Poppy Playtime Characters

Who's who in Mob Entertainment's toy-factory horror series: the monsters of each chapter, from Huggy Wuggy to CatNap and the Smiling Critters, the mysterious Prototype, and the Playtime Co. staff whose experiments started it all. Includes a note for parents.

Poppy Playtime takes place inside the abandoned factory of Playtime Co., once the world's most successful toy company. Ten years after every employee vanished, a former worker receives a package with a VHS tape and a note telling them to come back. Inside, the toys are waiting, and some of them are very big.

Mob Entertainment (formerly MOB Games) released the first chapter in October 2021, and Huggy Wuggy became a viral horror mascot almost overnight. Each chapter is released separately, explores a new part of the factory and introduces a new main monster, while tapes and notes slowly reveal what Playtime Co. was really doing: turning people into living toys. This guide follows the cast chapter by chapter, then covers the company staff.

One thing to know before the character lists: most of the giant toys are numbered experiments, the results of a Playtime Co. programme called the Bigger Bodies Initiative. The player character, an unnamed former employee, explores with the GrabPack, a backpack with two extending hands, and each chapter adds new tools to it.

Chapter 1: A Tight Squeeze

The first chapter is short: a tour of the factory's lobby and production lines, a few puzzles, and one long, memorable chase. It introduces the company, its mascot, and the doll the series is named after.

Poppy Playtime

The first Playtime Co. doll

Poppy is a red-haired doll in a blue dress, the company's first toy and its most beloved for decades. The player finds her locked in a glass case deep in the factory and, at the end of Chapter 1, opens it. She can talk and move on her own, and from then on she's a voice guiding the player, with motives she doesn't fully share.

The Prototype

Experiment 1006

The Prototype is the series' central mystery. It appears as a long, skeletal mechanical hand, and in Chapter 1 it's just a hint in the background. Tapes reveal it was the first successful experiment, intelligent and patient, and that it planned the uprising that killed the staff. The other toys either follow it or fear it.

Chapter 2: Fly in a Web

Released in May 2022, Chapter 2 sends the player into the factory's Game Station, a play area turned into a deadly set of minigames. Poppy promises a way out by train, if the player can collect the code.

Kissy Missy

Huggy Wuggy's counterpart

Kissy Missy is a pink version of Huggy Wuggy, with long eyelashes and a bow. Her big moment comes in Chapter 2, when she quietly helps the player by holding open a door. She's one of the few giant toys who seems to be on the player's side, and she later appears alongside Poppy.

Bunzo Bunny

Musical Memory game

Bunzo is a cymbal-banging rabbit who appears at the end of the Musical Memory game. Like most of the Game Station toys, he's a friendly product design turned into a monster, and the player has to escape him.

PJ Pug-a-Pillar

Statues game

PJ is a long pug-caterpillar hybrid, originally a ride-on toy. He hunts the player through the Statues game, where he can only move when the player isn't looking. His design is one of the series' cleverest mixes of cute and wrong.

The Wuggies

Whack-a-Wuggy

Smaller, Huggy-shaped toys who pop out in the Whack-a-Wuggy game. They're less a character than an idea: Huggy Wuggy turned into a product line, each copy as hungry as the original.

Chapter 3: Deep Sleep

Chapter 3 arrived in January 2024 and is much longer and darker. The player falls into Playcare, an orphanage built under the factory where children were raised alongside, and then turned into, toys. Its mascots are the Smiling Critters, a line of colourful animal toys with a cartoon of their own.

DogDay

Leader of the Smiling Critters

DogDay is the sunny orange dog who led the Critters. The player finds him badly maimed and tied up, the last of his group to resist CatNap. He warns the player about what's coming, and his fate is one of the chapter's grimmest moments.

Bobby BearHug

Smiling Critter

A red bear Critter built around hugs and kindness. Like most of the line, she appears in Playcare as a victim of CatNap's takeover rather than a threat.

Bubba Bubbaphant

Smiling Critter

The blue elephant Critter, the clever, bookish one of the group. His figure is among those the player finds in Playcare.

Crafty Corn

Smiling Critter

A pastel unicorn Critter themed around arts and crafts. She's a fan favourite for her design, though she plays little part in the story.

Hoppy Hopscotch

Smiling Critter

A green rabbit Critter built around energy and games. Her toy version is one of the most recognisable pieces of Critters merchandise.

KickinChicken

Smiling Critter

The yellow chicken Critter, themed around cool confidence. Like the others, he mostly matters for what happened to him.

PickyPiggy

Smiling Critter

A pink pig Critter themed around food. She rounds out the eight-member line alongside CatNap and DogDay.

Miss Delight

Playcare's teacher

Miss Delight is a cheerful schoolteacher toy who runs Playcare's school area, and the chapter's mid-game chase. Her smile and her classroom manner make the moment she turns on the player one of the series' best scares.

Ollie

Voice on the phone

Ollie is a child's voice who contacts the player by toy phone and guides them through Playcare. He's helpful, oddly well informed and never seen in person, which has made him one of the fandom's most debated characters.

Chapter 4: Safe Haven

Chapter 4 was released in January 2025 and moves deeper into the facility, to a place where surviving toys have taken refuge. It introduces a new set of monsters, including Doey the Doughman, a soft, friendly-looking dough figure at the centre of the chapter, Yarnaby, a yarn-maned lion toy, and Pianosaurus, a dinosaur built around a piano. The Prototype's presence grows much more direct. Because the chapter is recent and the story is ongoing, we've kept the details light here.

Mob Entertainment also released Project: Playtime (2022), a free multiplayer spin-off in which one player controls a monster, such as the jack-in-the-box creature Boxy Boo, and the others try to build a toy and escape. A film adaptation has been announced with Legendary Entertainment.

Playtime Co. staff

Almost all the humans in Poppy Playtime are dead or missing before the game begins. You learn about them from VHS tapes, notes and recorded interviews scattered around the factory, and they're the people responsible for everything the player runs from.

Elliot Ludwig

Founder of Playtime Co.

Elliot Ludwig is the toymaker who founded Playtime Co. and is presented in the company's own material as a kindly inventor. The deeper the player goes, the more his company looks like a front for something else. Much of the fandom's theorising is about how much he knew and what became of him.

Harley Sawyer

Lead scientist

Harley Sawyer is the scientist most closely linked to the experiments, especially in Playcare. His recordings are cold and clinical about turning people into toys, and he's the closest thing the series has to a human villain.

Leith Pierre

Executive

Leith Pierre is a senior Playtime Co. executive who appears in the factory's recordings. They show how management treated the experiments as assets to be managed, and how badly the company misjudged what it had made.

The player

Former employee

The player character is a former Playtime Co. worker who comes back after receiving a mysterious package. They never speak and are never named, and the story keeps hinting that they were more involved in the company's work than they remember.

The orphans of Playcare

Victims of the Bigger Bodies Initiative

Playcare's children were the experiments' raw material. Their drawings, recordings and the toys they became are what make Chapter 3 so bleak, and the reason many of the monsters are better understood as victims.

The Hour of Joy

The factory is empty because of the Hour of Joy, the day the experiments turned on the staff. Led by the Prototype, the toys killed the employees. Every chapter adds a little more about how it happened and who survived. It's the event that turns the series from a monster chase into a story about a company that treated children and employees as material, and about the toys it created getting their revenge.

Why the characters work

Poppy Playtime borrows a lot from Five Nights at Freddy's: a children's entertainment company, mascots that come alive, and a dark story told through tapes. What it adds is scale and movement. The monsters are huge and physical, and the GrabPack lets you swing, pull and run instead of sitting in an office.

  • The toys are victims first. Each chapter reveals that its monster was a person, often a child, before Playtime Co. got to them. CatNap is the clearest case.
  • The designs do the work. Huggy Wuggy's grin and Mommy Long Legs' stretch are cute products pushed slightly too far, a basic idea in good character design.
  • Nobody can be trusted. Poppy, Ollie, even the player: every helpful voice might have its own reasons.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the main villain in Poppy Playtime?

The Prototype, also known as Experiment 1006. For most of the series it's seen only as a long mechanical hand reaching out of the dark, but it's the leader of the toys and the force behind the Hour of Joy. Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs and CatNap are the chapter bosses; the Prototype is the one they all answer to.

Is Huggy Wuggy a good guy or a bad guy?

He's the first monster of the series. Huggy Wuggy was Playtime Co.'s hit 1984 toy, but the giant version in the factory is a living experiment that chases the player through the vents in Chapter 1. His partner Kissy Missy, by contrast, helps the player in Chapter 2.

Who is CatNap?

CatNap is the purple cat from the Smiling Critters toy line and the main antagonist of Chapter 3, Deep Sleep. He was the Playcare orphanage's guardian figure, releases a red gas that causes hallucinations, and is devoted to the Prototype, whom he treats almost like a god.

Is Poppy Playtime OK for kids?

It's a horror game with jumpscares, chase sequences, implied violence and disturbing themes about experiments on people, including children. It isn't graphically gory, but it's designed to frighten. Most families treat it as suitable for teenagers rather than young children, and the cartoon toys can make it look gentler than it is.

How many Poppy Playtime chapters are there?

Four chapters had been released when this page was updated: A Tight Squeeze (2021), Fly in a Web (2022), Deep Sleep (2024) and Safe Haven (2025). Mob Entertainment releases them as separate purchases, and the story isn't finished.

Is Poppy the doll good?

It's deliberately unclear. Poppy asks the player to free her and promises to help them escape, then sabotages the train at the end of Chapter 2 because she needs them to stay and help defeat the Prototype. She's an ally with her own agenda.
