hayashi (JP)
Ken Ryuguji (Draken)
Toman vice president · Founder
Draken is tall, with a dragon tattoo on his temple and a much better head than his looks suggest. He's Mikey's closest friend and his moral anchor, the one who reminds him what Toman was meant to be. Takemichi learns early that protecting Draken is the key to keeping Mikey from falling apart.
- Voice
- Tatsuhisa Suzuki (JP)
Keisuke Baji
1st Division captain · Founder
Baji is wild, reckless and fiercely loyal, a founding member who leaves Toman for the rival gang Valhalla for reasons he won't explain. He's repeating a year at school, fights with his whole heart, and is devoted to his friends to a fault. His story is the centre of the Bloody Halloween arc and one of the most remembered in the series.
Chifuyu Matsuno
1st Division vice-captain
Chifuyu is Baji's devoted vice-captain and later Takemichi's partner. He's quick to fight but clear-headed, and he becomes the one person in the past Takemichi tells about his time leaps. Their friendship is the steadiest thing in the series, and Chifuyu's faith in Takemichi carries him through some of his worst moments.
Takashi Mitsuya
2nd Division captain · Founder
Mitsuya is the calm, responsible founder who looks after his little sisters, runs his school's handicraft club and designs Toman's uniforms. He's one of the gang's best fighters and one of its most level-headed voices. He's also the closest thing Toman has to a big brother for the younger members.
Hakkai Shiba
2nd Division vice-captain
Hakkai is huge, friendly and terrified of girls, which is a running joke. He's also living under the shadow of his violent older brother Taiju, the leader of Black Dragon. The Christmas Showdown arc is built around Hakkai's plan to free himself and his sister Yuzuha from Taiju.
Haruki Hayashida (Pah-chin)
3rd Division captain · Founder
Pah-chin is a blunt, hot-headed captain who would do anything for his friends. When a rival gang hurts people close to him, he takes matters into his own hands in a way that sets the whole Moebius conflict in motion. Toman's response to what he does exposes the first cracks in the gang.
Ryohei Hayashi (Peh-yan)
3rd Division vice-captain
Peh-yan is Pah-chin's best friend and vice-captain. His desperation to help Pah-chin makes him easy to manipulate, and someone does exactly that during the Moebius arc. He's a good example of how the series' villains turn loyalty into a weapon.
Nahoya and Soya Kawata
4th Division captain and vice-captain
The Kawata twins are known as Smiley and Angry. Nahoya (Smiley) always smiles, even mid-fight, and Soya (Angry) always looks furious, though he's actually the gentler of the two. They run a ramen shop with their family and lead the 4th Division together.
Yasuhiro Muto (Mucho)
5th Division captain
Mucho leads Toman's 5th Division, the unit that handles internal discipline. He's large, quiet and intimidating, and his loyalties turn out to be more complicated than they look during the Tenjiku arc.
Haruchiyo Sanzu
5th Division vice-captain
Sanzu wears a mask in the early arcs and says very little. He has a long history with the Sano family, and in the later story he becomes one of the most unsettling figures in Mikey's orbit.
Kazutora Hanemiya
Founder · Valhalla
Kazutora was one of Toman's six founding members, with a tiger tattoo on his neck and a fragile, unstable mind. A crime he committed as a boy, and Mikey's reaction to it, poisoned his relationship with the gang. He joins Valhalla full of resentment, and his arc is one of the darkest and most sympathetic in the series.
Toman's divisions at a glance
The table shows Toman's structure at the start of the story. Positions change as captains are arrested, leave or die, and Takemichi himself eventually takes over the 1st Division.
| Position | Holder | Vice / partner |
|---|---|---|
| President | Manjiro Sano (Mikey) | Vice president: Ken Ryuguji (Draken) |
| 1st Division captain | Keisuke Baji | Chifuyu Matsuno |
| 2nd Division captain | Takashi Mitsuya | Hakkai Shiba |
| 3rd Division captain | Haruki Hayashida (Pah-chin) | Ryohei Hayashi (Peh-yan) |
| 4th Division captain | Nahoya Kawata (Smiley) | Soya Kawata (Angry) |
| 5th Division captain | Yasuhiro Muto (Mucho) | Haruchiyo Sanzu |
Toman's six founders were Mikey, Draken, Baji, Mitsuya, Pah-chin and Kazutora. That history matters: most of the early arcs are about what happened between those six before Takemichi arrived.
Kisaki and Hanma
The single biggest threat in the early story isn't a rival gang. It's the pair who keep turning up wherever a gang war breaks out.
Tetta Kisaki
Strategist · Main antagonist
Kisaki is a cold, bespectacled schemer who works his way into Toman as a captain and slowly moves the gang toward crime. He fights almost never; he wins by manipulating people's loyalties against each other. Takemichi realises early that Kisaki is somehow at the centre of every bad future, and the long game between them drives the first three arcs. Their history turns out to be closer than Takemichi knew.
Shuji Hanma
Kisaki's partner
Hanma is tall, lazy-eyed and bored by everything except a good fight. He has the words "sin" and "punishment" tattooed on the backs of his hands and serves as Kisaki's muscle, moving between gangs as his partner's plans require. He's easygoing in a way that makes him harder to read than Kisaki.
The rival gangs
Each major arc pits Toman against a different gang. Each one also hides a link to Toman's own past.
Nagahiro Osanai
Leader of Moebius
Osanai leads Moebius, an older and more vicious gang that controls the Shinjuku area. His gang's attack on people close to Pah-chin starts the first major conflict. He's a straightforward thug, and that makes him a useful tool for someone smarter.
Taiju Shiba
Leader of Black Dragon (10th generation)
Taiju is Hakkai and Yuzuha's older brother, a brutal fighter who rules his gang and his family through violence. He leads Black Dragon, a gang that once meant something to the Sano family. His clash with Toman in the Christmas Showdown is as much a family reckoning as a gang war.
Yuzuha Shiba
Hakkai's older sister
Yuzuha is the middle Shiba sibling, tough and protective of Hakkai. She's spent years shielding him from Taiju, and her own decision to stand up to their brother is the turning point of the Christmas Showdown arc.
Seishu Inui and Hajime Kokonoi
Black Dragon officers
Inupi and Koko are childhood friends in Black Dragon. Inupi is obsessed with the gang's earlier, nobler generations, and Koko is a gifted money-maker whose talent for raising cash makes every gang want him. Both are bound up with the memory of someone they lost, and both play important parts after the Christmas Showdown.
Izana Kurokawa
Leader of Tenjiku
Izana is the leader of Tenjiku, a gang made up of the most dangerous delinquents in Yokohama. He's connected to the Sano family through Shinichiro, and his bitterness toward Mikey runs deep. He's polite, charismatic and among the strongest fighters in the series.
Kakucho
Tenjiku officer · Takemichi's childhood friend
Kakucho was Takemichi's friend in elementary school, when Takemichi was a braver kid than he remembers being. Now he's Izana's loyal right hand, scarred and serious. His reunion with Takemichi on opposite sides is one of the Tenjiku arc's most effective threads.
Ran and Rindo Haitani
Tenjiku executives
The Haitani brothers are stylish, well-known delinquents from Roppongi who fight as a cruel, efficient pair. Ran is the older, more relaxed one; Rindo is quicker to anger. They're two of the Tenjiku fighters who show how far beyond Toman's league that gang is at first.
Valhalla
Rival gang of the Bloody Halloween arc
Valhalla is a newer gang built around Hanma and Kazutora, and its war with Toman on Halloween is the centrepiece of the first season. It's less a gang with its own identity than a stage for Kisaki's plans and the founders' unresolved past.
The Sano family
Shinichiro Sano
Mikey's late older brother
Shinichiro was a friendly, hopeless-with-girls motorbike shop owner and the founder of the first generation of Black Dragon. He died before the story begins, but almost every arc circles back to him: his death shapes Mikey, Kazutora, Izana and Black Dragon alike.
Emma Sano
Mikey's younger sister
Emma is cheerful, fashionable and openly in love with Draken, who is slow to admit he feels the same. She's close friends with Hina and is one of the few people who can boss Mikey around.

Story arcs and watch order
The anime follows the manga's arcs in order, and the arcs are the easiest way to keep track of who's on which side:
- Toman / Moebius Takemichi meets Mikey and Draken, and the fight with Moebius threatens Draken's life (season one).
- Bloody Halloween Toman against Valhalla, with Baji and Kazutora at the centre (season one).
- Christmas Showdown The Shiba siblings and Black Dragon (season two, 2023).
- Tenjiku Izana's gang and the Kanto Incident (season three, 2023).
- Kanto Manji and Three Deities The final manga arcs, set after a time skip; not covered by the three anime seasons.
Start with season one episode one and watch in order; each arc depends on the last. If you want the ending, the manga is complete. Our watch order guide explains how live-action films fit alongside series like this, and the manga vs anime guide covers what tends to change between formats.
What the characters are about
Tokyo Revengers is a time-travel story, but the time travel is mostly a way of asking what you'd do if you could go back and be braver. Takemichi isn't strong. He changes things by refusing to give up on people, and the cast is built around that idea.
- Loyalty is the gang's highest value and its biggest weakness. Kisaki wins by turning people's devotion to each other into leverage.
- Grief drives almost everyone. Shinichiro's death alone sets Mikey, Kazutora, Izana and Black Dragon on their paths.
- Brothers and sisters appear in every arc: the Sanos, the Shibas, the Kawatas, the Haitanis. Each pair shows a different kind of family.
The story's cast is built like a sports anime's, with teams, captains and vice-captains, which is part of why it appeals to fans of Haikyuu and Blue Lock. For more on the gang's central friendship-turned-rivalry, see our guide to iconic rivalries, and for how the series handles its many losses, our character deaths guide.

Frequently asked questions
Who is Mikey in Tokyo Revengers?

What are the Toman divisions?
Toman is led by President Mikey and Vice President Draken and split into five divisions. At the start of the story the captains are Keisuke Baji (1st), Takashi Mitsuya (2nd), Haruki Hayashida, known as Pah-chin (3rd), Nahoya Kawata, known as Smiley (4th), and Yasuhiro Muto, known as Mucho (5th). Takemichi later becomes captain of the 1st Division.
Who is the main villain of Tokyo Revengers?
For most of the story it's Tetta Kisaki, a cold strategist who works his way into Toman to take it over and turn it into a criminal empire. His partner Shuji Hanma acts as his muscle. Later arcs shift focus to the darkness inside Mikey himself.
How does Takemichi time travel?
When Takemichi shakes hands with Naoto Tachibana, he leaps back to the same date twelve years earlier, inside his teenage body. Shaking Naoto's hand in the past sends him back to the present. Changes he makes in the past rewrite the future he returns to.
Who voices Takemichi and Mikey?
In Japanese, Takemichi Hanagaki is voiced by Yuki Shin and Mikey by Yu Hayashi. Draken is voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki.
Is Tokyo Revengers finished?
The manga is complete: it ran in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2017 to 2022. The anime's three seasons, released between 2021 and 2023, adapt the story through the end of the Tenjiku arc. There are also live-action films.
