Nezuko Kamado is the reason Demon Slayer's hero picks up a sword. On the night Muzan Kibutsuji slaughters the Kamado family, she is the only one left alive, and she has been turned into a demon. Her older brother Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps to find a way to change her back. In a world where every demon eventually eats people, she's the one who never does.
She speaks hardly a word for most of the story, sleeps through whole arcs and spends her days folded up in a wooden box on Tanjiro's back. She's also one of the series' strongest fighters, its emotional centre and the key to defeating Muzan. This profile covers her demon powers, her story arc by arc and the people around her. For the rest of the cast, see our full Demon Slayer character guide.
Who is Nezuko Kamado?
Nezuko is the eldest daughter of a charcoal-selling family living in the mountains in the Taisho era. Before the attack she is a capable, kind older sister who helps her widowed mother with the younger children and thinks of others first. Tanjiro is away in town the night Muzan comes. When he returns, his mother and four younger siblings are dead and Nezuko has turned.
From there she becomes something the Corps has never seen: a demon who protects humans. The rule in Demon Slayer is that demons are killed on sight. The fact that Nezuko is tolerated at all, and later protected, is one of the longest threads in the story. Every Hashira who meets her has to decide whether to believe it.
- The only Kamado sibling besides Tanjiro to survive Muzan's attack.
- Travels in a wooden box during the day to stay out of the sunlight.
- Recovers by sleeping instead of eating, which no other demon in the series does.
- Becomes the first demon to overcome sunlight, which makes her Muzan's top target.
Personality
Even as a demon, Nezuko is still recognisably herself. She is gentle with children and protective of anyone weaker than her. She treats the humans around her as family, patting heads, hugging and fussing over them, and she becomes fiercely angry when they're hurt. In a fight she is fearless to the point of recklessness.
Because she rarely speaks, her personality comes through in small actions: shaking her head at a demon who offers her a way out, crying when she sees her brother hurt, refusing to bite when she's offered blood. The anime gives her a lot of small expressions, too, which is part of why she became such a fan favourite.
Before she was turned, the series shows her as practical and selfless. One flashback has her telling her mother she doesn't need new clothes, so the money can go to the younger children. That quiet sense of putting others first never goes away.
Why the bamboo muzzle?
Nezuko wears a short piece of bamboo held by a cord across her mouth. It's there to stop her from biting anyone while she learns to live with a demon's hunger. Over time it becomes as much a part of her as her pink kimono. She keeps it on almost the whole time she's a demon, and the rare moments she's without it usually mean something has changed.
Demon abilities
Nezuko never trains with a sword or learns a Breathing Style. Her strength comes from being a demon, and it grows quickly as the story goes on. She is still much weaker than Muzan's top demons early on, but by the later arcs she can hold her own against an Upper Moon.
| Ability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Strength and kicks | Her main way of fighting. Her kicks are strong enough to take a demon's head off, and she fights mostly with her legs. |
| Regeneration | Like all demons, she heals from wounds that would kill a person. Her healing speeds up a lot as she gets stronger. |
| Size change | She can shrink to fit in Tanjiro's box, or grow taller and more adult-looking when she fights. |
| Exploding Blood | Her Blood Demon Art. Her blood bursts into pink flames that burn demons and things made from demon flesh, but don't harm humans. |
| Recovery through sleep | Instead of eating people, she sleeps deeply to restore her strength, sometimes for days. |
Exploding Blood
Exploding Blood is Nezuko's signature power. The flames only burn what belongs to demons, which makes it unusually useful in support. She uses it to burn poison out of injured allies' bodies, to destroy threads and flesh that belong to demons, and, most famously, to set Tanjiro's sword alight. Her flames mixed with his blade give it extra cutting power against demons, a combination that turns the tide in several fights.
Her awakened form
In the Entertainment District, pushed to her limit against Daki, Nezuko goes into a stronger, wilder form. She grows taller, horn-like features appear, vine-like markings cover her skin and she heals almost instantly. She overpowers Daki, but she also comes close to losing control and attacking a human. Tanjiro brings her back by singing the lullaby their mother used to sing. It's one of the clearest moments showing the danger she carries.
Nezuko's story arc
The night of the attack
Tanjiro finds Nezuko still warm and carries her down the mountain, hoping to find a doctor. She turns on the way and attacks him. But even mid-attack she starts crying, and she pulls back. Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, arrives to kill her. When she shields her unconscious brother instead of eating him, Giyu spares them both and sends them to his old teacher, Sakonji Urokodaki.
Two years of sleep
While Tanjiro trains with Urokodaki for the Final Selection, Nezuko sleeps for about two years. During that time Urokodaki uses a suggestion on her: humans are her family, demons are her enemies. She wakes up just as Tanjiro returns from the exam, and from then on she travels with him in a box built for the purpose.
First fights
Nezuko fights alongside Tanjiro from his earliest missions. Against the Temari and Arrow demons in Asakusa she takes heavy blows and kicks the temari back. In the Natagumo Mountain arc, the spider demon Rui tries to take her as a "sister." This is the first time she awakens her Blood Demon Art. Her flames set Tanjiro's sword ablaze just as he finds the Hinokami Kagura, and together they come close to cutting Rui's head off.
The Hashira trial
After Natagumo, Tanjiro and Nezuko are brought before the Hashira. Most of them want her killed. Sanemi Shinazugawa cuts his own arm and stabs her box to prove that she'll attack when tempted with blood. She doesn't. Urokodaki and Giyu have also written to say they would take their own lives if she ever harms a human. Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the head of the Corps, accepts her.
Mugen Train and the Entertainment District
On the Mugen Train she defends sleeping passengers and helps free Tanjiro from Enmu's dream. In the Entertainment District she takes on Daki on her own, goes into her awakened form and then plays a big part in the fight against both Upper Six demons. Her flames burn the poison out of Inosuke and Tengen Uzui at the end.
Conquering the sun
At dawn at the end of the Swordsmith Village arc, Tanjiro has to choose between dragging Nezuko into the shade and stopping Hantengu, an Upper Moon, from killing the villagers. Nezuko makes the choice for him. She kicks him toward the demon and stays in the sunlight. Instead of burning away, she survives. She has conquered the sun, and she speaks for the first time, greeting him with a simple good morning.
This makes her the most important demon in the story. Muzan has spent a thousand years trying to overcome sunlight. Now he wants to absorb Nezuko to gain the same immunity, and he turns his full attention to finding her.
Becoming human again
During the Hashira Training arc and the final battle, Nezuko is kept hidden away, with Urokodaki watching over her. Tamayo, a demon doctor allied with the Corps, has been working on a cure, and Nezuko's blood has been part of that research. The medicine works. While the Corps fights Muzan, Nezuko changes back into a human in great pain, her memories return, and she runs to find her brother.
At the end of the battle, Muzan, as he dies, pours his blood into the badly wounded Tanjiro and turns him into a demon. Nezuko reaches him first. Tanjiro injures her in his confusion, but she holds onto him and refuses to let go. Together with his friends and Tamayo's medicine, she helps bring him back to himself.
The epilogue shows Nezuko, Tanjiro and their surviving friends living in peace. The final chapter jumps to the present day and introduces descendants of the main cast, including those of Nezuko and Zenitsu, who married.
Relationships
Tanjiro Kamado
Older brother
Everything in their story begins with Tanjiro's promise to turn her back. He carries her, protects her and trusts her completely, and she does the same for him. Their bond is the series' heart. Read Tanjiro's profile.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
Friend · Future husband
Zenitsu falls for Nezuko the moment he sees her and spends much of the series protecting her and being embarrassing about it. She grows fond of him, and the epilogue shows that they married.
Inosuke Hashibira
Friend
Inosuke can't quite work out how to act around her, and she treats him with the same patience she gives everyone. He learns some of his gentleness from the Kamado siblings.
Giyu Tomioka
The Hashira who spared her
Giyu breaks the Corps' rules on the first night by letting her live. He later stakes his own life on her not harming anyone.

Sanemi tries hardest to prove she's a monster, and fails. His test is what convinces several of the other Hashira.
Muzan Kibutsuji
The demon who turned her
Muzan kills her family and turns her, then later hunts her for the immunity to sunlight he has wanted for a thousand years.
Trivia
- Hair. Her long black hair fades to orange at the tips, and her eyes are pink. The colours mark her out from the rest of her family.
- Kimono. Her pink kimono uses a hemp-leaf pattern, a traditional design associated with healthy growth in children.
- A sleepy demon. Her long sleeps between fights are a running joke in the fandom, and also a real plot point: they're how she gets strong without eating.
- Mascot appeal. Nezuko is one of the most recognisable anime characters of recent years, and her design appears on a huge range of merchandise.
- A rare quiet lead. She is a central character who barely speaks, which makes her an unusual entry in our guide to female protagonists.
- Birthday. Her birthday, December 28, is listed in our character birthdays calendar.
Why Nezuko matters to the story
Nezuko is Demon Slayer's argument made into a character. The series is about grief, loss and whether monsters can still be people. She's the proof, from the first chapter, that a demon can keep their humanity. That's why Tanjiro shows mercy to dying demons, and why the Corps has to rethink its rules.
She's also a lesson in how much a character can carry without dialogue. Her choices do the talking: refusing blood, kicking her brother into a fight while the sun rises, holding onto him at the end. The bond between the two siblings is among the best examples of the family-first stories in anime. If you're coming from Jujutsu Kaisen, compare her with how Yuji lives with Sukuna: two heroes sharing their lives with something monstrous, handled in very different ways.
Frequently asked questions
How old is Nezuko?
Nezuko is 12 when Muzan attacks her family. She spends about two years asleep while Tanjiro trains, so she is 14 for most of the series. Her birthday is December 28.
Why does Nezuko have bamboo in her mouth?
The bamboo is a muzzle. It stops her from biting anyone while she is a newly turned demon fighting her hunger. It also became a habit and a kind of comfort, and it's the most recognisable part of her design.
Why doesn't Nezuko eat humans?
She resists the hunger from the very first night, when she nearly attacks Tanjiro and cries instead. Rather than eating people, she recovers her strength by sleeping, which no other demon is shown doing. During her long sleep Urokodaki also uses a suggestion to tell her that humans are her family and demons are the enemy.
Can Nezuko talk?
Barely, for most of the story. As a demon she communicates with sounds, nods and gestures. She speaks her first clear words after she conquers the sun at the end of the Swordsmith Village arc, and she talks more as her mind recovers. Once she's human again she speaks normally.
Does Nezuko become human again?
Yes. A medicine developed from Tamayo's research, using Nezuko's own blood as a key, turns her back into a human during the final battle. She regains her memories and goes on to live a full human life.
Who does Nezuko marry?
The manga's epilogue shows that Nezuko and Zenitsu married. Their descendants appear in the modern-day final chapter.
Who voices Nezuko?
Akari Kito voices Nezuko in Japanese, and Abby Trott voices her in the English dub.
