Satoru Gojo is the reason anyone in Jujutsu Kaisen is still alive. He was born into the Gojo clan with both the Six Eyes and the Limitless technique, a pairing that hadn't appeared in centuries. His birth is said to have shifted the balance of the whole jujutsu world. Curses grew stronger to match him, and assassins came after him as a child.
He's also a terrible role model in most of the obvious ways. He's vain, flippant, late for everything and rude to his elders, and he spends missions eating sweets. But he's the one adult who keeps choosing the students over the system. He saves Yuji and Yuta from execution and keeps Megumi from being sold to his own father's clan. His plan for fixing jujutsu society is to raise people strong enough to replace it. This profile covers his powers, his story arc by arc and the people who matter to him. For the rest of the cast, see the full JJK character guide.
Who is Satoru Gojo?
When Jujutsu Kaisen begins, Gojo is a special grade sorcerer and teacher of the first-year class at Tokyo Jujutsu High. He's one of only four special grade sorcerers and plainly the strongest, strong enough that the conservative higher-ups who control jujutsu society can't afford to cross him openly. They depend on him and fear him in equal measure.
His role in the story is unusual for a mentor. Normally the strongest adult in a shonen series gets taken off the board early so the students can grow. Gojo's removal is the entire plot. Every antagonist plan, from Kenjaku's alliance with the disaster curses to the Shibuya Incident, starts with the question of how to deal with him. As long as he's free, the villains can't move.
- First person in centuries to inherit both the Six Eyes and Limitless.
- Former best friend of Suguru Geto, and the man who killed him.
- Guardian of Megumi Fushiguro since Megumi was a child.
- Teacher of Yuji, Megumi and Nobara, and earlier of Yuta, Maki, Inumaki and Panda.
- Sealed in the Prison Realm at the end of the Shibuya Incident.
Personality
Gojo is relentlessly unserious on the surface. He teases his students, needles Utahime, ignores protocol, shows up with souvenirs, and narrates his own fights like a lecture. He's confident to the point of arrogance, and the story mostly lets him get away with it, because he's usually right.
Underneath there's loneliness. Being the strongest has cut him off from almost everyone. Geto was the only person who stood next to him rather than behind him, and losing Geto is the wound the series keeps returning to. The playfulness keeps people at arm's length, and it lets him make decisions others couldn't live with.
He's also a genuinely protective teacher, in an odd way. He throws students into missions above their level because he thinks surviving real danger is the only way to grow. But he goes to war with the higher-ups the moment those same students are threatened. He doesn't believe in jujutsu society. He believes in the kids.
His teaching philosophy
Gojo has said he could kill the higher-ups, but that someone just as bad would replace them. His real project is a reset from within: raise strong, independent sorcerers who think for themselves, and let them change the culture. It's a slower, more hopeful plan than Geto's, and it's why he cares so much about students like Yuji and Yuta, who exist only because he refused to let the system kill them.
Abilities and cursed technique
Gojo's strength comes from two inherited gifts that amplify each other, backed by enormous cursed energy, superb hand-to-hand skill and, after his teenage awakening, mastery of reverse cursed technique.
The Six Eyes
The Six Eyes are a rare inherited trait of the Gojo clan. They let him see cursed energy in extraordinary detail: its flow, its residue, and how other people's techniques work. Above all, they let him control his own energy so precisely that his techniques cost almost nothing to use. Without them, Limitless would be too demanding to use freely. With them, he can keep Infinity running nearly all the time. The amount of information they take in is the reason he usually keeps his eyes covered.
Limitless
Limitless is the Gojo clan's hereditary technique. It brings the mathematical idea of infinity into reality around him, letting him control space at very fine scales. It has several applications:
| Technique | What it does |
|---|---|
| Infinity | The neutral form. It puts an endless series of shrinking distances between Gojo and anything approaching him, so attacks slow to a stop and never touch him. It filters automatically for threats. |
| Blue (Lapse) | The amplified form. It creates a point of attraction that pulls matter in and crushes it. He also uses it to pull himself across distances at high speed. |
| Red (Reversal) | Limitless powered by positive (reverse) cursed energy. It makes a violent repulsive blast, the opposite of Blue. |
| Hollow Purple | Blue and Red fused into an imaginary mass that erases everything in its path. It's a secret technique of the Gojo clan, and he can push its output beyond normal limits. |
Reverse cursed technique
Ordinary cursed energy is negative. Reverse cursed technique multiplies it into positive energy that can heal. Gojo grasps it in a near-death moment as a teenager, and from then on he can repair catastrophic damage to his own body, including his brain. He later uses it to keep his technique from burning out. He can't heal other people with it. That's why Shoko is so valuable.
Combat skill
Take the technique away and Gojo is still an elite martial artist with enormous cursed energy reserves. The Six Eyes let him read opponents before they move, and his raw speed is enough to make even special grade curses look slow.
Domain expansion: Unlimited Void
Gojo's domain traps everyone inside the interior of Limitless itself. Inside, victims receive infinite information, everything perceivable at once, without end. They're paralysed, unable to take any action, because they can never finish processing the moment they're in. Like all domains, its effect is a guaranteed hit, so it's one of the most decisive domains in the series. He activates it with a distinctive crossed-finger hand sign.
- The 0.2-second domain. In Shibuya, surrounded by civilians, he opens the domain for a fifth of a second. That's long enough to paralyse everyone in range without killing them. It's the most famous showcase of how precisely he controls it.
- Selective contact. Anyone Gojo is touching when it activates shares his immunity, which lets him bring an ally inside safely.
- Weaknesses. Domains clash, and a more refined or better-built one can resist his. After any domain, the technique burns out for a time, which matters enormously against Sukuna.
Gojo's story, arc by arc
Childhood and the Gojo clan
Gojo was a target from birth. The jujutsu world reorganised itself around a baby with the Six Eyes and Limitless, and the curse users who put bounties on him understood exactly what he would become. He grew up privileged, isolated and unimpressed by everyone, which is roughly how he arrived at Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Hidden Inventory and Premature Death
As second-years, Gojo and Geto were already called the strongest pair of sorcerers alive, with Shoko as their classmate. They're assigned to protect Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel due to merge with Tengen. The assassin Toji Fushiguro, a man with no cursed energy at all, wears them down and kills Riko. He also nearly kills Gojo, stabbing him through Infinity with the Inverted Spear of Heaven.
Gojo comes back. On the edge of death he finally understands reverse cursed technique, heals himself, and emerges in a strange, exhilarated state. He describes himself as alone and honoured above everything. He kills Toji with his first Hollow Purple. With his last words, Toji mentions a son he's about to sell to the Zenin clan. Gojo steps in and arranges for Megumi to become a sorcerer on his own terms instead.
It's the start of Gojo as the strongest, and the end of his friendship with Geto. Geto, shaken by the cult members who applauded Riko's death, starts down the path that leads to his defection a year later. The two meet once more on a Shinjuku street, and Gojo lets him go.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0
About a decade later, Gojo takes in Yuta Okkotsu, a boy haunted by the special grade curse Rika, and refuses to let him be executed. When Geto launches the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons to seize Rika, Gojo is held up by Miguel and arrives only after Yuta has already beaten Geto. He finishes his old friend off privately. The body he leaves behind becomes one of the most consequential mistakes in the series.
Meeting Yuji
Gojo meets Yuji in Sendai right after Yuji swallows Sukuna's finger. He tests him by letting Sukuna take over for ten seconds, and is impressed when Yuji takes his body back. He then talks the higher-ups into postponing Yuji's execution until Yuji has eaten all the fingers. When the higher-ups engineer Yuji's death on an early mission, Gojo hides the revived Yuji and trains him personally. During that time he shows Yuji what a special grade looks like by toying with Jogo.
The Goodwill Event
When curses and curse users attack the Kyoto exchange event, Gojo fires a Hollow Purple that only just misses Hanami as the curses retreat. It's a reminder of how little the curses can afford a straight fight with him.
The Shibuya Incident
On Halloween, Kenjaku's alliance springs a trap built around Gojo's one weakness: other people. They seal off Shibuya with ordinary people inside, then send special grade curses at him in a crowded subway station. Gojo uses the 0.2-second domain and kills about a thousand transfigured humans in under five minutes without hurting the civilians. Then the man wearing Suguru Geto's face appears, and Gojo's mind fills with memories for one crucial moment. The Prison Realm needs one minute of mental time to seal its target, and it closes.
The sealing of Gojo is the hinge of the whole story. Within days jujutsu society falls apart, the higher-ups strip him of his status, and Kenjaku launches the Culling Game.
Release and the Shinjuku showdown
Gojo is finally freed from the Prison Realm and agrees to fight Sukuna, who is now in Megumi's body, in a deserted Shinjuku on Christmas Eve. Before the fight, asked whether he would lose to Sukuna at full power, he gives the answer fans have quoted ever since:
"Nah, I'd win."
The battle runs for over a dozen chapters: repeated domain clashes, Gojo using reverse cursed technique to repair his burnt-out brain mid-fight, and a Hollow Purple pushed far past its normal limit. For a while it looks like he's won. But Sukuna has been using Mahoraga to adapt to Infinity, and in chapter 236 he cuts through space itself and kills Gojo. In an in-between place that looks like an airport departure lounge, he talks with Geto and Nanami and looks back on what being the strongest meant.
His death isn't the end of his part in the story. Later, his body is used once more in the fight against Sukuna, in a twist that divided readers. The series' last chapters return to the idea he started with: what he really wanted was a generation that didn't need him.
Relationships
Suguru Geto
Best friend · Enemy
Geto was the only person Gojo ever treated as an equal. Gojo didn't see Geto's breakdown coming, and that failure shapes everything he does afterwards, including his choice to teach rather than simply rule by force. Kenjaku wearing Geto's body is the one trick that could ever have worked on him.
Megumi Fushiguro
Ward · Student
Gojo has looked after Megumi and his stepsister since he stopped Toji's son from being handed to the Zenin. He thinks Megumi holds himself back. Megumi finds Gojo exhausting and owes him everything.
Yuji Itadori
Student
Gojo fights the system to keep Yuji alive and trains him in secret. To Gojo, Yuji is proof that the jujutsu world could produce a better kind of sorcerer. Read Yuji's profile.
Yuta Okkotsu
Former student
Yuta is another student Gojo saved from execution, and the one he names as a possible equal. Yuta trusts him completely, and that trust has heavy consequences late in the story.
Shoko Ieiri
Classmate
Shoko is the last person left from his school days. She's dry, unimpressed, and one of the few people who sees him clearly.
Kento Nanami
Junior · Colleague
Nanami finds Gojo insufferable, says so, and trusts him anyway. Gojo, in turn, trusts Nanami with Yuji, which is about the highest compliment he gives.
Ryomen Sukuna
Rival
The strongest of the modern era against the strongest of all time. Each recognises the other as the only real challenge left. Their fight is less hatred than two isolated people finally finding an opponent. Our iconic rivalries guide looks at why it hit so hard.
Toji Fushiguro
The man who nearly killed him
Toji is the only person to beat Gojo before Sukuna, and the reason Gojo became what he is. Gojo's kindness to Toji's son is an odd, quiet answer to that.
He also has a running feud with Utahime Iori, who can't stand him, and a long, cold war with the jujutsu higher-ups, whom he considers corrupt and cowardly.
Trivia
- Sweet tooth. Gojo loves sweets. In the first chapters he's picking up kikufuku, a Sendai speciality, as souvenirs while on a mission.
- Covered eyes. He switches between a black blindfold, bandages and round dark glasses depending on the situation. Each time he takes them off, it's a signal that things are serious.
- Name. The kanji in "Satoru" (悟) means to realise or become enlightened, which fits the moment he awakens after Toji.
- Height. He's listed at over 190 cm, and the art makes the most of it; he's usually the tallest person in the frame.
- The mentor archetype. Gojo plays with the "overpowered mentor" role found across shonen. Our anime archetypes guide has more, and fans often compare his isolation at the top to One Punch Man's Saitama.
- Popularity. He's one of the most recognisable characters in modern anime, and his death is among the most discussed in recent manga (see our guide to character deaths).
Why Gojo matters to the story
Gojo is the clearest statement of one of Jujutsu Kaisen's main ideas: individual strength can't fix a broken system. He can beat anyone. He can't make jujutsu society decent, can't save his best friend, and can't be everywhere at once. That's why he puts his hope in his students, and why the series spends its final arcs proving that they can stand without him.
He's also a lesson in how to write an overpowered character. Akutami solves the "why doesn't the strongest guy fix everything?" problem by making his absence the engine of the plot, and by making his loneliness as important as his power. If you're interested in how fans compare him with other top-tier fighters, our power scaling guide covers the arguments.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gojo the strongest character in Jujutsu Kaisen?
He is the strongest sorcerer of the modern era, and the story treats him and Sukuna as the only two people on that level. Whether he or a full-power Sukuna is stronger is the question the Shinjuku fight answers. See the spoiler section above for the result.
Why does Gojo wear a blindfold?
The Six Eyes take in an overwhelming amount of information about cursed energy. Covering them with a blindfold, bandages or dark glasses reduces the strain. He doesn't need normal sight to get around, because he can perceive cursed energy in everything around him.
How does Gojo's Infinity work?
Infinity puts an endless series of ever-smaller distances between Gojo and anything approaching him. The object keeps getting closer but never arrives, so it seems to slow to a stop in mid-air. The Six Eyes make it so efficient that he can leave it running almost constantly. Only techniques that cancel or bypass it, like the Inverted Spear of Heaven or a domain's sure-hit effect, get through.
What does Gojo's Hollow Purple do?
Hollow Purple fuses Blue (attraction) and Red (repulsion) into an imaginary mass that erases whatever it passes through. It's Gojo's most destructive attack and a secret technique of the Gojo clan. He first uses it against Toji Fushiguro.
Why didn't Gojo get rid of Geto's body?
The story never fully spells it out. Geto's body was not properly disposed of after his death in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, and that gave Kenjaku the chance to take it over. Most readers see grief behind the lapse: it's the one thing in Gojo's life he couldn't treat as just another job.
Does Gojo die in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Yes, in the manga. He's killed by Sukuna during their fight in Shinjuku in chapter 236. The details are in the spoiler-marked section above.
Who voices Satoru Gojo?
Yuichi Nakamura voices him in Japanese, and Kaiji Tang voices him in the English dub.
