Korean pop culture, often called the Hallyu or Korean Wave, now produces some of the most-watched characters in the world. A few years ago that meant K-drama leads and webtoon heroes. In 2025 it also meant an animated girl group: Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters turned Rumi, Mira and Zoey into one of the year's biggest pop-culture stories.

This page focuses on fictional characters. Real K-pop idols are people, not characters, so they're not profiled here. Instead you'll find the K-pop world's official character mascots, the KPop Demon Hunters cast, the leads of the dramas most people search for, and the webtoon heroes behind recent anime hits. Cards are tagged by medium, so you can filter to just dramas or just webtoons.

KPop Demon Hunters characters

KPop Demon Hunters is an animated musical film from Sony Pictures Animation, released on Netflix in June 2025 and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Its premise: K-pop idols whose voices power a magical barrier, the Honmoon, that keeps demons out of the human world. Its songs, especially "Golden", became chart hits in their own right, and it became one of Netflix's most-watched films.

Mira

HUNTR/X · Visual and dancer

Mira is the tall, deadpan member who wields a curved polearm in battle. She has a blunt sense of humour and a strained relationship with her family, and she's the quickest to call out nonsense. Under the cool attitude she's fiercely protective of her bandmates.

Voice
May Hong (speaking), Audrey Nuna (singing)

Zoey

HUNTR/X · Rapper and lyricist

Zoey is the youngest, the group's songwriter and rapper, and its burst of nervous energy. She fights with throwing knives and writes in notebooks full of doodles.

Voice
Ji-young Yoo (speaking), Rei Ami (singing)

Jinu

Saja Boys leader · Demon

Jinu is the leader of the Saja Boys, a demon boy band sent to steal HUNTR/X's fans and break the Honmoon. He's charming and guilt-ridden: centuries ago he made a deal with Gwi-Ma that cost him his family. His bond with Rumi, two people hiding what they are, is the film's emotional core.

Voice
Ahn Hyo-seop (speaking), Andrew Choi (singing)

The Saja Boys

Demon boy band

Besides Jinu, the Saja Boys are Abby, Mystery, Romance and Baby. Each is built on a familiar K-pop member "type", from the muscular one to the mysterious one, which the film plays for laughs. They're Gwi-Ma's tools for feeding on fans' souls.

Gwi-Ma

Demon king · Main villain

Gwi-Ma is the ruler of the demon world, a voice and a mouth of flame more than a body. He wants to consume human souls and feeds on the shame and secrets of the people he controls, which is why Jinu and Rumi are so vulnerable to him.

Voice
Lee Byung-hun

Celine

Former hunter · Rumi's guardian

Celine is a member of the previous generation of singing hunters who raised Rumi and trained the group. She loves Rumi but taught her to hide her demon side, a choice the film treats with sympathy and criticism in equal measure.

Voice
Yunjin Kim

Bobby

HUNTR/X manager

Bobby is the group's frazzled, devoted manager, juggling schedules and promotion without knowing what his clients do at night. He's mostly comic relief.

Voice
Ken Jeong

Derpy and Sussie

Tiger and magpie

A goofy blue tiger and a hat-wearing magpie who act as messengers. They're modelled on the tiger and magpie of traditional Korean folk paintings, and became merch favourites.

Korean drama characters

K-dramas usually run a single season of 12 to 20 episodes, so characters get complete arcs. These are the leads people search for most. For the full cast of the biggest one, see our Squid Game characters guide.

Cho Sang-woo (Player 218)

Squid Game season 1

Sang-woo is Gi-hun's childhood friend, the neighbourhood success story who went to Seoul National University and then stole from his clients. He's smart and increasingly ruthless, and his choices show how quickly desperation can erase loyalty.

Se-ri is a South Korean heiress and self-made fashion executive whose paragliding accident blows her across the border into North Korea. Used to giving orders, she has to rely on a village and a soldier she knows nothing about. Her mix of bossiness and loneliness makes her very easy to root for.

Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok

Crash Landing on You

Seo-bi

Kingdom

Actor
Bae Doona

Queen Consort Cho

Kingdom

The young queen and her father, Cho Hak-ju, keep the dying king hidden to protect their family's grip on power. Her ambition and willingness to use the plague make her one of the series' most chilling villains.

Actor
Kim Hye-jun

Woo Young-woo

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022)

The Glory (2022–23)

Actor
Gong Yoo

Shim Su-ryeon

The Penthouse (2020–21)

Su-ryeon is a wealthy, elegant resident of the luxury Hera Palace tower who discovers a terrible secret about a girl's death there and turns to revenge. The Penthouse is a deliberately outrageous makjang drama, full of twists.

Lim Ju-kyung

True Beauty · Yaongyi

Ju-kyung is a high-schooler who masters makeup after being bullied about her looks, and becomes a "goddess" at her new school while hiding her bare face. The story is about self-image as much as romance. It became a 2020 drama.

Park Hyung-seok

Lookism · Park Tae-jun

Hyung-seok is a bullied, overweight student who wakes up with a second, conventionally handsome body, and alternates between the two. It's an action-heavy series about how differently people are treated based on appearance.

K-pop character mascots: BT21 and SKZOO

K-pop groups often design cartoon characters with fans, and these mascots behave a lot like Sanrio characters: plush toys, stationery and collabs. Unlike the idols themselves, these are genuine fictional characters.

Wolf Chan, Leebit, Dwaekki, Jiniret

SKZOO · Stray Kids

Stray Kids' SKZOO animals are each linked to a member: Bang Chan's wolf-puppy, Lee Know's rabbit, Changbin's pig-rabbit and Hyunjin's ferret.

Han Quokka, BbokAri, PuppyM, FoxI.Ny

SKZOO · Stray Kids

The rest of the set: Han's quokka, Felix's chick, Seungmin's puppy and I.N's fox. Fans often use the characters as shorthand for the members themselves.

A curious little penguin in aviator goggles and his friends in a snowy village. He's so popular with Korean preschoolers that he's nicknamed "President Pororo".

Pinkfong and Baby Shark

Where to start

  1. New to all of it — KPop Demon Hunters. It's under two hours, family-friendly and a crash course in K-pop culture.
  2. For thrillers — Squid Game season 1, then Kingdom if you like horror and history together.
  3. For romance — Crash Landing on You or Goblin.
  4. For something gentle — Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
  5. For anime fans — the Solo Leveling anime, then the webtoon.

What links these characters is a Korean storytelling habit: a big hook (deadly games, a border, a zombie plague, a secret demon heritage) wrapped around very personal stakes like debt, family and shame. If you like that blend, our female protagonists and iconic rivalries guides are good next stops.
