Tanjiro Kamado is the eldest son of a poor family of charcoal sellers living on a mountain in Taisho-era Japan. One winter morning he comes home from town to find his mother and four of his siblings killed by a demon, and his younger sister Nezuko turned into one. Everything he does afterwards, from joining the Demon Slayer Corps to facing the oldest demon alive, comes back to one promise: to make Nezuko human again.
What has made Tanjiro so popular is not his power but his kindness. Most action heroes run on anger. Tanjiro runs on empathy, even for the creatures he has to kill. He's polite to a fault, very stubborn, has a famously hard head and is honest to the point of being a terrible liar. He grows enormously strong, but the story keeps judging him by whether he stays gentle.

Personality
Tanjiro is the reliable older brother taken to an extreme. He grew up looking after five younger siblings after his father's death, and that habit of putting other people first never switches off. He apologises to people who hurt him, thanks people who are rude to him, and will patiently explain to the brash Inosuke why he shouldn't headbutt strangers (while being the biggest headbutter in the series himself).
He is also extremely determined, and the story shows that as both a strength and a weakness. He talks himself through pain with pep talks, forces himself to keep fighting with broken bones, and can't stand the idea of letting someone else take a hit for him. His sense of justice is fierce: the one thing that makes him truly angry is someone mocking the dead or treating people as disposable, which is why he loses his temper with Muzan, the Hashira and the Upper Moons alike.
His defining trait is mercy. Tanjiro can smell sadness on demons, and he often sees glimpses of the people they used to be as they die. He kills them, because they'll kill others if he doesn't, but he refuses to hate them. Several demons receive a kindness from him in their final moments that they never got in life.

Tanjiro is not a prodigy. Most of his strength comes from hard training and a knack for learning in the middle of a fight, plus a few gifts he was born with.

Tanjiro's nose can track a demon through a city, tell lies from truth and read people's emotions. In combat it lets him sense an opening, which he sees as a "thread" connecting his blade to the enemy's weak point.

The breathing technique all slayers use to push their bodies past human limits. At the Butterfly Mansion, Tanjiro learns to keep it up constantly, even while sleeping, which makes him much stronger.

A flame-shaped mark that spreads from his old forehead scar, first appearing in the Entertainment District fight. Marks boost strength and speed dramatically, but the story warns that people who awaken one are not expected to live past 25.

A state of perception in which he can see through an opponent's skin to the muscles and blood flow underneath, and predict their movements. He reaches it fully in his rematch against Akaza.

Breathing styles
Water Breathing
Urokodaki teaches Tanjiro Water Breathing, a flexible, adaptable style built around flowing movements. Tanjiro learns all ten of its standard forms, from the simple Water Surface Slash to the long, building Constant Flux, which takes the shape of a water dragon in the anime. He's good at it, but he's frank that his body isn't quite suited to it. Dead Calm, the eleventh form, belongs to Giyu alone; Tanjiro has never used it.
Some of the forms Tanjiro relies on most:
- First Form: Water Surface Slash — a single, focused horizontal cut.
- Second Form: Water Wheel — a full vertical spin, the move he uses to escape Rui's threads.
- Fifth Form: Blessed Rain After the Drought — a gentle, painless beheading, used for demons that stop fighting.
- Tenth Form: Constant Flux — a chain of strikes that gets stronger with each rotation.
Hinokami Kagura (Sun Breathing)
Every New Year, Tanjiro's father Tanjuro danced the Hinokami Kagura to the fire god from sunset to dawn, and passed the dance and its breathing to his son. On Mount Natagumo, close to death, Tanjiro remembers it and switches styles mid-fight. It turns out that the dance preserves the movements of Sun Breathing, the original style created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni centuries earlier, from which all others derive.
The dance has twelve forms, among them Dance, Clear Blue Sky, Raging Sun, Fake Rainbow, Fire Wheel, Burning Bones Summer Sun, Setting Sun Transformation, Solar Heat Haze, Sunflower Thrust, Dragon Sun Halo Head Dance, Beneficent Radiance and Flame Dance. At first it exhausts him after a single move. Learning to use it without collapsing, and to mix it with Water Breathing, is a big part of his growth. In the final battle, he learns that linking all twelve forms into an endless cycle is the real secret: the thirteenth form.
Story arc
- The massacre Tanjiro's family is killed while he is away overnight in town. Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka nearly kills the demon Nezuko, but spares her after she protects her brother, and sends them to Urokodaki.
- Training Two years of training on Mount Sagiri. With help from the spirits of Sabito and Makomo, Tanjiro cuts through a boulder and earns his place in the Final Selection.
- Final Selection He survives seven days on Mount Fujikasane and kills the Hand Demon that murdered Urokodaki's earlier students.
- First missions He fights the Swamp Demon, meets Muzan in Asakusa, befriends the demon doctor Tamayo, and picks up Zenitsu and Inosuke at Kyogai's drum house.
- Mount Natagumo Facing Lower Five Rui, he discovers the Hinokami Kagura. Afterwards, the Hashira put him on trial for travelling with a demon.
- Mugen Train With Kyojuro Rengoku he protects a train of 200 passengers from Enmu, then watches Rengoku die holding off Upper Three Akaza. It's the loss that shapes the rest of his journey.
- Entertainment District Alongside Tengen Uzui, the trio defeats Upper Six, Daki and Gyutaro. His Mark appears for the first time.
- Swordsmith Village He trains with the Yoriichi Type Zero puppet and fights Upper Four Hantengu with Genya and Nezuko. Nezuko conquers the sun.
- Hashira Training He rotates through training camps run by the Hashira and helps convince Giyu to take part.
- Infinity Castle Tanjiro and Giyu fight and defeat Akaza, avenging Rengoku.
- The final battle Tanjiro fights Muzan until dawn, badly wounded, with almost every surviving slayer helping to hold him in the sunlight. Muzan's dying act turns Tanjiro into a demon, and he's restored to humanity with the medicine Kanao injects and the voices of the people who love him.
The final chapter jumps to the present day, where Tanjiro's descendants and the reincarnations or descendants of the rest of the cast live ordinary, peaceful lives.

Nezuko Kamado
Younger sister
His reason for everything. Tanjiro never once treats Nezuko as a monster, and she repays that trust by protecting humans, even other slayers who want her dead. Their bond is what convinces Kagaya and, eventually, the Hashira.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
Friend
Tanjiro is the first person to tell Zenitsu he's strong without sarcasm. He ignores Zenitsu's whining, trusts him completely with Nezuko and is proven right every time.
Inosuke Hashibira
Friend and self-declared rival
Inosuke starts by attacking Tanjiro and ends up treating him as family. Tanjiro's constant, unbothered kindness is what slowly teaches him how to be one.
Giyu Tomioka
Saviour and senior
Giyu staked his life on Nezuko, and Tanjiro never forgets it. Later, it's Tanjiro who helps the guilt-ridden Hashira see that he deserves his place, and they end up fighting Akaza together.
Sakonji Urokodaki

Gruff, masked and deeply affectionate. Urokodaki also staked his own life on Nezuko's good behaviour, and is the closest thing to a grandfather Tanjiro has left.

They spend barely a night together, but Rengoku's insistence that the strong must protect the weak, and his trust in the next generation, become Tanjiro's code.

Tanjiro flips Kanao's decision coin and tells her to follow her heart, the first push that helps her make her own choices. Their bond grows quietly in the background and pays off in the finale.

Muzan sees Tanjiro's earrings and recognises the man he fears most. Tanjiro's anger at Muzan is the only hatred he allows himself, because Muzan treats every life, demon or human, as worthless.

- The first kanji of his name, 炭, means "charcoal," a nod to his family's trade; "kamado" is a traditional cooking stove.
- He got his forehead scar shielding a younger sibling from a falling brazier, before the story began. Final Selection injuries made it darker, and later it turns into his Mark.
- His hanafuda earrings were a gift from Yoriichi to his ancestor and are one of the first things that make Muzan react.
- His sword turns black when he first draws it. Black blades are rare and considered a bad omen, because nobody knows which Breathing Style suits their wielder.
- He's famously bad at lying. His face contorts so badly whenever he tries that it's become one of the series' best-known gags.
Why Tanjiro works as a hero
Tanjiro is often compared with Yuji Itadori and Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia, the other good-hearted leads of his generation of Shonen Jump. What sets him apart is that his kindness isn't a flaw the story beats out of him. The Hashira mock it, Muzan finds it baffling, and it's the reason Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Kanao and Giyu end up stronger. How old is Tanjiro Kamado?
Tanjiro is 13 when his family is killed. He trains for about two years under Urokodaki, so he is 15 when he passes the Final Selection and for most of the series. His birthday is July 14.
Is Tanjiro related to Yoriichi Tsugikuni?
No. Tanjiro is not Yoriichi's descendant. His ancestor Sumiyoshi was a friend of Yoriichi's who watched him perform Sun Breathing, and the Kamado family preserved those movements as the Hinokami Kagura dance. Yoriichi also gave Sumiyoshi's family the hanafuda earrings Tanjiro wears.
Does Tanjiro become a Hashira?
No. Tanjiro reaches Hashira-level strength by the final battle, but he never holds the title. The Corps is disbanded after Muzan is defeated.
Does Tanjiro turn into a demon?
Yes, briefly, at the very end of the manga. Muzan pours his blood and will into Tanjiro as he dies. Tanjiro is saved by the human-restoring medicine, delivered by Kanao, and the support of his friends and family pulling him back.
Who does Tanjiro end up with?
