Power is the best argument that Chainsaw Man is a comedy as well as a horror story. She's a fiend, a devil living in a human corpse, with two small red horns and a personality made entirely of appetites: food, blood, attention and praise. She lies about everything, takes credit for everything, refuses to bathe and runs away from danger. She's also, by the end of Part 1, the person Denji loves most.
Fans often search for her as "Power CSM", and she's easily one of the series' best-loved characters. That's partly because she's so funny, and partly because Tatsuki Fujimoto lets her change in a way that feels earned. This profile covers who she is, how her blood powers work, her story through Part 1 and the people who matter to her. For the rest of the cast, see the full Chainsaw Man character guide.
Who is Power?
Power is the Blood Devil, a devil who embodies people's fear of blood, living in a human body. That makes her a fiend: she keeps a devil's mind and abilities, but she's weaker than she would be in her own form. Public Safety, the government's devil-hunting agency, recruits fiends to fight other devils, and Power is assigned to Makima's experimental Special Division 4.
She's introduced as Denji's new partner. She tells him straight away that she's superior to humans and has no intention of being friendly. Within days she's tried to sell him out. Within weeks she's moved into his apartment, eating his food and fighting him for the bathroom. The story of Power is the story of how she goes from using Denji to standing next to him.
- The Blood Fiend, assigned to Public Safety's Special Division 4.
- Denji's partner on the job and roommate at home, alongside Aki Hayakawa.
- The proud owner of Meowy, a cat she loves more than anything else at the start.
- One of the very few devils who comes to care for humans.
- A fan favourite whose fate is one of the most discussed moments in modern manga.
Personality
Power is selfish, vain, cowardly and extremely confident, a combination that should be unbearable and somehow isn't. She calls herself a genius, boasts about kills she didn't make and invents excuses for every failure. She lies so automatically that she seems to believe herself. She has the table manners of a wild animal and refuses to eat vegetables.
The joke is that all of it is completely transparent. Power is a terrible liar and a terrible schemer, and she gives herself away almost immediately. That makes her more childlike than villainous. She wants to be safe, admired and fed, and she has no idea how to get those things except by shouting.
Underneath, she's scared. Like most devils, Power knows exactly where she stands in the hierarchy, and she's terrified of anything stronger than her. She avoids fights she might lose and grovels shamelessly when outmatched. As Part 1 goes on, she learns that there are people she'd risk herself for. That's the change at the centre of her character.
Power and Denji: the same kind of person
Power and Denji get along because they're alike. Both are crude, impulsive and motivated by simple needs. Both grew up, in their different ways, with nothing. Neither has had anyone take care of them. Their friendship is mostly arguing, scheming and causing chaos, and it's also the first relationship either of them has had with someone who sees them as an equal.
Powers and abilities
Power's ability is blood manipulation. She can draw blood from her own body and shape it into weapons, which harden into solid objects she can wield or throw.
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Blood weapons | She forms hammers, spears, scythes and blades from her own blood, often huge and crude, matching her fighting style. |
| Blood control | She can also work with blood outside her own body, though it takes more out of her. Late in Part 1, this side of her power becomes vital to Denji. |
| Regeneration | Drinking blood restores her, like other fiends and devils. In fights she often grabs any blood she can find. |
| Devil strength | She's much stronger and tougher than a human, even in her weakened fiend body. |
Limits
Her big limitation is that using blood drains her. Overuse leaves her anaemic and weak, and in long fights she runs out quickly. She's also not a very disciplined fighter, and depends on the people around her. Her greatest power, as the story shows, isn't her strength. It's her loyalty, once she's decided to give it.
Power's story, arc by arc
The anime's first season and the 2025 Reze Arc film cover Power's early arcs. Later Part 1 material appears only in the manga, and is marked below.
Meeting Denji and the Bat Devil
Power and Denji are assigned to each other as Public Safety's newest devil-hunting pair. On their first job she nearly gets him killed and then tries to hand him over to the Bat Devil, which had kidnapped Meowy and threatened to eat her unless Power brought it humans. Denji, furious, saves the cat anyway and defeats the devil. That's the moment Power starts to trust him, in her own selfish way. She also bribes him with a promise of physical affection, a running joke that pays off in a way neither of them expects.
Moving in with Aki
Makima has Power move into the apartment Denji shares with Aki Hayakawa. It's a disaster: she makes a mess, refuses to shower and sides with whichever roommate is losing an argument. But the three of them settle into something like a household, with Aki cooking and cleaning and Denji and Power acting like younger siblings.
The Eternity Devil and Katana Man
Power joins Division 4 on the missions that follow, including the trap set by the Eternity Devil and the attack led by Katana Man. She's often more of a liability than a help. But she's there, and she's getting used to the idea that the people around her are on her side.
Training with Kishibe
After the attack on Division 4, Denji and Power are trained by Kishibe, Public Safety's strongest devil hunter. His method is simple and harsh: he kills them over and over until they learn to think in a fight. They get stronger, and closer, because they suffer through it together.
The Reze arc
During the Reze arc Power is mostly in the background, but her presence matters. She's part of the life Denji is building, the reason he has something to lose.
The later arcs and her fate
In the International Assassins arc, Power and Denji are dragged into Hell, where they encounter the Darkness Devil. The experience leaves Power deeply traumatised. She stops sleeping, can't be left alone and won't go anywhere without Denji. In one of the series' gentlest stretches, Denji takes care of her, bathing her and staying with her through the nights. It's the moment their friendship turns into something closer to family.
Later, after Aki's death, Makima reveals herself as the Control Devil. She kills Power in front of Denji, breaking him. But the story doesn't end there. Power's blood survives inside Denji, and when he's in danger, the Blood Devil returns to save him. Before disappearing, she makes a final deal with Denji: she'll lend him her power if he promises to find her again. Devils who die are reborn, and the Blood Devil reborn won't remember him. Denji promises to find her and make her into Power again, with the same personality and the same friendship. That promise is one of the most moving moments in Part 1.
Her death is often ranked among the hardest in modern manga. Our guide to character deaths looks at why some deaths land so heavily.
Part 2
Part 2 opens without Power. Denji is still carrying the promise he made to her, and the question of whether he'll find her again hangs over his story. This page doesn't track recent chapters, so check the manga for her current status.
Relationships
Denji
Partner · Best friend
Denji and Power start out as rivals, scammers and roommates. By the end of Part 1 she's the person he cares about most, and she would die for him. Their friendship is one of the best things in the series: never romantic, always chaotic and deeply loyal.
Aki Hayakawa
Roommate · Reluctant guardian
Aki is stuck looking after Power and Denji, and treats them like annoying younger siblings. He cooks for them, cleans up after them and worries about them, and he quietly becomes a big brother to both.
Meowy
Pet cat
Meowy is the only creature Power loves at the start of the story. Her willingness to risk others to save the cat shows how selfish she is. Denji's willingness to save Meowy anyway shows her what friendship can look like.
Makima
Boss
Makima recruits Power and places her with Denji. Power fears her from the start in a way she can't explain. It's one of the earliest hints that something about Makima is very wrong.
Kishibe
Trainer
Kishibe trains Power and Denji by killing them repeatedly. He's harsh, but he seems to grow fond of them.
Himeno
Senior colleague
Himeno is part of Division 4 in Power's early days. Her easy warmth sets the tone for the found family that forms around Denji, Power and Aki.
Trivia
- Horns. Power's horns are the most visible sign that she's a fiend. Fiends' heads are usually deformed in some way.
- The name. Power simply calls herself Power, which suits her: she's obsessed with being strong and admired.
- Voice cast. Fairouz Ai voices her in Japanese and Sarah Wiedenheft in English. Our voice actors guide covers more anime voice casts.
- Hygiene. Her refusal to bathe or flush the toilet is a running gag, and one of the jokes that tells you exactly what kind of character she is.
- Popularity. She's one of the most popular characters in the series, and frequently cosplayed.
- Similar shows. Fans of Chainsaw Man's bleak, chaotic tone often turn to Jujutsu Kaisen, another MAPPA adaptation from the same era of Weekly Shonen Jump.
Why Power matters to the story
Power is the comic heart of Chainsaw Man and, in the end, one of its emotional anchors. She embodies its central idea: that the people with the least, devils, fiends, orphans, are capable of real love if someone treats them as people. Her arc is small in scope and huge in effect. She starts out selfish and scared, and she ends up as someone who'd come back from death to save her best friend.
She's also part of one of manga's best examples of a found family: three damaged people forced into an apartment who become a family almost by accident. And she's a reminder of what makes an anti-hero lovable: not that she's secretly good, but that she becomes good, slowly and against her own instincts.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Power in Chainsaw Man?
Power is the Blood Fiend, the Blood Devil occupying a human corpse. She works as a Public Safety devil hunter in Makima's Special Division 4, partnered with Denji, and lives with Denji and Aki. She's loud, selfish, cowardly and a compulsive liar, and over Part 1 she becomes Denji's closest friend.
What is a fiend in Chainsaw Man?
A fiend is a devil that has taken over a human corpse. Fiends keep the devil's mind and powers, but their human-shaped bodies are weaker. You can usually spot them by their deformed heads, such as Power's horns. They're different from hybrids like Denji, who are living humans with a devil inside them.
Does Power die in Chainsaw Man?
Yes, in Part 1 of the manga, though the story doesn't end there for her. The details are in the spoiler section above. Her death happens well beyond the anime and the 2025 film.
Is Power in Chainsaw Man Part 2?
Part 2 opens without her, and her absence is felt. Part 1 ends with a promise that Denji will look for her again, and that promise hangs over his story. We don't cover recent Part 2 chapters here, so check the manga for her current status.
Who voices Power?
Fairouz Ai voices Power in Japanese, and Sarah Wiedenheft voices her in the English dub.
Why is Power so popular?
She's very funny, she's never boring and she isn't a fanservice character in the usual way. She's gross, rude and unapologetic. And her growth from pure self-interest to genuine loyalty is one of the most rewarding arcs in Part 1.
